........more commonly known as the Bushwhackers.
I remember reading PWI when I was about 12 and being shocked that these 2 used to be this infamous bloodthirsty team that debuted in 1964........and had runs
in.Stampede,SECW,UWF,JCP,Puerto Rico and Memphis as one of the most violent and hard hitting teams in the business.
they defeated the R&Rs in one of the crockett Cups and beat Dr Death and Dibiase for the UWF belts!!.its a pity they didnt get to face the Road Warriors in the Crockett cup......this would have been great IMO
their list of titles also impressed the hell outta me,they held the following Tag Titles.butch wasnt present for all but I think Luke was

I know Vince had them as a totally comic act but its not hard for me to imagine them as a killer team.I remember turning my Hasbro Luke and Butch heel to feud with Demolition,Steiners,LOD etc as this killer team

As a kid, I hated the Sheepherders because they "cost" the Rock n Roll Express the Crockett Cup (I think RnR was disqualified when Morton got caught hitting the Sheepherders with the flag, after it had been used against the Rock n Roll) . To see this vicious heel team become lovable goof balls was weird. But it worked for me, oddly enough. I usually hate the repackaged "Vince"-version of wrestlers that went to the WWF from elsewhere, but even I had to admit that the Bushwackers were funny as hell. But in my classics display, they're the damned New Zealand Kiwi Sheepherders. I just need to get them a New Zealand flag.  |

i'm a total wwf fan so i sometimes have a difficult time imagining what wrestlers were like in other promotions.
to me, the bushwhackers totally sucked. there was nothing about them that i liked.
however, i'll maybe try find some footage of the sheepherders to see if it'll change my opinion!

Ill have to look up some of these matches actually.
not too long ago I watched them face the Bolsheveiks and beat the living hell outta them.there was glimpses of the Sheepherders here because it was revenge for attacking someone.

I had an old videotape where The Sheepherders fought The Bruise Brothers (Pork Chop Cash & Troy Graham). Very violent.
If you can find some older stuff (from Portland or Puerto Rico), you can see how sadistic they were.

They were madmen, and since I watched other wrestling promotions with my dad since he did the tape trading thing, it was strange seeing them as cuddly lovable Bushwackers, but they played the role just as well as they played the saddistic bloodthirsty heels prior.
The Sheepherders/Bushwackers are one of the most underrated teams in wrestling history. I know it's ahrd to take them seriously because of their WWF days, but like I said above they played the part perfectly and got over big time and as a result they had top selling action figures, and merchandise, even their own VHS.

I enjoyed the brief time I saw Sheepherders before they left for WWE. But once they got there I hated the Bushwackers gimmick. Way to goofy for me and I was only 10 or 11 at the time.

as usual my Hasbro figure fed reflected who I liked and who I didnt.
the Bushwhackers were some of my faves.I always used them.I hated seeing them lose so often on PPV though.
I love watching their WM5 etc victories

They were reknown for their cardiovascular conditioning. They once got ticked off at the Road Warriors for no-selling and drew out a match until Hawk was so gassed that he puked on the ring apron.

They were in fact quite an accomplished tag team during their run as the herders, but you have to remember once they came into the WWF in 1989 they were already in their 40s. Their career's were way past their physical prime and I'm sure they didn't mind the increased pay and exposure that went along with their gimmick change.

Luke has done ton of promo work for indy companies and radio interviews, but there isn't any decent shoot interview I know about. I would love to see one if someone has access.

all you need to do is watch the barbed wire cage match back from the UWF where the Sheepherders fought The Fantastics. A hell of a bloody match.
and who would of thunk that their flag boy would grow up to fire and hire whoever he pleases in the "E"?

Hawk and Animal were all over the place in the '80s so I'm not sure all as to which company their matches with the Herders took place. |
