Who do you feel are the greatest wrestlers to have never won a world heavyweight championship title? In companies where their heavyweight titles were officially recognized as world titles in the WWE, TNA, WCW, NWA, AWA and ECW. Here is my personal top 10 list...
1, William Regal, I think he should have had at least one world title run I believe that would have put him so over as one of the greatest heels in history, Especially around the time they brought him into the WWF in the late 90s he could have beaten Austin for it with Vinces backing and helped ignite the Austin/Mcmahon feud.
2, Roddy Piper, In my opinion he is the most famous household name wrestler to have never won the world title would have been nice to see him beat Hogan for it in the mid 80s while they were feuding.
3, Ted Dibiase, Was a great wrestler and the Million dollar man was an amazing gimmick so I'm surprised he never won it, Should have won it at wrestlemania 4 and had Savage beat him in a rematch for it, I remember he did buy it once but I don't think that title change was officially recognized.
4, Dynamite Kid, In my opinion the best technical style wrestler of all time, In his book Bret tried to get him back to the WWF around 1992/93 time, I would have loved to see him win it and feud with Bret or Shawn around this time.
5, Davey Smith, I always liked the British Bulldogs so just for personal prefferance would have loved to see him win it especially on a UK event.
6, Owen Hart, I always thought he was the most talented of the Harts espicially seeing his matches from japan if he had of lived longer would have been nice to see him win it.
7, Bruiser Brody, Would have been cool to see him in the WWE in the 80s feuding with Hogan over the world title.
8, Rick Rude, Think he should have won it during his WCW run in the early 90's or even beat the Warrior for it in their WWF feud.
9, Magnum TA, A lot of people has said Magnum was destined and being prepared to win the NWA title but had gotten injured which forced him to retire, Would have been interesting to see how he done as the champion.
10, Chris Daniels, Now that he's getting a little older would have been nice to have seen him win the TNA world title at some point especially for his part in the sucess of the X division during the first few years of TNA.

1)Roddy Piper-The most over heel in the WWF in the 80s
2)Ted DiBiase-Huge heat in the late 80s early 90s. Would have been perfect just like Piper.
3)Magnum TA-Biggest face in NWA at the time of his accident.
4)Tully Blanchard-Was very over as a heel/face and would have been a perfect replacement for Flair when he left for WWF.
5)Owen Hart-Would have filled the spot vacated by Bret perfectly.
6)Paul Orndorff- Much like Piper and DiBiase, anyone against Hogan is going to get huge heat. Orndorff was #3 of that bunch.
7)Big John Studd-Big, powerful and could work for his size.
8)Arn Anderson- One of the best in ring wrestlers of all time. Held every major title in NWA/WCW except for the world.
9)Razor Ramon-One of the best "big men" wrestlers of our era. Great mic work, and excellent ring work.
10)*Andre The Giant-See below
Im going to put an * beside Andre just cause its silly that a guy that big and that great only got the strap for 15 seconds.
If we were just counting the big two world titles (WWF & WCW/NWA) I would have to add Hennig, Martel, and possibly Rude to the list. I actually count Rude WCW International title/World Championship as a major title reign. I see it really no different then what WWE does currently.

Rick Rude has won the WCW title, the one which was called the international heavyweight title (it was the WCW title of WCW when they had the NWA title)

Rick Rude has won the WCW title, the one which was called the international heavyweight title ( it was the WCW title of WCW when they had the NWA title) HUH? The International title was the physical NWA (big gold belt) When WCW left the NWA they still had a champion wearing the belt so they continued the linage by first calling it the World Heavyweight Champion, then "The Big Gold Belt" and finally WCW International. The WCW champion wore the small global belt.

basically the Big Gold Belt was the NWA World's Championship Belt...but this was also recognized as the WCW Champions belt...basically saying that the NWA Champion was champ of WCW....
when Flair left in 1991, he took the Belt with him because he never got the deposit back he put down on it ( the NWA Champ would put a deposit down when they won th title - this was meant to prevent any refusals to job, because if you refused to drop the Belt when instructed to do so,you would forfeit that deposit)....
Flair was stripped of being recognized as WCW Champion ,but the NWA chose to still recognize him as their World Champion ...which created the schism of Flair walking around still being "The REAL World's Champion!" while WCW had Luger as the new WCW World Champion...this was the first time the overall championship was seperated ,and WCW retroactively went back and said Flair was the "1st" official WCW World Champion during this last reign, effectively saying he held 2 titles before he left (even though it was 1 belt!)...
eventually,WCW got the Big Gold Belt back through litigation, and the NWA was still affiliated with WCW at this time,so you had 2 Championships being defended in WCW - the WCW World Heavyweight Championship ,and the NWA Championship ....i remember the NWA had a tournament to fill the vacant Championship (as Flair was finally stripped of it after he officially joined the WWF) that they showed highlights of on WCW Saturday Night....
so,both Belts were shown on WCW programming and PPV's..... eventually, though, WCW withdrew all affiliation with the NWA,but got to keep the Big Gold Belt.... ant a conundrum what to do with it,it was rechristened the World Championship....however,this confused fans as you basically had 2 World Champions in the same company, and as to which title was more important,or prestigious, was muddled ( Hello Vince!!) ....
finally,to settle it, WCW renamed the World Championship the WCW International Championship, officially delegating it to a "lesser" Championship status than the WCW World Heavyweight Championship....
then, finally, they had a unification match between WCW World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair and WCW International Champion Sting, won by Flair, and both titles were combined into one, with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship being the Big Gold Belt from that point foward....
whew!!
FUN FACT: Sting was originally booked to win the unification match and be World Champ, but once Hogan signed with WCW it was changed so that he could win the title from a heel - Flair....

