What was the whole with this incident or whatever it was. Why did Jeff lay down and just lose the title like that. Was this Hogan's doing?

It was an angle by Russo that led to a shoot by him. Russo booked for Jarrett to lay down for Hogan and for Hogan to cut his promo and leave. Then Russo would book Jarrett vs. Booker for the title later that night. This would lead to Hogan returning in a few months claiming to still be champion and leading to another angle. This would have gone alright except Russo decided to come out and just rip Hogan to shreds without Hogan's knowing or consent. So he decided to not come back and sued WCW as I recall. Bischoff explained it this way in his book, and it makes sense.

Bischoff explained it this way in his book, and it makes sense. funny because i was watching this last night. russo actually has this posted on his website in detail. what you wrote is encapsulated but pretty accurate. both work & shoot at the same time. i think the missing piece is russo's frustration with hogan during the angle backstage invoking creative control & so forth which led to the shoot when it all went down. one of the things he spoke about in his book is that he always wore yankees jerseys on screen & he's actually a diehard san francisco giants fan. his dad was a giants fan when they were still in ny where as you know he's from. when he came out he wore a giants jersey as if to let everyone know this is Vince Russo frustrated booker and not Vince Russo on screen heel character. |

Just one of Russo's asinine ideas.
Yeah lets hype a World Title match for a major PPV and then have the guy simply lay down for the champ only to have a completely different match later that night. I'd still like to know the thought process with that one and how any could have thought it would have went well. Just watch the audience's (lack of) response during the whole thing. I remember watching this live and it was by this point that I was done with WCW for good.

I remember watching it and getting really confused - I think Russo tried to use his "shock tactic" like he did in the attitude era - only this time it went a bit tooooo far

In Eric Bischoff's autobiography he tells what really was supposed to happen with the angle.
He admits that the WCW title lost a lot of it's luster over the prior years and in order to help it regain some importance he pieced together an angle to do.
Hogan would win the title at Bash at the Beach in some bizarre way and immediately retire stating he is " Tired of the bull here, he has accomplished everything he wanted to, this is my belt, kiss my ass I'm leaving bla bla bla..."
A tournament would begin to crown a new champion, thus making the WCW the main focus of the promotion. It would lead up to the finals taking place at that years Halloween Havoc where 2 heels would battle it out. At the end a winner would be crowned and Hogan would come out and say hey I'm the champion and never lost let's fight it out to decide the real WCW champ.
Russo due to his disdain for Hogan went into business for himself and WCW dropped the angle all together.

That's an absolutely terrible idea and, if true, just shows how creatively bankrupt they were. So there's no champion for over three months (which makes the August and September PPVs a hard sell)... And then they're selling a climactic PPV on a heel vs heel tournament final that doesn't even need to be a heel vs heel match for storyline reasons. It can be a heel vs babyface match with the heel winning and then Hogan challenging them. Also, if the storyline is Hogan's retiring because of the "bullcrap" and he's accomplished everything he wants to, then he just looks bratty if he comes back because someone else has got the belt. |

I had heard that about SCSA. JJ talks about him on the DVD as well. That would've been cool to see had he remained with WWF. JJ also has maintained that the whole BATB scenario had more to do with how WCW was run. |
