...never had blood clots in his lungs and had to retire. Think he may have been world champ? Tag team champ with Savage? No politics? No commentating? I've always pondered this...

I always thought of him as world title material. He really had that it factor and would have been a suitable person to feud with someone like Backlund or Hogan. Have Backlund drop the title to Ventura and Ventura and Hogan feud over it and have Hogan win it from Ventura instead of Sheik.

From the main board, I saw the topic name, I was hoping this would lead to asking what if he was the GM.
Jesse for sure would have been World champion.
Would have been such a shame if he was never an announcer.

Would have been such a shame if he was never an announcer. I think we would/could have gotten both. To me Jesse's days would have been the early 80s. I could see '81-'85 for him as champ. Nothing was going to stop Hogan so he would have probably hung them up by 85 and been announcing anyway.

The whole deal was, Backlund only conceded to drop the belt to someone with an amateur wrestling background.

Hogan/Ventura would have been a great WM1 possibility.

Hogan/Ventura would have been a great WM1 possibility. WM 1 needed the Hogan/T vs Piper/Orndorff main event.

Sometimes you can get in the ring and just "remind them" about how this match is going to go and they can either do it the easy way or the hard way. Ill take a Navy Seal over and Amatuer wrestler any day.

WM 1 needed the Hogan vs Piper main event. Well a month earlier, that match headlined "The War To Settle The Score" and it was televised on MTV. So I don't know how well that would have gone down if they did the match again a month later. They really needed Mr. T for the main event just to get attention, no matter how incompetent Roddy Piper claims T was (shoot wise I mean, not just a work).

I think Hogan vs Ventura at War to Settle the score (as at that point they would have been feuding for a year) and then a Hogan vs Piper at mania would have been better booking. Not sure if wrestling would have turned out the same though.

The basis of War to Settle the Score though was Piper and his bagpipes vs MTV, Lauper, Hogan, and rock n roll. Ventura couldn't be the heel in this as he was very rock n roll, introducing the Rolling Stones in Minneapolis and such. Ventura was such a great talker awesome mic skills and persona but in ring ability he was sorely lacking, Piper was a way better worker
