The car pulled up to the brightly lit house. It was the only house on the street still with it's Christmas lights on... Which was odd because it was January 4th. Kat's family left the lights on in order to have "an authentic Christmas Dinner" and they also apparently were going to leave the entire house decorated as well just for Kat and Jimi due to the fact that they couldn't make it in time for Christmas.
Kat put the car in park and looked at the two passengers in her car. Kurt took an extra long draw off his cigarette. Knowing how much him and her father disliked each other it was understandable. Jimi was in the backseat wrapped up in a huge faux fur coat with his head laying on beautifully wrapped box just dozing away.
Kat: J-Dawg, wake up.
Jimi mumbled something under his breath and pulled his huge fur coat around himself tighter.
Kurt: Burn Boy get up or I'm taking that bitch of yours to the pound.
Kat: KURT!
Jimi finally got up and the trio gathered up the small amount of packages and headed towards the front door of the house. The neighborhood screamed middle class suburban heaven with just about every driveway having a SUV or a mini-van in it. Kat noticed the look of utter disgust on Kurt's face as his eyes roamed over the snow covered lawns, some dotted with a snow man or two. He looked at her and rolled his eyes.
Kurt: I ing hate the suburbs.
Kat gets a chuckle out it, she didn't exactly like "the burbs" herself. She found the city to be that much more exciting.
Kurt: Every house looks exactly the same!
Kat: Remember what you promised Kurt.
Kurt: I didn't promise anything other than I wouldn't kill your dad.
Jimi reaches the door first and just opens it up without knocking. From inside the sounds of yelling and music being played float out in the street. Kat hurries to catch up to him making sure not to drop the load of presents.
Inside the house, there’s a raging fire going in the living room fireplace and even Christmas music playing on the stereo. Kat’s youngest sister Renee was on her cell phone chatting away with one of her friends a mile a minute. Before Kat could wonder where Nicole was at the Emo-Child stormed down the hallway from the brightly lit office and sat in a chair next to the crackling fire place.
Out of the office stepped Duane, dressed to impress in a suit, which was odd because it was only a family dinner. He had a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other.
Kurt leaned into Kat’s ear and glared at her father.
Kurt: You could’ve told your poor excuse for a Dad that I’m a recovering alchoholic.
Kat: I did.
Duane: Kat! Kurt! Jimi! Put those packages under the tree that should’ve been put up a week ago and come into the dinning room.
Nicole: No one asked you to leave it up.
Duane shot the girl a glare. A short brunette woman walked out of the kitchen. Kat smiled and ran over to her and gave her a huge hug.
Kat: Mom!
Duane: Marie is dinner ready yet?
Marie: Waiting on the green beans and that’s it. Go ahead and everyone sit around the table.
Inside the dinning room was still decorated for the holidays, with garland and tinsel hanging off the walls and two poinsettias on the long rectangular table. Already seated at the table was a tall man in a dress clothes with buzz cut.
Kurt leaned back into Kat’s ear.
Kurt: Is that your older brother?
Kat only nods.
Kurt: He looks like a dick.
Duane entered the room and sat at the head of the table.
Kat: He is and I have no idea where he gets it from.
Jimi takes a seat next to William and grins from ear to ear at him.
Jimi: Sup bro! How’s Uncle Sam treatin’ ya?
William doesn’t speak, he only rolls his eyes. Renee took a seat on the other side of William next Duane, Nicole sat next to the other end of the table while Kat sat opposite of Renee. Kurt took his seat as Marie came into the dinning room with a steaming bowl of green beans.
Marie: Okay everyone eat up!
The family ate in relative silence, the only sounds being the clinking of metal against the good china and the loud, struggled chewing of Duane who sounded like he was going to stop breathing while he ate. Renee then decided to break the uneasy silence.
Renee: So Kat, you’re wrestling this week?
Duane: Don’t start this **** at my table.
Kat smiled and decided to get on her father’s nerves.
Kat: Yeah, I’ve got a tag match. It should be fun.
Renee: So are you and Kurt back together or something?
Kurt: Nah, I’m just here so I don’t have to spend the holidays with my folks.
Nicole: You should’ve let me know that you didn’t want to spend it with your family, I would’ve offered to trade you.
Kat almost spit out the soda she was drinking. Duane growled at both of them as he got and went into the kitchen. She knew that her sister had just pissed him off good. Renee looked uneasy and scooted her chair down a little bit.
Marie: Nicole, you need to cool it. We need to have a nice family dinner for Christmas.
Duane came back in with another beer in his hand and sat back down at the table with a grunt.
Duane: I have to say Kurt, I’m glad you two broke up.
