Watching a lot of Nitros and Saturday Nights recently....What was with WCW always feeding monsters to Lex Luger? So far Ive seen him defeat...
-Kevin Nash -The Giant -Road Block -Tombstone (911 from ECW) -Wrath -Big Ron Studd -Loch Ness -One Man Gang -Barbarian (Super Assassins) -Warlord (Super Assassins) -Kamala -Earthquake/Shark
Seriously, what was his contract? 5 years $5.5 million dollars, 1 world title run and a feud with anyone over 350lbs?

Obviously it worked for Luger being fed monsters, it got him over even more by racking the likes of monsters like Nash, the Giant, and 911. Fans went nuts for him, I did too.

yeah Luger and his lariats could take down any monster.
he was a good guy for these types because of the intensity he was capable of showing(when he felt like it)

My take is that Luger didn't always work well with smaller wrestlers. His WWF title push was halted because of performance ambivalence. I also remember him getting blown up in a couple of really long matches. WCW ( or maybe Luger had the creative pull) may have decided that his best dramatic formula was "handsome Greek god type overcomes monster".

There was a Clash of Champs from around '89 or '90 where the bell rang, Luger sprinted across the ring, nailed Sid with a lariat, and 1-2-3. It was pretty shocking at the time.

I always remember being so excited for Summerslam 93 and marking out like mad when Luger nailed Yoko with one hell of a running clothsline and dropped him. Luger was very believable against the(at the time)unstoppable Yoko

If anyone wants to see a GREAT Luger vs. Monster match, check out Luger vs. Dan Spivey from WrestleWar '91. It hovers around the ***1/2-**** rating and had no right to be as great as it was.

I think they fed him the monsters because it did wonders for his character. Had he not defeated those guys, he would have just been another bland, overly muscular physique in the ring. At least WCW did something good with him. I remember I use to be a huge Luger mark back in the day.
Speaking of his world title run, I assume Hogan had something to do with him dropping the belt on Nitro and regaining it at Road Wild? Terrible decision. With Sting out and Luger winning the belt it felt like WCW was gaining momentum and they had someone "besides" Sting that could carry the torch while he was gone.

Yea I wasnt so much against him beating all these guys, i just noticed all his matches had 1 thing in common. Its funny though cause he ran through all these monsters but then would get into actual feuds with someone like Arn Anderson or Buff Bagwell LOL

Like others have said, it suited Luger's character better and he probably could put on better matches w/ them than the smaller guys. I had no problem w/ it at the time because w/ Sting out and the 4 Horsemen being treated like crap by the nWo weekly, Luger was really the only believable guy WCW had at the time who could go toe to toe w/ Hogan and the nWo.

WCW had a guy named Big Ron Studd??? Wow, I didn't watch much Nitro after they expanded the NWO to 3/4 of the roster. I liked Luger, was suprised he never beat Yoko for the belt (summerslam 93).

Two reasons for never defeating Yoko for the belt... 1) He got drunk and said that he was schedualed to win the title. Vince couldn't have this. 2) Bret Hart was over way more than Luger ever was.

Luger is underrated he could work with smaller guys too, watch his matches with Steamboat and Pillman from the late 80s they were great matches personally I like Luger series of matches against Steamboat way better than the series of matches Luger had with Flair

Yup, I believe it was either the last or only guy that John Studd trained...or the guy was friends or something, there was some sort of connection. He also wrestled as The Yeti and Ravens Flock member Reese

Yeah, I know he was going to win it a WM 10, but it was changed last minute, and I liked the Bret win much more. I just thought he would win it at Summerslam considering Yoko having the belt wasn't the original plan anyway for the event. Also was there actual Superstars tapings of Luger with the World title prior to WM10. I thought I read it before, long time ago.

I always remember Luger belting Yoko and(in later years) the Giant with several huge clothlines......it looked damn effective.
I remember watching Summerslam 03 and being REALLY behind LUger.also loved the bodyslam on the deck of the Intrepid.
great TV at the time IMO

I think I was the only person alive that thought Luger was stronger and better then Hogan. I always looked at NWA and WWF and thought "Sting could take Warrior, Savage and Flair would be a push, but Luger would KILL Hulkamania".......Would have been cool to see.

I always liked Luger as a kid, I was 10/11 during his time in WWF. Was suprised when he didn't win the belt from Yoko at Summerslam. Also didn't understand how he could never beat Flair in WCW/NWA before Flair/Luger left for WWE. Baiscally understand why now.
