Okay, as you can tell I'm new to the board, but I've been lurking and reading, and have been doing figure feds and stuff for a while, just never online. So I guess I'll give the pitch for my fed(s) (explained, below) and ask my questions after. Hopefully some of the veterans in here can help me out.
IoW - Innovators of Wrestling
The basic gist is I guess it's a takeoff on ROH in style. Independent fed based out of Washington DC and the surrounding metro area (northern VA, MD), but does shows up and down the east coast. Focus is more on the wrestling, much like your typical indy fed. High impact moves, good solid matches, with lots of rivalries and feuds based more on the wrestling Currently there is one singles and one tag championship. The fed is currently in its first year, half a year in, and does shows about as often as ROH (two shows a weekend, 2 weekends a month).
Roster: All made up wrestlers, based on my GI Joe figures I've had most of my life (a lot of the made up wrestler names are from what I've used as a kid, and some are pretty similar to the actual figure names... but old habits...). I don't customize figures, it's more of a creative outlet, giving them gimmicks or personalities, and orchestrating the matches.
I've recently started up a second more CHIKARA-like fed called APEX Wrestling, which will have a singles and trios championship. Many of the IoW roster appear on APEX shows, if their style fits, but without a doubt IoW has the larger following. They do shows in the off weekends of IoW.
With that said, some non-kayfabe questions/issues.
1. Setup of arena/ring: I don't have many customized things. The ring is old (blue hasbro) and the figures may look a little small for the ring. Same with the accessories (belts, tables, chairs, etc).
I am slowly working on making customs (my current project is title belts that look normal on the Joes). I don't want to spend a ton of money on something all at once. Next project is making tables out of painted styrofoam and hinges. Hopefully I can make a ring at some point.
I also don't paint or customize my Joes, because I've gotten used to them looking like they do.
2. Text v. Pics: Based on #1, I'd start with text, and include some pics, and maybe move towards pics as it builds.
Based on some of that...
- Is the lack of custom items going to be an issue? I hope this can be made up for with the wrestling. I figure I can add more pics with the more custom items, and as the arena looks better and better.
- I haven't followed a real calendar in the past. I can sort of fix this with using "Year 1, 2, etc" instead of having a show take place in 2009. I make shows regularly but, I mean, the next show is June of Year 1, when I have it. If I speed through years because I like putting together shows, will that be a problem?
- Using an entire made up fed, with new wrestlers to understand or learn, will that be a problem? I figure no, since a lot of feds have customs of made up wrestlers. I don't have Jakks figures, so "well use real wrestlers" won't be a good piece of criticism.
Hopefully I can get some advice from the people who've done this for a while. I guess the best way to do it would be to start a site, put the past results, some background on the fed(s), and just trial and error.
Thanks in advance.