Kat dropped her silverware and looked nervously in-between Kurt and her father. Kurt wasn’t saying anything and that scared her more than if he had. Jimi even looked tense as Kurt still didn’t answer.
Duane: I hated the fact that my daughter was dating an alcoholic.
Kat practically stopped breathing as Kurt leered back at her father. She could see the wheels in his head turning and was praying to God that Kurt didn’t try to start anything here.
Kurt: At least I can admit that I’m an alcoholic.
Nicole: He’s not an alcoholic.
All eyes at the table go to Nicole who had her head propped up on her elbow as she stared back down at Duane. Everyone was shocked that she had defended him.
Nicole: If he was an alcoholic he’d be going to meetings but he’s too lazy to do that. So he’s just a drunk.
Kurt burst out laughing and leaned over to slap Nicole a high five, obviously not noticing the vein that was about to pop out of Duane’s forehead.
Kurt: That was awesome.
Duane pounded his fists on the table which caused Kurt’s laughter to cease. He stood up and made a snarling sound like a dog.
Duane: I invited you into my house for Christmas. If I remember correctly if it wasn’t for YOU THREE we would’ve had this over with by now.
Marie stood and walked up to her husband.
Marie: Duane let’s stop this-
Duane: No! I don’t think so!
Marie: That’s it, I’ll be in the kitchen. Anyone wants a Pina Colada come join me.
Marie made a mad dash for the kitchen with Jimi in hot pursuit and Renee not far behind him.
Duane: I invited you Kurt into my house out the goodness of my heart. You know, it’s not my fault that you’re a complete -up-
Kat: DAD! THAT’S ENOUGH!
Duane: Shut up! I don’t know what the hell my daughter ever saw in you. And I definitely don’t know why she’d even share an apartment with you! You’re a piece of **** and you have absolutely no future. And you know why?
Kurt got up from his chair and flung it to the floor. Kat got up from her seat and tugged on Kurt’s arm trying to get him to calm down.
Kat: Kurt…
Kurt: Why don’t you tell me why since you’ve got me all figured out and all?
Kat: Kurt, settle down please.
Kat continued tugging on Kurt’s arm trying to get him out of the dinning room. He refused and kept his eyes locked on Duane’s. She knew at this point that it might come to blows, her father was more than likely buzzed at this point and Kurt was pissed off.
Kurt: You know what? this ****! I’m out of here!
Kurt stormed out of the dinning room grabbing his leather jacket off of the coat rack. Kat looked at her father and then at her brother William.
William: You should forget about him, I’ve got plenty of pals in the Army who would love to go out with a girl like you.
Kat rolled her eyes. It figured that would be the first time he’d spoken the entire night. That’s exactly what she wanted, to date a guy like William, someone you’d expect to see their picture next the definition of “uptight” in the dictionary.
Kat: I’ll pass thank you.
She walked through the kitchen where the blender was going. Renee already had a Pina Colada in her hand and was sipping away on it . Underage drinking- best to start them off young. Jimi meanwhile was eating the whipped cream straight out of the can. Marie looked over at her as she shut the blender off.
Marie: I’m sorry about this honey. I told him not to drink any tonight.
She dumped the contents of the blender out into a glass and handed it to Kat who just shook her head.
Kat: I think I’ll pass. I have to go talk to Kurt.
She went to get her coat and walked outside where Kurt was waiting in the snow puffing away on a cigarette.
Kat: You just wanna leave now?
Kurt: I called a cab. They said it’d be here a couple minutes. Finish dinner with that jackass and your family. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be out of your hair soon enough.
Kat put her hand on his shoulder and made an attempt to hug him.
Kat: Let’s go inside and open presents. Then when we get home we’ll talk-
Kurt pushed her away and turned his back to her.
Kurt: I’m through talking.
A minute later a yellow cab pulled up in front of the house. The cabbie inside rolled down the window.
Cabbie: Call for a cab?
Kurt walked over and opened the door.
Kurt: Bet your ass I did.
Kat felt panicked, she didn’t want to let Kurt go out there alone. She knew in this state that he could easily fall off the wagon. Before he could close the door she grabbed it and held it open.
Kat: Where are you going?
Kurt yanked the door shut and rolled down the window.
Kurt: As far away from this place as possible. I might see you later.
He rolled up the window and the cab took off down the street leaving Kat standing there in the snow. She barely heard the door open and her mother calling her to come in and open presents. Kat kept watching the cab drive away until the lights finally disappeared over a hill.
Kat put the car in park and looked at the two passengers in her car. Kurt took an extra long draw off his cigarette. Knowing how much him and her father disliked each other it was understandable.
