Hello! I really love doing these things and re-living the memories of getting these classic BCA's. Here is another edition for all who enjoyed the last two. Again, these are all from my personal collection and I took the pics myself so please forgive any glare or fuzziness in the pics.
WWF GO MENTAL 4-pack
Review: This pack is an obscure one, and a K-Mart exclusive. Back then K-Mart was a hot spot for WWF figures and got way cool exclusives all the time. The pack features HHH, Austin, Taker and the Dude. Unfortunately, it is one of the first JAKKS packs to feature 2/3rds of it being straight-up re-releases … they can’t all be A+. None the less, it was a decent pack.
Triple H: This was a re-release of a series 6 HHH if I’m not mistaken. The first BCA HHH (Superstars 4: BAD BOYS) was really skinny and looked awful to me … this HHH was a huge improvement. It also featured the burgundy attire which I much preferred to the black. I still want JAKKS to make an HHH in this attire. The face looked great for the time and it featured yet again, all new parts specially made for HHH figures (again, later these parts would be used for other figures, but initially, every part on the HHH figure was brand new). I think this is a great figure.
Dude Love: Yet another Slammers re-release. They never came out w/ a Dude Love after the initial figure that wasn’t just a re-release. I guess he wasn’t around that long so go figure. Great fig, but it got old quick with so many re-releases.
Austin: This was only figure in this set to be exclusive to the set … even if the shirt is inaccurate. It should say “Cause Stone Cold SAID so,” not “SAYS so,” but what can you do? Same basic Austin in jeans and t-shirt that had been released in different variations, but everyone was an Austin mark back then and the chance to get an Austin in a shirt that wouldn’t be released again was a cool thing to.
Overall, this was a mediocre pack. The only somewhat outstanding thing about it was a one-of-a-kind Austin and thankfully, that HHH figure was just way sweet. Cool packaging though, JAKKS had all kinds of unique and colorful packaging back in the day.
WWF CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE 4-pack
Review: All I know is that I completely marked out as a small kid finding this pack. You know … never seeing protos or knowing line-ups ahead of time had its perks back then because when something new came out it caught you by surprise at the stores. Anyway, this pack was a limited edition TRU exclusive with the first ever title belts made by JAKKS for the figures. They were pretty detailed and sculpted. It also featured some brand new figures!
Undertaker: At the time Taker was the champ after beating Sid at WM13. This was the first Undertaker figure in his late 96’/97’ attire, wearing all black w/ no purple or grey gloves. It was just cool to have a Taker like this even though in retrospect, it lacked tattoo detail and the face didn’t look so hot. It made up for it with yet again, all new parts from head-to-toe only made for Undertaker figures. The attire was spot on, down to the ties down the sides of his leg and detailing on the shirt.
Rocky: Rocky beat HHH on RAW in a fluke victory to become the WWF IC champ. This figure was the first time we got Rocky Miavia in his black attire (the previous had all been in blue) and the ONLY time we got a BCA Rocky Miavia w/ his entrance attire from Survivor Series 96’. Pretty cool fig. The headmold, as most back then, didn’t look accurate but at the time I could care less cuz the attire looked great and the entrance attire put the fig over the top for me. I believe this is the first JAKKS fig to have entrance attire, actually.
Bulldog: The Bulldog BCA figs were always cool to me. He featured cloth arm ties and then, I believe, again, the whole body was made just for Bulldog figures. This Bulldog had exclusive attire only found in this pack (other similar versions were made in other series, but with different color combo’s on the trunks).
Owen: This was the first time we got Owen in Slammy attire … woooo!!! Even though we’d soon after see this figure re-released in the same attire a few times, it was way cool for the pack. All around great fig w/ cool attire detailing. NOTE: The pack didn’t come w/ only one tag belt, the other tag title was hidden under the carding.
All in all, this is in my top two or three favorite JAKKS 4-packs of all time for having the first title belts, cool new attires and purely for nastolgia. This was the first full year I was into wrestling and I just was in heaven when I got this pack. The packaging is also uber cool.
BONUS LOOSE REVIEW
WWF 2-TUFF L.O.D. 2000
Review: This pack was freakin’ sweet! Incredible detailing and entrance gear. Both came with removable shoulder pads and helmets and both were painted extremely well with even the tiny “Power” logo on the side of the pads. Animal and Hawk even had personalized helmets with each members name on it in addition to Animals having eyeballs in the sockets on the helmet and Hawks helmet having the blank sockets.
They went all out w/ the detail. If you look close on the elbow pads you’ll even notice that Animals pads have small, red paw marks and the front and Hawks doesn’t … extreme accuracy that I have a feeling we’d miss out on today. Very, very cool pack. Both figure are great and L.O.D. also had their very own molds from head-to-toe that no other figures had yet again!
These old BCAs were amazing. As far as I’m concerned, JAKKS could learn a lot by going back and looking at some of this stuff. I am a JAKKS supporter big time and love the current style of figure, but to me they get better and worse. To me they improved in sturdiness, playability and more realistic/accurate decos. However, they have gone down in creating variety of figures, having wrestler-specific molds and paying attention to detail. For example, obviously the hearts on BCA HBK figs looked crappily drawn and nowadays they look great and clean, but at the same time the old HBK BCA’s had their own torso mold and boot mold. It’s give and take, but there are some qualities of the BCAs I’d love to see return.
