I was at this show live at The Meadowlands in NJ and will never forget seeing Stan beat Martel for the title.
Stan had been a maniac on the AWA scene and it had been one of the only matches I'd ever see him actually finish. I was only 15 or so then and I'll NEVER forget the the fact that the heel made the current champ submit submit, at a big card like that, which I think was on some sort of closed circuit tv or whatever form of ppv was used back then.
To this day, you rarely see a heel come out of a feud winning gold like that from a face. I was probably one of the few Stan fans in attendance as people just got up and left seconds after he won.
Good times and memories indeed.

I thought it was cool how he didn't really "cheat". He just outsmarted Martel (and the ref) by using his own head on the turnbuckle so Martel couldn't break the hold.

It showed a different side of Stan other than just beating the hell out of opponents with that damn bell.
Where in NJ are you from GOM?

Good times and memories indeed. I feel sorry for them. You got to see a great post-match interview. I remember Hansen saying, "I thank Rick Martel for giving me the opportunity although I did have to chase him." Like you, I was a teen at the time and I thought Stan was a complete jerk for that. Now I recognize how great that was. Looking back, I agree that the match was something special. Hansen showed that he could work a non-brawl match quite well.
