I did not expect this.
In the past week I have been kidnapped, agreed to help an organization, which includes a girl that was kidnapped a few months back. I then gained myself a shot at the hardcore X title, a shot which I intend to capitalize on.
More thoughts race through my head as I watch the people below me. I sit on the roof of a multi story building, only just being able to see the people below me.
The wind drifts lightly past my face, the hopes and dreams of thousands of people drifting along with it, hopes and dreams that will never come true unless people grab it themselves. I can hear the hustle and bustle below me, people shout as they rush from one place to another, as cars do the same.
Roxy: You made the right decision you know.
I look behind me to see Roxy, the girl who was kidnapped by the Disciples months back, and somehow has popped back up again with Kite and his group.
Trace: I don’t know, I guess it all depends on whether this group gets anything done, doesn’t it.
Roxy: I don’t think you will have to wait to see what Kite can do when he sets his mind to it.
Trace: What, the old mad hatter, with him in charge we will be lucky if he can remember what he is doing.
My words don’t get any kind of reaction.
Roxy: You always where to sarcastic.
Trace: I have not known you long enough for me to always be doing anything.
She sits down beside me, her legs hanging over the edge of the roof, it is very tempting to push her, but I don’t think that it would be in my best interests.
Roxy: Don’t get bitter just because you could not save me from the bad guys.
She lets out a laugh which makes me shudder.
I stand up, anger gripping me, words flow out uncontrollably.
Trace: I could card less who saved you, I gave up caring months ago, and my life has become clearly better since I got you out of my life. The only reason I would ever consider talking to you is because your boss wants to change the world, and I want to see how that goes, so don’t even consider that we are friends.
Hours Later
I now stand inside the same warehouse that I was strapped to a chair in days ago, and not in the cool way. There are still people running around, moving crates and boxes in and out of building.
Kite stands next to me, observing the drones as they mindlessly run around, apparently not aware that they could have lives outside of this place. I have been standing here for at least an hour and Kite has yet to say a word, maybe he is partially sighted and can’t see me?
Kite: I hear you had an argument with Roxy earlier.
I knew it was too good to be true.
Trace: I would not call it an argument, more of an unfriendly discussion.
Kite: It does not matter to me, as long as you too are on the same page when the operation gets on the way.
Trace: I thought it was already under way; didn’t I get closer to winning the hardcore X title last week?
Kite: You have yet to win it though.
Trace: It will only be a matter of time, trust me.
Kite: You need to earn it first.
The last comment nearly sets me off, but I manage to hold myself before making that kind of mistake.
Trace: So what’s next?
Kite: You will need to wait until I get some information from my contact.
I turn to him, and then just realize how decrepit he looks, as if he has lived far too long. His hair seems much greyer, and his eyes seem unfocused on the drones, who continue to work away. That is the very moment that doubt enters my thoughts.
Trace: Are you sure that this is going to work.
Kite: Don’t worry about me child, you keep your end of the bargain and I will keep mine.
I turn and walk away from him, before his leeching voice manages to take away any more confidence in this plan.
This is not going to be easy.
