Channels:

Nintendo has introduced Wii Channels, a concept derivative of television channels. Separate channels are graphically displayed in a grid, and are navigated using the pointer capability of the Wii Remote. These channels (so far) include:
Disc Channel
This channel allows users to play either Wii game discs or any of the entire library of Nintendo GameCube discs.
Message Board
Users can leave messages for other family members on a calendar-based message board. They also can use WiiConnect24 to send messages to people outside the home as well. People can trade photos and text messages with cell phone users. The Message Board can also be used as a tie-in with various software.
Internet
Users download the Opera browser with Wii Points. This feature is to remain free for a short period of time after launch. Users can surf the Internet right from the comfort of their couch. The Opera browser supports Macromedia Flash.
Shop
Users go to Wii Shop to download video game content, including classic video games originally played on the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis and NEC TurboGrafx platforms. Here the users may buy Wii Points with a credit card or redeem a Wii Points Card purchased at retail to add points to their account, then redeem points to download these Virtual Console games. Users also can use points to download the Opera browser used in the Internet Channel.
Virtual Console
After users download Virtual Console games from the Wii Shop Channel, each game will appear in the Wii Channel Menu as its own Virtual Console Channel. To play the game, users simply select the game's channel.
News
Users can access the most up-to-date breaking news from around the world, organized into a variety of topical categories. When connected to the Internet, the WiiConnect24 service automatically updates this free channel.
Forecast
Users can access free local weather forecasts after turning on the Wii console. When connected to the Internet, the WiiConnect24 service automatically updates local weather information.
Photo
This channel allows users to retrieve digital pictures from an SD memory card inserted into the Wii console and display them on their television screen. Users also can manipulate the photos in a variety of fun and creative ways, such as zooming into details or creating mosaics, puzzles or slide shows. Users can even add an MP3 tune from their SD memory card to their slide shows. It provides a fun and easy outlet for people to edit and show off their digital pictures.
Mii
3-D caricatured portraits of users, or Miis, created in this channel can be used on characters across a variety of Wii software. In addition to storing Miis on the Wii, several Miis can be stored in a user’s Wii Remote and taken to a friend’s house to play on another Wii console. Each member of the family can have his or her Wii Remote personalized with their own Mii.
Other features and notes:
- Wii is backwards compatible with the Nintendo Gamecube. The slot-loading disc drive accepts both 8 cm GameCube discs as well as 12 cm Wii discs.
- Video: Component (including Progressive scan), S-Video, or composite output. 16:9 anamorphic widescreen support.
- There are 48 Wii Channel spaces available. These spaces are not all reserved for specialty channels. They can hold a place for immediate access to frequently played games.
- Wii will support wireless connectivity with the Nintendo DS. Nintendo DS will be able to play game demos downloaded from Wii which they would receive from Nintendo, similar to a DS Download Station. Wii will also be able to update and expand Nintendo DS games.
- WiiConnect24, a feature that will allow Wii to remain connected to the Internet in standby mode, will create the ability to download updates for games without having to be actively using the system. WiiConnect24 also stands as a home version of the DS Download Station.
- Wii will feature parental controls, prohibiting younger users from playing games with content unsuitable for their age level. When a disc is inserted, it will read the content rating encoded on the game discs; if this rating is greater than the system's set age level, the game will not load without a correct override password.
- Wii will be able to connect to the Internet through its built-in 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and through a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor, with both methods allowing players to access the established Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service.
Friend Codes are strongly rumored to be from system-to-system instead of game-to-game. This rumor has yet to be confirmed, but with Wii's parental controls it would be likely.Friend Codes are still in place. - The Wii Remote features 4KB of non-volatile memory. It can run up to 60 hours using only the accelerometer function with two alkaline AA batteries and up to 30 hours when using the precision aim. The buttons on the controller are digital and include a D-pad, A, B, 1, 2, -, +, Home and Power buttons as well as a SYNC button located underneath the battery cover.
