I've read about them not mentioning his past in 1991 when he returned, but then i watched a match from Challenge on youtube where Monsoon mentions Wrestlemania 3. Still cant understand why they didnt give him more of a push then, they could have had Flair v Steamboat in the WWF, very much a missed oppoturnity imo.

I thought it was a drug test failure, or something. I know Honky wasn't intended to be IC champ and Ricky was to have a longer reign in 1988.
And in 1991, they almost acted as though they'd never seen Steamboat before in their lives, stupidly. Like he was somebody new.

Yeah, when he returned to the WWF, they only called him "The Dragon". Although everyone knew exactly who he was. It's like when The Iron Sheik returned to the WWF when he was with Sgt. Slaughter and General Adnan. They called him Col. Mustafa, but EVERYONE and their dog knew it was The Iron Sheik, but they didn't call him that.

Never appreciated him back in the day when he had that Dragon gimmick and did the fire breathing thing - easy to see why he went to WCW... did his contract expire?

Naturally that included mentioning him being NWA World champion too.

My take on his return was that they didn't trust pushing him again after he asked for time off to be with his son when he won the IC title. It was definately a wasted run, it should have been a big deal.

I KNEW IT. I KNEW that Steamboat was called "the dragon". Other than Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat.
I remember seeing him live, and there was a guy who went on the Turnbuckle and spit fire and he was one of the coolest wrestlers I saw as a kid. I tried telling my friend it was Ricky Steamboat, but he insisted that he never just went by the name of 'The Dragon'. I never cared to look it up either, but I saw him live so I'm bragging!
Now I need to prove my friend wrong, that Steamboat was (who I called) The Dragon Man

They intoduced him as "The Dragon" but they still refered to him as Ricky Steamboat as well.

Listen to Macho Man here: Sometimes the announcers would mess up and still use a wrestlers old name when calling a match. Steamboat was definatley just 'The Dragon" around 91. Same thing with Davey Boy Smith. He was just The Bulldog when he came back as a singles wrestler. One of the announcers called him Davey Boy by accident. I remember in the 80s someone called Haku- KING TONGA when his name first changed. Or it might have been The Tonga Kid.. I know it was one of the 2.

Steamboat' 1991 run in the WWF was laughable at best. Seriously, with his talent he needed to be feuding with the main eventers. Sadly, his highlight of that run was a 6-man tag team win at SUmmerSlam '91.

It was the same thing that was done with Mr. Perfect, British Bulldog, and Texas Tornado (sometimes, which was ever stranger) They would mention their names and, in the case of 2nd generation guy, their heritage. They would go out of their way to not mention anything they'd done outside of WWE though. That was also the case with guy like Dusty Rhodes and Ronnie Garvin, though they at least got to keep their names completely intact.

Pretty sure they introduced the Bulldog as the British Bulldog Dave boy smith

Steamboat asked for time off after winning the IC belt so they were set for Butch Reed to take the IC belt off of him. According to Reed they never told him ahead of time, it was just a “day of” type thing. So on the day the belt was supposed to change hands Reed was admittedly late to the tapings. Patterson and Hogan were freaking out backstage when Honky Tonk walks by and Hogan points at him and says “Give it to him.” And the rest is history.

I thought WWE would have done well to have a Steamboat-Flair redux feud because their WCW one was short. Steamboat and Flair should have traded the WWF title until Bret Hart was ready to be the next big star.

I love Steamboat, but I don't feel sorry for him. He was given an incredible rub by going over Savage at WM3 for the then meaningful IC Title, and then after decides to go on a paternity leave. I'm not knocking him for stepping up to the plate and being there for his new baby, but he knew how cutthroat the business was, so he had to have known what would happen.
IC had a great run as IC Champ, but I always feel cheated that Steamboat did not have a legendary run, it sort of weakend the title a bit looking back.
