I really miss the way WWE used to build up characters through vignettes. All it took was 3 minutes or so but it was a chance to make characters more recognizable to the crowds. Rather than todays product where most characters seem generic. I figured Id make a thread to salute the good ol days of character development. Here's two of my favorites.

The problem here is that there is a noticeable absence of true characters in pro wrestling. These days it seems as if every new guy fits a generic mold: standard build, standard boots, standard trunks, neutered rock entrance music. There is not much that sets them apart from the rest of the roster.
If you want a good example of effective vignettes look at the ones created for the original Mankind character. They were dark and uneasy; perfectly mimicking the strange figure Mick Foley was portraying.

I loved the ore debut vignette of Goldust. He first quotes Night of the Living dead and then goes into talking about Taker.

Mankinds was great!!! Everyone of the original ones was awesome. I am watching some now and think they are funny as heel. Repo man "this lady is 3 days late on her payment, thats no lady thats a car theif" "Lady screams,Make your payments or shut up" Funny stuff!
My fav Mankind lines same vignette "The time has come to relieve that pain...which will be better for me but not so enjoyable for all of you" "Leave the light on....I'm coming home"

While I understand what is being said here, and can agree to an extent, there just isn't a place for the over the top characters of the 80's and 90's in today's society. People would laugh them out of the building.

ah yes the classic vignettes........
mankiinds were awesome-when he attcked the Undertaker a series of times after WM12 I was pumped for their feud.
these vignettes AND UTs selling of Mankinds attacks really put him over the top.

People loved the ones for Carlito and if you go back to the ones for Razor Ramon they are the same thing with different wrestlers. But one of Razors first vignettes he was at one of the street markets picks up what I think is a plum but others have said it was an apple takes a bite spits it in the market workers face and then again at the camera. Carlito did the same thing and people loved it.

Akeem was definitely over the top, perfect for that era, horrible if done today. Think of the current technology we have today though, you would not get something like that today.

Yeap and it worked out well for him Sin Cara also got them as well as Awesome Kong The Brodus Clay ones are pretty good aswell i agree , the new ones they are doing are pretty good.. if nothing else .. they are at least putting the guys face and name out there.. so when they do show up in a match people at least know who it is... i liked del rios.. but i think they went on for far too long... it got to a point where all i wanted was for his ass to show up so they would stop!

Regards to generic wrestlers, it's reflective of entertainment in general. Look at music, movies, athletes (especially baseball, where now, everybody looks like they just came out of the military vs the ol school guys with mustaches, chewing tobacco and that feel that they would just raise hell on the road).
But wrestling in particular, it seems the training process and schooling (everybody learns the exact same spots, is expected to do top rope spots and bumps, etc regardless of how big you are), and is expected to wear flashy Chris Jericho type tights or boxer tights. Nothing wrong with the ol school briefs!
