I'm watching 24/7 and the Lex/Yokozuna match is on shorties. Why didn't the WWF give Lex Luger the title? They pushed Lex so hard in 1993. I can't recall any other superstar being pushed so hard and not winning the title. I understand Lex's ego might have had a bit to do with it. If you watch the Legends roundtable, also on 24/7, you'll understand what I mean. I remember at the time how much I wanted Lex to beat Yokozuna and win the WWF title. Discuss.

I think the match was suppose to go this way and then have Lex win the title at Mania. But then we all know what happened to the Mania thing.
BTW, The Round Tables thing is awesome, I love it, with the exception of Michael Hayze!

I also believe that it was probably for the lone reason that they had wanted to put the title on him at Wrestlemania X.
It was a very confusing situation though. I too never understood it in the past. That big ole celebration over a ... countout?

I hear that the night before or weekend before, Luger got plastered at a bar and basically gave away the ending of the match to a reporter

I remember thinking Luger was definitely going to win the title at SS 93 and was shocked that the match ended in a count out. I guess they wanted to hold his title win off until WM X, but the day before the show he spolied the result to someone and the finsih was changed. Even if he did win the title at WM X, I think he would've lost it to Bret Hart later that night.

I always thought this was really odd booking as well. I mean, they built up Luger all Summer, even going so far as to have 'The Lex Express' and then...nothing.
In my opinion it backfired and the fans lost faith in Lex. Once again he was booked as the guy who always came up short, always choked when the big one was on the line.
And the countout celebration seemed ridiculous. I mean, what was he so happy about? He didn't accomplish anything. Such a waste...

He should've gotten the belt, yes. He was over enough, but then again, some could argue that Crush was over enough on 7/12/93 to have taken the belt (he was...but it was an episode of RAW...where's the shock title wins, 1993 WWF?!). Sucks that neither guy got to hold the belt, but hey, those matches for the WWF Title were actually good.

The only reason I can see why they did the celebration after the count-out win was because everybody was happy that the "American hero" Lex Luger knocked out the "evil Japaneese monster" lol. They were kind of building it up as Luger fighting for America.

The only reason I could have guessed was somehow he may not have been over enough. I think I remember answering that or seeing a question asked similiar to this. That's just a guess. As for the countout celebration, I never did understand that.
I think had they given him the title at that moment, it might have actually gotten him over more so but what's done is done and can't go back and change it.
