I had some personal problems going on in 2001 so I didn't get to watch wrestling much until after WCW died. But I recently watched Sin for the first time and was wondering why did they bring in Animal as the mystery man and what happened following Sin with all of it?

not a thing.
he became part of Flairs Magnificent 7.now if you listen to Animals shoot he says they had big plans so Hawk to be resigned and they along with Sting would bring the Steiners reign of terror to an end.
as much as I adore The Road Warriors I find Animal to be an embelisher to say the least

I agree. Although the matches were still pretty good, I really enjoyed a few of the matches off of Sin.

i'll agree with that...sadly,at the end, they kinda gave me the vibe of they were TRYING to make something of it,if for no other reason than to try and impress their soon-to-be new owners at Fusient, only to see it fall apart and Vince gut the company...
