Results -------------- Kama Mustafa, D-Lo Brown, & Rocky Maivia beat The Legion of Doom (12:20) in a "handicap" match when Maivia pinned Hawk. Max Mini & Nova beat Tarantula & Mosaic (6:43) when Max pinned Tarantula. Henry & Phineas Godwinn beat The Headbangers (12:!7) to win the WWF Tag Team Title when Phineas pinned Mosh. Legends Ceremony: Jack Brisco, Dory Funk Jr., Terry Funk, Gene Kiniski, Sam Muchnick, Harley Race, & Lou Thesz. Owen Hart pinned Farooq (7:12) to win the vacant I-C Title. Crush, Skull, Eight Ball, & Chainz beat Savio Vega, Miguel Perez, Jesus Castillo, & Jose Estrada (9:11) when Crush pinned Castillo. Bret Hart & Davey Smith beat Vader & The Patriot (23:13) when Hart pinned Patriot. Shawn Michaels pinned The Undertaker (29:59) in a "hell in a cell" match. ------------- Personally, I'm enamered by this PPV, ever since I first saw that poster I needed to see it (I was just a few months into watching and I was only 7, and didn't end up seeing the HIAC till the Tombstone DVD came out). This is a weird PPV, everyone knows of the HIAC, but really, where was the World Title, during this whole period of SummerSlam till Survivor Series, the WWF Title was a second thought, backseated to Michaels and the rising Triple H, and thier fued with Undertaker. Of course most, if not all of us know that this was the first HIAC match ever, and in many minds (mines included) its the best. Infact, I would put it up with Austin/Bret from WM13 as being one of the most perfect matches ever. We also got the debut of Kane at this event, interupting the HIAC and causing HBK to win which lead to the Kane/Taker fued and releaved Michaels to go and fued with Bret. Anyway, discuss, what do you, what did you not like? Also, for fun, since we've had a few of these 'What if..' threads recently (which I love btw), what do you think would have happened if Pillman had never died. Sure its minor, but still, if he hadn't, maybe Goldust would have been a bigger deal going into 98, maybe Pillman would have done bigger things?

Not seeing the PPV as a whole (always wanted to though) I can only be so judgemental. I think that the HBK/Taker HIAC is probably the best as well. Everything was just set up so perfect and Michaels was in his prime. They set the bar so high for HIAC's following in their footsteps.
As far as Pillman, had he still been alive I think that he would have been a pretty big deal. Only because I remember Bruce Pritchard talking in the "Loose Cannon" DVD about how big of a deal it was to actually sign Pillman in the first place. It seemed like they had to have big plans for this guy. I mean they signed him when he was still injured if I remember correctly. But I think the fact he had that reoccuring injury held him back slightly. The one thing I think everyone can agree on about Pillman was that he would go into that ring and put on a performance regardless of the situation. He always wanted to please the fans.

Good topic, good PPV. I do have some gripes and some loves about this PPV.
Loves:
The Hell In A Cell match is probably my favorite match of all time. It was flawless.
The flag match between Bulldog/Bret and Vader/Patriot was fun.
Gripes:
The "mini" matches never got over. They should have just pushed the light heavyweight division more instead.
Booking Owen vs. Faarooq in the IC title tournament finals was a mistake as it was heel vs. heel and the match was terrible.
Now, Bret Hart was WWF Champion at this PPV and I think the reason it took a backseat to Hell in a Cell was because Bret was still feuding with The Patriot at this time. They had a title match at Ground Zero which I've honestly never seen because I'm not a big Patriot fan. I think they made the right choice of putting Taker/HBK on last because I don't think they could justify putting The Patriot in the main event of a PPV that also had Taker/HBK in a cell match never seen before.

If Bad Blood would have been in Canada then having Owen vs. Faarooq in the finals would have made sense. I always wondered why it was Faarooq and Owen too. Maybe the initial idea was for Austin to go in and stun both men but wasn't cleared yet to do anything physical until Survivor Series?? Or maybe there was meant to be a Hart Foundation vs. Nation feud that never caught on.
I felt this ppv is very underrated. It had a lot of good solid matches on it. Yes, the ppv was based around HBK vs. Taker in the Cell match, but as someone said, the flag match was a fun tag match, I think seeing Bret defend the title against Vader and having him beat him would make Bret have more momentum going into Survivor Series. They could have easily had Davey vs. Patriot in a flag match.

