The night Michael won the International Title should have been a great one. This was after all, something he had worked all of his career for. Three years ago, he had a dance, although very fleeting, with WFWF singles gold. For an extremely short period of time, Michael was WFWF Television Champion, which at the time was his greatest achievement not only in WFWF, but in his entire wrestling career. Although he dwelled in WFWF longer before his sabbatical, he did not get WFWF gold during that time.
Upon returning to WFWF, he was a WFWF champion once again as one half of the tag team champions with Kurt Burton. As great as great it was to be Tag Team Champion, to Michael it could not compare to getting singles gold once again, to know that you were able to win a title without having to rely on someone else.
July 7th was that night. On the other side of the ring was Josh Dean, International Champion. The two fought tooth-and-nail in an evenly matched battle, but in the end, Michael was able to pick up the victory and for the first time in three years, hold WFWF gold.
At any other time in his life, Michael would have been partying all night long, basking in the glory of finally winning the International Title. But no, no he couldn’t dare do that. Lucky him, he happened to have a pretty goddamn big personal matter to deal with. Even after such a great victory, it seemed like he could not escape the news of Stacy’s pregnancy. It loomed over him constantly like a dark cloud. And although it seemed to be on his mind every waking moment, he could never seem to get any answer of whether or not he could raise a child.
Even as he stepped through the curtain after the match, it was still on his mind. He felt happier than he had in seemingly forever, but it still lingered around in his thoughts, but less than ever before. He walked through the backstage area in what is more or less a victory lap after you win a championship. The walk back to the locker room after a big loss can sometimes feel like the walk to your crucifixion. Whether it’s true or not, it appears that every WFWF employee is watching you, discussing how bad your loss was, maybe even snickering. But the walk back after a big victory, especially a title win, is so so great. Despite all of what was going on in his personal life, on that walk back he was able to feel pretty good on the way back. A few people wandering around backstage congratulated him as he walked with the International Title on his shoulder, and he told them thanks or gave a nod of appreciation along the way.
Before he knew it, he was at his locker room. After entering, he just sat there on the bench for a while looking at the title he had just won, thinking of all that he had to go through of this moment. And for this brief moment, his mind was gone from Stacy’s pregnancy.
But that didn’t last long.
Michael hadn’t been in the locker room very long when his cell phone began to ring. He uttered a sigh and slammed the International Title down on the floor. Of course, he knew it would be Stacy. In his anger, he was hoping that she would be just congratulating him, but he knew better than that.
“Hey,” he said, trying not to let on that he was irritated.
“Hi champ,” she replied, and that made Michael feel better and also made him foolishly think that maybe her pregnancy wouldn’t be a talking point for once.
They talked a little bit longer, saying not much of anything except her congratulating him and stuff like that, and then it happened.
“I hate to bring this up,” Stacy said and then Michael knew what was coming. “We still really do need to decide what we’re going to do with the baby.”
“Please, Stacy,” he replied, not really caring if he sounded angry now. “One of the best moments of my life just occurred and I’d like to not think about that right about now.”
He heard Stacy sigh and say something under her breath before she gave a completely impassionate goodbye. Before Michael could even say his own goodbye, she had already hung up. At that time, that didn’t bother him at all. All that mattered was she almost ruined what could have been a pretty damn good night.
Michael knew the one reason himself and Wayne McGurk didn’t beat Obo and Josh Dean on Felo-De-Se. His mind wasn’t in it, pure and simple. That last week had been just about pure hell for him. He had talk after talk with Stacy discussing what they could do with the baby, going everywhere from raising the child to abortion. This wouldn’t have been that bad of a problem for him if they decided on anything, but in the end they couldn’t agree on almost anything.
After all of that, with no progress made, he hadn’t prepared for that match at all. In the end, that was all he had to blame on losing such a big match. And afterwards, he vowed to himself that he wouldn’t let it happen again.
With that decision in mind, he called Stacy and when she didn’t pick up, left a message. He tried to explain to her that he had an even bigger match this week, a non title match against Obo, and he couldn’t let himself go unprepared once again. He did his best to explain that it was necessary to do this and that he’d go thinking about their problem, but even as he was saying those words, he knew it would turn out to be big, big trouble. He knew that she'd say that he cared more about wrestling than her being pregnant. But of course, that isn't true.
