- Newsday.com has added a blog from former WWE creative team member Seth Mates. In the blog, Mates explains why the company didn't want the WWE title on Brock Lesnar anymore and how Hulk Hogan lobbied to beat him for the gold at a Survivor Series PPV. Below is what he had to say:
"The plan had been for Hulk to make his big comeback a few months later, and to challenge Brock for the title at Madison Square Garden for the title at Survivor Series," Mates writes. "It would have been quite an attraction—Hogan going for revenge and the WWE Title in Madison Square Garden. Of course, the swerve was that Brock would win once again.
"A month or so before Survivor Series, however, word got back to us that Hulk actually wanted to win the title in the Garden. Ain't no way that was going to happen, especially after Hogan's failed title run earlier in the year, so we decided to go in another direction—namely, to pair Brock up against Big Show and to turn Brock babyface."

Eh... sort of irrelevant now. Interesting... but irrelevant.

I would have liked to see that at SVS tbh but not Lesnar losing to Hogan.

Interesting read...he also said in another entry that the original plan in 2002 was to put have Brock and RVD carry the WWE as the World Heavyweight and Undisputed Titles, but - as has been well-documented several times before - Triple H wanted the title instead, essentially holding RVD down.

it was hardly a failed title reign, its not like ratings went down or attendance dropped. he was over as hell. but what did they expect? as far as i know, the first reign was set to be short term anyway. its not like he did house shows.

I know I may have been in the minority here, but a Hogan/Lesnar match could of been huge as MSG. Instead of Heyman doing the screwjob, it could of been Vince, which would of worked into their WM19 match. The more I think about that, the cooler I think it could of been.

I miss Brock lots. That match would have been decent. But I miss Brock .

I had heard about this before, Hogan thought that he was a better wrestler than Angle, Lesnar, and Benoit. He said it in an interview before.

How was Hogan's title run a failure?

Sorry, but after the way Lesnar punked out Hogan that summer, it just wouldn't have been believeable.

If you had read that entry correctly, you would realise that it wasn't HHH holding RVD down at all. The guy Seth admits that, and what reason would he have to defend HHH when he doesn't even work for the company any more? Honestly, so many so called 'smarks' or whatever they're called are so blind towards HHH it's scary. If you want to see people in a company being held down, watch WCW with Hogan and Nash etc running the show. But, more on topic, I agree with this Seth Mates in that Hogan's Title run in '02 was a failure. He won the Title off HHH in a pretty poor match from what I remember, held it for a month then dropped it to 'Taker in an absolutely abysmal match at Judgement Day. It was nothing more than an ego trip for Hogan.

Sorry, but after the way Lesnar punked out Hogan that summer, it just wouldn't have been believeable. Its not like it would be the first time. Old school fans might remember Earthquake doing the same thing, hell they played it off like Hogan was never going to wrestle again. They built it up big & it worked. I think this would work too.

lol Hogan was such a faliure that Vince made him wear that stupid mr. america mask to take attention from him cause no one cared about Brock and Angle being champions. But don't get me wrong Hogan is out of his mind. I read that he said what so great about HBK cause he flops around. (after hbk slammed him from thier S.S. match)

Man. I would have loved to see Hogan vs. Lesnar at Survivor Series that year. With that on top of the Elimination Chamber, good Lord the show would have been huge! Of course I wouldn't have wanted the Hulkster to win it. Too bad Hogan was unwilling to make a star.