Your right about Rick Rude I had completely forgotten about that title even though I remember watching him win that match now.

Yeah I got confused at first about WCW have two world titles. I first found out about Rude winning the 'WCW Championship' on the SvR 08 game and said he was a WCW Champion on the loading page so I went onto the internet and typed in 'WCW Championship' and went on the list of champion but I never saw Rude so I though WWE got it wrong until I saw a pic on him wearing the International title and his wiki page only saying ''WCW International Champion'' and saw a pic of the title. And thats how I found out there were two World titles and Rude was a two World Champion!
and thanks for the more info guys!

Agreed about Regal. Even when he won King of the Ring it looked like he might of had a legit shot. He was so great during that time. He did kinda mess that one up for himself, though.

I'm always late on somethings, but what did he do? I believe he was suspended for violating the welness policy. Roddy Piper, Ted DiBiase, and Owen Hart come to mind. I have no clue how Piper never held the WWF title in his career. One of the most entertaining characters ever and he had talent.

Good list, Fromglasgow.
I always thought Vince seemed to be priming Ahmed Johnson for a WWF title run down the line but he lost all momentum after that rash of injuries.

Im glad Im not the first one to say Mr Wonderful Paul Orndorff.......he should be on ALL of your lists.he had it ALL.the talent, the heat, the mike skills the look.should have went over Hogan at least once around 86 in their blistering hot feud. Mr Perfect Curt Hennig: like Dibiase and a slew of others wrong place wrong time.was defo World material though.all those grreat heels from 87-92 were there for ONE reason.to be fed to Hogan on the house show circuit. Million $ Man Ted Dibiase-see Hennig Razor Ramon. so over at the height of his popularity.....pity it never happened for him. Davey Boy Smith. I firmly believe he was en route to the top when he ed himself up in 92.Vince was very high on him after Summerslam 92 etc etc and I feel with time and an unblemished record he would have got there.however I dont think Billington had any potential as WHC though. William Regal. with a strong anti U.S. gimmick and stable behind him Regal was defo worth a shot as champ.a feud with Angle in his wrestling machine persona defending the US would have been epic. and hot too. I consider Rick rude a champ too but in WWF it wasnt gonna happen-see Hennig and Dibiase. Owen Hart-Owen never showed me anything to say he could be the top guy to be honest.very talented but missing an essential ingredient someplace.

Davey was promised a world title in contract negotiations prior to his Hart Foundation run in the mid/late 90s. That was part of the reason he wanted out of his contract when he had to pay 150k to get out of it.
The names that come to mind are: -Roddy Piper -Ted Dibiase -Curt Hennig (AWA champ doesn't count) -Jerry Lawler -Razor Ramon/Scott Hall -Davey Boy Smith -Owen Hart

Owen was entertaining, and I liked him, but he never felt like a world champion to me. And Ive never liked piper. He just bores me whenever I see him.

He's held so many titles that most people dont realize he's never held one of the big belts (unless you count a declining WCCW or declining AWA). Its really tragic too. More names to put on the list..... David Von Erich- Before my time but apparently was a champion in the making much like Magnum TA. Sometimes I wonder if Flair would have been as great as he is if David and Magnum never had their tragic events happen. Dr. Death Steve Williams- I couldnt see him as WWE champion but easily could have been a threat in NWA or WCW. Greg Valentine-Again, couldnt see him in the WWF as champion but as NWA champion during his height in Mid Atlantic days feuding with Flair...Could have been great.

to be fair, the AWA Championship WAS recognized as a viable World Championship by all the wrestling mags and bookers up until the promotion folded in 1990 .... up to that point there were 3 universally recognized World Championships in the sport
NWA World Champion WWWF / WWF World Champion AWA World Champion
....so,to me,any list of previous World Champ's has got to include Henning and Lawler as former AWA World Champions...

1) Owen Hart - Seriously, this guy had the total package and was easily the most hated heel in 1994. It is still mind boggling to me that Bob Backland was given the title over him that year. Owen should have won it and Survivor Series and lost it to Diesel at WM11.
2) Mr. Perfect - Again, another guy w/ the total package, but a combo of being around in the Hogan era and a slew of injuries never allowed him to make it to the top of the card.
3) Arn Anderson - The enforcer of the Four Horsemen was almost as great as Flair IMO, and should have been given atleast one run w/ the NWA World Title.
4) Roddy Pipper - Should have won the title sometime after wrestlemania 1 and then could have dropped it back to Hogan at Wrestlemania 2, but I guess Hulkamania was running too wild back then to take the title off Hogan.
5) Scott Hall - As Razor Ramon, this guy was over like crazy. Problem was Hall was his worst demon and his drug and alcohol problems made it so that he couldn't be trusted w/ the world title. Sad, because I'm willing to be that he would have won the world title from Bob Backland in 1994 instead of Diesel because of how crazily over he was.

I still think War to Settle the Score should have had Piper cheat to win the title and then have Hogan get it back at Mania. With Orndorff and T in the corners. I still think a 1 on 1 title match would have been just as big or bigger then the tag match, especially with the two biggest names in the company.
