In the Monday Night War, I was WWE 100%. I didn't watch hardly any Nitros, and missed just about all of their Pay per views.
Recently, I decided to see what I missed. I am going back and watching WCW pay per view events, starting at 1998, until they folded.
I am up to The Great American Bash 1998, and the main event was, of course, Sting vs. The Giant. Now, when The Giant made his entrance, he lit up a cigarette, and proceeded to smoke it until the bell sounded.
How did that come about? Why did anyone think it was a good idea? I know WCW made a lot of stupid decisions, but it seemed so out of left field, and unnecessary.

Leave it to Disco Inferno for an attempt at humor.
Not sure why they did the smoking angle. I remember it didn't last too long though.

to make him more of a heel. because only bad people smoke. seriously, that was the reason.
Show was a smoker in real life too.

I thought it was to make him look more laid back and cocky, smoking until RIGHT before the bell.

It was also a play on the effects of cigarettes, by having the 7ft Giant smoke things that 'stunt your growth', which he uttered to the camera at one point.

Thanks for the info, guys!
It just seems like a lazy way to draw heat. I assume that it didn't work that well, since it didn't last too long. And nobody in either the FCC or WCW's sponsors got mad that one of the top featured guys smoked? Weird.

They were also probably seeing how over Sandman was so they figured they would use that from ECW just like WCW & WWF did with everything else.

I think it was a way of making Show seem like he was apathetic to wrestling. I remember this aspect of his gimmick started with several squashes where he got mad when his opponent tried to interrupt his smoke break. As Jimmy pointed out, Show was a notorious chain smoker so this storyline was rooted in reality. It actually got to be a problem in his early WWE days because it, along with a body weight that skyrocketed to somewhere over 525, made his endurance very poor for a time.

Such a shame that the 1995 monster The Giant, that was around 360lbs, cut and athletic, turned into this fat lazy blob. Fast forward to 1998 and the potential he had to be one of the best big men ever, is now unrecognizable. I don't know why the WWF were in such a hurry to sign him up in 1999, personally he has never impressed me in the WWF/E ever since they jobbed him to SCSA in his first ever RAW match, he lost his aura to me.

For some reason I thought this happened around 96. I remember it at a PPV.

It happened during 1998. I remember him being in a tag match with Bret, and Bret keeping it going when Giant tagged in.

Last week was a perfect example of why he's so remarkable. He put on a tremendous promo with Punk on RAW, then had a solid match on Smackdown that included him taking a monster bump by spearing the ring steps. Can you imagine Khali, Baba, or El Gigante doing those things?
