Matches are only as good as the man who helps tell the story. I believe its vice versa as well. I have many fond memories of the sounds of Solie,Schiavonne,Russel, and Monsoon calling many great matches. Who was your fav announcer of all time? My pick is the legendary Gordon Solie. With Lance Russell a second...But Solie will always be #1. Even Schivonne in the 80s NWA was awesome. And i remember Trongaurds voice well when i watch AWA classics...So Whats your thoughts?

Gorilla Monsoon gets my vote. He was an amazing announcer. I second this. He and Ventura are my favorite all-time commentating team!

Monsoon & Heenan were the greatest commentary team in the history of wrestling. It's not even close.

Gorilla Monsoon is way better than Jim Ross. Monsoon is the G.O.A.T

Nothing against the thread starter, but a poll to determine the best play by play man in wrestling history that does not include the great Bill Mercer (WCCW) but instead features a schmuck like Joey Styles and the boring, overrated Mike Tenay as poll options, does not deserve my vote. But since I can't vote for my man Bill Mercer, I will vote for the legendary Gorilla Monsoon.

Gino Monsoon all the way. I can never get tired of hearing him call matches. I can even listen to him commentate on Tiger Chung Lee VS SD Jones all day and never get tired of him.
It goes Gorilla then Gordon to Lance Russell to Bill Mercer then to good Ol' JR. And I doubt you'd get an argument on that even from JR himself.

Joey Styles a schmuck? Whatever...still gets my vote. Yelling OMG! and knowing the names to all 38 variations of the armbar do not make you a great play by play man. Neither does breaking kayfabe during on air & calling a match from a smarks point of view. Michael Cole has a job broadcasting RAW, Joey Styles is no longer broadcasting. Styles = Vintage Schmuck, not classic announcer.

Styles = Vintage Schmuck, not classic announcer. It's more than just 'OH MY GOD!' He truly, to me, envisioned what a play-by-play guy could do (besides being the only guy to call an entire PPV by himself) and that is call the match with every intention of it being a wrestling match, (which is what it is) be entirely different to what we've all heard before, and have an air about him that defined him truly as the voice of ECW. Story-telling is fine, and Joey did do that - just not by WWE's standards. Michael Cole is a non-issue, he's the one that has to say exactly what Vince wants him to - good on him, but to me, that's more akin to a schmuck than Styles is.

Fair enough, but Styles schmuck or not has no place being listed in a poll with the likes of Monsoon, Russell, Solie & Ross.

Righto then mate, but if the OP had put Lord Alfred Hayes I'd have gone with him instead perhaps...Not a fan of Ross.