Agree with you jammer311. Austin did make an appearance in that match as he was doing commentary and then hit Faarooq over the head with the Intercontinental Title thus giving Owen the victory. This would lead to their Survivor Series re-match from SummerSlam. However, they just as easily could have had Austin screw a face over to give Owen the title but I dunno...maybe they were doing it to protect Austin. Weird booking either way...
Vader vs. Bret never happened on PPV and it's a darn shame. They did some good work together and I think they both shined in the Final Four match in February, 1997 when they did a superplex spot. The Patriot never really gelled with me. Maybe I just felt it was way too EASY to bring in "THE PATRIOT" during the whole USA vs. Canada stuff. Here's a guy we've never seen before suddenly wrestling at Ground Zero for the WWF Title...
Regardless, Badd Blood was still fun and I actually wish they still had a PPV named Badd Blood. It's fun to say...
P.S. I LOVE THE CLASSICS BOARD!!!

An all around good PPV IMO. HBK-Taker, while not my favorite HIAC, is definalty one of the best ones, and the Hart-Patriot feud wasn't bad either. Alot of people didn't like the Patriot, but I didn't mind him much. Sure, he was thrown in the title picture to give Bret somebody to feud w/ until HBK or Austin were ready for him later on, but the feud wasn't bad. Its a shame the Patriot got hurt soon after this and retired. I thought that he could have had a decent mid-card career, w/ possibly an IC or European title reign.

I dont think the World Title had a backseat really. Honestly it was probably defended more during this time then any other as it seeme every week Bret was facing another American on Raw. I can kinda understand Bret being on the undercard for the event though cause HIAC was a big deal. Outside of the Flag match and HITC though, i wasnt a big fan of the event.

Wow, didn't know that was the Badd Blood theme. They gave it to Steve Blackman after.
I was obsessed with the HBK/Taker feud from about 1997-2001 and watched the cell match more times than I can recall. I think it gets overlooked a lot as one of the best matches either of these guys have ever had.

Personally a very solid ppv. I loved the HIAC match. Kane making his debut was insane I was 10 and Taker was my fav. And then to see Kane come in and take the Undertaker out was crazy for me. Ever since I have been a fan of both Undertaker and Kane.
Flag match was good as well for some reason I kept wanting them to turn the Patriot heel and join the Hart Foundation. Not sure why just thought it would work.
I am a fan of midget wrestling but for some reason in the late 90's the WWF midget wrestling was not good at all. Though I thought the Mini Goldust,Mankind and Vader were funny.
I think Owen should have faced Ken Shamrock. That would have been good for the time being since Ken was getting over as a face. The other option would have been Dude Love but the bracket would have needed to be changed to Dude Love vs Rocky Maivia and then Faarooq.
I liked the idea of Los Boricuas and the DOA but the matches seemed very boring to me.
I loved the Godwinns/Headbangers feud. Do not matter what match I loved it. Country vs Metal/Punk, Hillbillys vs Punkers I just loved it.
NOD vs LOD the only match I liked with them was WM 13. Did not care for any others they had.
Again overall very solid ppv.

I always enjoyed the mini matches but the Boricaus v. DOA became tired very quickly and yet they kept up the fued matches for three PPVs, Summerslam, Badd Blood, In Your House DX and Boricaus beat down Skull at the Royal Rumble. They had cool music though, the Boricaus. For two matches put on the show last minute they were fine. Maybe they had the matches planned though as I know WCW usually had special bonus matches.

Unbelievable that PPV is 14 years old. Wow, I remember ordering it as a Junior in High School. That PPV might have been one of the most fun PPV's (other than the sad news that Brian Pillman was found dead) WWF ran. The Hell in a Cell was such a classic important match, especially with Kane debuting at the end. You kinda felt something was going to happen during the main event, you just didn't know what.
