This is something I think I'm going to do pretty regularly. Simply its just discussing a classic PPV, whether it be the matches that took place, rumors running into the event, what you thought was going to happen, you know, stuff like that. WWF Royal Rumble 1999 'No Chance In Hell'MATCH: The Big Bossman def Road Dogg.. INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH: Ken Shamrock def Billy Gunn to retain.. EUROPEAN TITLE MATCH: X-Pac def Gangrel.. WOMENS TITLE MATCH: Sable def Luna Vachon.. WWF TITLE I QUIT MATCH: The Rock def Mankind ROYAL RUMBLE: Vince McMahon eliminated Steve Austin to win! This was my first PPV (which is why I picked it) and was the first wrestling I had seen, and after watching this 3 hour show I was hooked. This is still in my mind one of the most solid cards they put together for a Rumble. The undercard was stacked, the ME was insane and the Rumble was great also, with a crazy twist that IMO few saw coming.

great idea.
oh man I LOVE RR99.when Austin returns after his Corperate beatdown the pop for him is insane.
I remember being so shocked at fab Vinnie throwing out Austin but man did it fuel their already roasting hot feud.
Rock vs Foley was also great.man those chairshots were unreal.

i remember at the time the wwf couldn't do anything wrong in my opinion.
the drama at the end was unbelievable.
looking back though, for me it was a sign of things to come. while i don't think vince should have been anywhere near the title match at wrestlemania, it was still dissapointing that the stipulation of the RR winner receiving the main event slot at WM
the fact that austin earned the right at the st valentines day massacre kinda killed the thrill of winning the rumble in the first place.

That Rock vs. Mankind match was legendary for the chairshots alone, absolutely brutal. Shocking RR winner too but built on the great Austin/McMahon feud. Love it!

I said about the undercard, the BossMan/Road Dogg match and the Shamrock/Gunn matches were also great, two matches that showed exacly what a midcard level match should be.

Yeah, the rumble and the WWE title match were good, but if memory serves correctly, Bossman/Road Dogg et al were all pretty terrible.

Gotta be honest, I thought this Rumble was pretty crappy.
The Rumble match itself severely lacked star power and was dead for the parts not involving Austin/Vince. They spent so much time on that (which was admittedly great) they didn't bother to sort out the parts not involving them and it suffered because of it.
The undercard was extremely lacklustre and didn't deliver in any kind of way. I didn't enjoy any of the matches. Mankind/Rock was a great brawl, very entertaining but brutal.
Overall, the Rumble match had some good moments and Rock/Mankind was very entertaining. Apart from that, the show....sucked.

At the time, like every other Attitude era fan, I thought this show was incredible. I was pissed off with the ending to the Rumble match though. Nowadays I'm kinda lukewarm to it, but maybe it's because of all the reviews I've read since I last viewed it. I gotta watch it again and see how I feel.

Yeah this PPV fell really flat in my opinion. Outside of Rock/Foley the undercard was pretty bad. The RR was bad outside of Vince/Austin.

This was a HORRIBLE PPV to be at live as a 14 year old mark. Austin/McMahon are out of the ring immediately and go backstage where I can't tell what is going on. The under card stunk and was all heel victories except X-Pac I think. The exception was Rock/Foley being entertaining. However having watched it since seeing it live in person there are a few spots I enjoy, particularly Mark Henry pointing and laughing at Chyna when Austin eliminates her.

I have to say i enjoyed the event, granted the undercard was abit naff , but there was Tori's debut if i am correct, The rumble was good, even included a sacrifice!! Kane eliminating himself sucked. The austin/mcmahon thing was dissapointing tho because for half the match they werent there .. Rock and foley match was awesome though. Also had the first woman in the rumble and a twist in the end, So the event made history! Looking forward to next review

Used to like it, it's only watchable for the mark-out moments in the Rumble match (weak Rumble match) and Rock vs Mankind. I feel Bossman/Road Dogg didn't have to go fifteen minutes, and that they had little chemistry. Oh, and X-Pac and Gangrel was alright aside a few botches (botched three count). The undercard was too DX-orientated I found.

I've been watching a lot of 1999 WWF lately from PPVs I've had on tape/DVD for years to Raws and SmackDowns viewing them online (post-Fully Loaded, so I'll have to go back and watch January to July Raws at some point). The Royal Rumble is where I started a few weeks back, and it's definitely Russo's influence in full swing with the overbooked Rumble match and finish. First and foremost, I love the ad with the BCA Austin and Vince giveaway. Even now, though, the only things that really stand out as good from that event were X-Pac/Gangrel and the "I Quit" match for the WWF title, the latter of which is about as graphic of a match as you'll ever find in WWF/E history (excluding overdone bladejobs like Eddie's at JD04). Not one of my favorite Rumbles by ANY means, but it's the Attitude era and I can be nostalgic for that reason alone despite the mostly-subpar wrestling.

JBl was also clumsy delivering the shot

JBL's recent Twitter postings said nothing other than Eddie making a really long "business blade" for that match so he could get good color. And boy did he ever. But on topic, I wasn't really a fan of RR99. I watched it a few months ago and had a hard time sitting through it. Mankind/The Rock delivered in a massive way, but everything else fell flat to me. Vince winning the Rumble sucked huge, storyline or not. But having Austin winning it 3 years in a row, and again in 2001 may have been overkill. But to each his own.
