Sting was extremely popular. I remember as a kid everyone in school loved Sting and his merchandise was always the hardest to find.

The Starrcade 97 match between Hogan & Sting had probably the biggest build up to a match ever. How they botched it, I'll never know, a sure fire victory for The Stinger was always on the cards, until it actually happened, then we got stuck with that screwy finish with Bret being involved et al. Ridiculous!

0:22... that will answer your question.
Over 13 years later, that reaction still gives me goosebumps.
What an amazing time to be a fan.

He was also quite popular in Japan in the 90's, which was great for him and for them.
Such energy and charisma...and Starrcade '97s entrance was brilliant...

Sting was nothing special to me. Not at all popular. If he was too afraid to come to the WWF, then he is still a minor leagues guy.

Hugely popular with WCW's audience back in the early 90s, but was never considered a big draw until 1997.

Sting was THE MAN in WCW....so many people loved him and he's not "afraid" to come to the wwe, he doesn't want to work for vince mcmahon if he did come to the WWE, he would get a huge pop and to call wcw minor league would be a joke, since for 80 some weeks they were number 1

Sorry...Every wrestler and I mean EVERY wrestler wants to be at Wrestlemania. That SHOULD be the goal when someone starts a career in wrestling. To be the best right? NOT to be mediocre. Hogan would quit TNA right NOW if Vince offered him the Main Event at Wrestlemania. To say Sting never wanted to be there shows what a puss he is and was. He liked being the big fish in the small pond. To say they won for 80 weeks. Not to me. I never watched them. They never won on my tv and really that's what counts.

Can you really blame Sting for not wanting to wrestle for the WWE? You can have your opinion, but history shows that Vince has quite a track record of undermining major talent from rival organizations simply because he did not create them. And of course a guy like Hogan would come back for WrestleMania. The Hulkster would never pass up a 'Mania payday. Sting was one of the most popular wrestlers during one of the most popular eras in wrestling history. If you don't like the guy, okay, but denying his impact on pro wrestling just because you didn't care for the other product shows pure ignorance. Sting always had a secure top spot in WCW and I'm sure he was paid extremely well by the AOL Time Warner brass. By the time WCW was bought out by Vince in 2001, Sting was already 42. Expecting him to take a buyout on his lucrative contract to work a much busier WWF schedule at that age is pretty ridiculous. And I'm sure after watching the Invasion angle unfold and the misuse of other WCW talent such as DDP and Goldberg, any interest he may have had in joining Vince completely subsided. His Christian beliefs may have also played a role in his hesitation to join a much raunchier, pre-PG WWE. From many of his peers, Sting is considered one of the better guys in the business. He is a devout family man, great to the fans and has given a lot to the industry so calling him a "puss" is uncalled for and immature. WWE will induct Sting into their Hall of Fame once his in-ring days in TNA come to an end. He deserves it more than most and for anybody to think otherwise shows just how little they really know about pro wrestling.

Sting life is not just about wrestling. Its about his family so for him not wanting to go to WWE is fine I think the guy could care less about being at wrestlemania.

He had his chance in 89 to come over with Terry Taylor etc. He CHOSE not to. He wasn't making the "big bucks" from time warner then. He is a puss. Plain and simple. He didn't want to be second to Hogan. I have no respect for him. It's like turning down an Oscar so you can still make independent movies. Turning down the WWF is just like that. He was never a star and never will be. I know more than you do having watched it much longer than you...You who were born in 87. I am 38 and been watching since I was 14. That puts me in 86. One year before you were born. You couldn't possibly have the knowledge I do just because you didn't see things how they unfolded. He may belong in a hall of fame. They gave it to other wrestlers who were never in the WWF. They stayed independent their whole careers. Quite sad really. And I would tell it to his face too. No matter WHAT you do.. No matter what job you do. You should ALWAYS try your best. The fact that he never did speaks volumes about this "family" man. He may have been great at family, but career choices? Not so much.
