Was there any reason given for the Intercontinental Championship being gone from October 02 - May 03? Other than the fact they had a title unification match, of course. I always wondered why they decided it would be a good idea to get rid of the belt..

the only explanation was that it was Bischoff "shaking things up" that time in 02.........I hated it at the time

They were putting more midcard IC title worthy wrestlers into the tag team division (Christian/Jericho, Booker/Goldust, Kane/RVD).

The thought was originally to make the IC Title that focal point on RAW, but Triple H thought it wasn't prestigious enough. So they created the World Heavyweight Title and that decision was made that in order to make the WHC more credible it should be the only title on the show, and that unifying it with the IC Title would help.
It was stupid.

I just remember being confused by it going, then by the time it returned at Judgement Day. I had forgotten it was gone.

It returned at Judgment Day where Christian won a battle royal to become the new champion, he defended against Booker T at Bad Blood. Thanks for the replies guys, would have preferred the title to be the focal point of RAW.

From my recollection, it was a pretty poor battle royal...and Christian still had long hair, with the 'whiny' gimmick...

Funny not on the IC / WHC situation. RVD was penciled in to beat Triple H at No Mercy 2002, and unify the two championships as they wanted to give Raw a fresh blood type feel. Triple H convinced the agents that putting the new belt on RVD would fail to present the championship as a truly believable worlds title. Creative fought to keep the RVD champion decision but Triple H convinced enough higher-ups to put the belt on him and have him carry for a lengthy amount of time.

RVD winning it would have been amazing.

RVD winning it would have been amazing. In retrospect, he should've won and dropped it to Triple H pretty quick. That way, RAW would've kept things interesting, RVD would've gotten a push into the upper ranks in wrestling, and Triple H could get the belt back to secure the face chases the heel aspect. Because face it, RVD was over but he wasn't ready to be a flagship. I still remember being genuinely shocked that Christian won. Booker T seemed like such a shoe-in with Jericho and Kane, and then Christian seemed like filler. It was awesome though, because Christian established himself as a killer heel and the Booker/Christian feud was pretty well played off.

Same. The HBK/HHH feud was too intense to not be about the World title. Not to mention there were many more faces on RAW for HHH to feud with, while if RVD had won, they'd have been Jericho, HHH....and that's about it.

I always remember Christian winning the title at Judgement Day. He got eliminated but sneaked back in and stole the victory from Booker.

2002-2004 aren't fondly remembered years for me when it comes to Triple H. Multitudes of talent held down-- Booker T (who should've won at 'Mania 19), Rob Van Dam (who should've won at Unforgiven '02), Kane... who was just outright buried, Jericho, etc.

Eric Bishoff said something like "One brand, one Champion!"

If I remember it right, they were minimizing the number of titles per brand. So that:
Raw had: World title Women's title Tag team title
SD had: WWE title CW title Tag team title
They eventually brought back the IC belt and reintroduced the US belt since they lacked a championship for the mid-card superstars. The CW title was discontinued a few years later and the Divas title debuted, which evens out the championships for both brands.

I wondered that as well after watching No Mercy 2002. They acted like it was the last time the IC title was ever going to be seen. I am so glad that they used their brains again because the IC title and US title are essential to groom future world champs.
