I know many here love the attitude era. I myself used to look back on it fondly for the excitement it brought every Monday night.
Now, from a storyline standpoint, specifically the McMahon/Hemsley era I still appreciate it.
BUT, after watching several ppv's from that era these last few days I have to say I think we hold it in high regard because, for many of us that was when we were teens.
Looking at it now it's full of gimmick matches and over the top gimmicks.
I think it's time we stop comparing it to today's product as the "end all be all"

The Attitude Era was only good for attracting an adult audience. Everything else about it was garbage.

The WWF in 1999 wasn't 'wrestling', it really wasn't. It was a bunch of stuff happening, mostly talk related, with some actual in-ring wrestling thrown in every now and then. Still, I enjoy it for what it was. It led to some brutal PPV's though.
1998 was similar but the in-ring action was a bit more prevelant. and 2000 had everything.

In my opinion, 1998/1999 were good for growth, but not great for in ring product. 2000/2001 was the time where everything clicked. We had great wrestlers on the roster. Jericho, Rock, Austin, Undertaker, HHH, Foley, Benoit, Eddie, to name a few were all in their primes(or pretty close to it), many of which are still around today. The amount of great matches these guys had in 2000/2001 are unbelievable.
I think it was the greatest time period in wrestling, maybe besides the Hulkamania Era. It was the biggest time period in the business and arguably where wrestling was the most popular and mainstream.

When was in-ring action at it's height for you guys?
I say 2002-2006 or so with gaps here and there and what not. From Lesnar's Debut until Angle leaving.

A few years ago, you would have been blasted for speaking negatively about the Attitude Era. Now? Most people on WF have suddenly jumped on the "it always sucked, never liked it" bandwagon.

If Jericho said he likes to eat his dog's sh*t, they would all start eating their dog's sh*t. trashing a wrestling program and eating fecal matter are two way different things. however I still hold the attitude era in regard. it was the best point in wrestling with the monday night wars and with ECW. would i go back and watch all the old PPV's? no but some of them still hold great nostalgia for me. |

I grew up on the attitude era. I was a big fan of it. But personally I dont find it as great as most people here do. I enjoyed the 80s era, the Alliance angle, and 2003 more. Austin, Undertaker, the Rock, Triple H, Foley made the attitude era as good as it was. Stars were born from it in Jericho, Angle, Eddie, Edge, Christian, Matt, Jeff, and others. But looking back, most the storylines were obsurd and over the top, the matches werent the greatest, and a lot of the roster were that good in the ring. Kills me when people complain about the current product and compare it because even though its toned down a bit, its basically the same thing.

The Attitude era was good. But like others, I think the early Ruthless Aggression era was much better. Evolution, Brock Lesnar, bad ass Undertaker, Eddie. That was my favorite time.

it had it's moments, but yea, it was more of a soap opera then than now, and i'd say overall we get better matches more often (or at least ones that get the credit they deserve)

I mentioned McMahon/Helmsley earlier and cannot believe I didn't think to mention Austin/McMahon.
I think my problem with it now is all the gimmick matches. As I've gotten older I appreciate the physcology of a basic wrestling match.
However, I watched HHH Vs. Cactus Jack from RR 2000 and must say it's a fave. That's a street fight done right

The Attitude Era was total ass. Complete garbage.
However, atleast they didn't treat the fans like intellectually- disabled children..
Todays product is SO BAD on SO MANY different levels. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Austin vs McMahon is one of the top 5 feuds ever in wrestling.but some of the Attitud era undercard was weak.
however I love it and always will.97 got me back into wrestling properly for the first time since 93.
great times IMO.
this PG crap today makes me sick to be honest.the worst thing is seeing a wrestler getting a cut stopped up.that is just stomach churning to me.
