So I decided to watch every WWE show from 1997 since that was such a great year. In January of that year, Austin, Bret, and HBK were already giving hints that Vince owned WWF. I don't remember so I figured I'd ask, but does anyone else know of the first time this was ever hinted at?

I vaguely remember Randy Savage hinting at it on commentary.

When Shawn would join Vince on Commentary in the early/mid 90's he'd sometimes hit Vince with a "well, you are the boss here" line. That's something I do remember.

Shawn Michaels was the first one to constantly hint at Vince being the owner, especially during his title run in 1996.

When ECW were promoting their first PPV on RAW King said "You're lucky Vince McMahon is giving you this time blah blah blah and why Vince McMahon allows it, I'll never know blah blah blah".
Interesting discussion though.

I dont know. But as a kid, I had no freaking clue Vince was anything more than a commentator. I always thought Jack Tunney was the boss. lol.

What was the reasoning behind years of Vince not coming forward as WWF owner? Why the big secret?

Just watched Survivor Series 1993 and Bobby Heenan hinted at it. The first time would likely date back to the 80s.

I'm sure it was Jim Ross in 1996 that actually confirmed it?

I just read about Jack Tunney, expecting to find that he was a backstage or front office WWf official. It surprised me to learn he was a Canadian promoter who hooked up with WWF for their Canadian shows.

i swear they made some mention of him being involved with the making of 'No Holds Barred' back in 1989 or so on Primetime Wrestling , so that gave me my first big hint....
another was at WrestleMania IX....it wasn't shown on the PPV,or any of the video releases, but shortly after the card i saw pics of him in the ring, sans coat, holding up Hogan's arm in victory after he beat Yokozuna for the World title...and i thought, why would just an ordinary announcer/commentator come out and do that?
of course,in 1995 everybody knew because Bischoff would openly say it on Nitro,in regards to beating him and pissing him off...

PWI magazine was a keeper of Kayfabe magazine and they always mentioned Vince was the owner in the 80s, that of course was not in the context off WWF programming though.

I had no idea until I read one of Phil Mushnick's anti-wrestling articles in the NY Post at the height of the steroid scandal

Vince was on a talk show in the late 80s where a former WWF announcer (I can't remember the guys name) accused Vince of a hostile work enviornment. This guy was fired after only 1-2 shows and he claimed it was because he wouldn't sleep with Pat Patterson. Vince came out--completely out of his usual babyface character--and looked like he wanted to pound this guy into the ground. It was surreal. They mentioned he owned the WWF and I was floored.
Does anyone remember that interview? Who was that guy Vince fired?
