Do we have any FMW fans here? Be fun to talk about one of my favorite promotions with other fans of the product.

Well, it was revolutionary & ground-breaking at the time. But Onita will always be a piece of sh*t to me. He did an angle where he tried getting revenge on Jose Gonzales (the scumbag who murdered Bruiser Brody) and had Gonzales stab him to try to get sympathy.

It's amazing how Onita is so respectful to his mother, wants her approval so badly, but he does such scummy things. I guess it's just people, are people. The angle he taped with Jose was dumb, for sure.
I didn't know of FMW as a youth, when Onita was trying to one-up himself and taking inspiration from Memphis brawls and Puerto Rico stuff.
My introduction came in like 1998, due to Adam Rylands games and the internet in general. Hayabusa was my favorite, as I'm sure he was to most.
Once Tanaka started getting featured heavily on ECW, I started looking more into the actual FMW company as a whole and not just being a fan of one person there.
The "street fight" style of matches, where it's regular matches but all sorts of weapons are allowed, really was the best era of FMW. Deathmatches can be too plodding and slow. Mixing weapons in, provided some incredible matches with Hayabusa, Tanaka, Awesome, Gannosuke, Fuyuki, O'Hara, etc.
Speaking of Mike Awesome, he was fun in ECW, but really.. his FMW work is the best stuff of his career. Even as a member of Funk Masters of Wrestling, he was good. His later run at the top of FMW, the matches with Hayabusa & Tanaka, are so good.
Anyways, looking forward to anyone elses input to. What's people's favorite matches, era, wrestlers, show? Etc?

I still think the 1996 Kawasaki Dream King of the Deathmatch is amazing. Every match was great!

You mean the May 5th, 1996 7th Anniversary FMW show at Kawasaki, or the IWA Japan Kawasaki Dream deathmatch tournament show? I just purchased all 14 commercial DVD releases of FMW, just now, 3 auctions, $150 total shipped.

I remember the first time I heard about that, it had the rumor attached, that Onita's plan was to actually get Gonzales to Japan for the match, in order for some 'legitimate businessmen' to get revenge for Brody. The more time goes by, I see it as more than likely just a rumor, but I do think if Gonzalez had gone to Japan, he likely would have returned to Puerto Rico in a box, as those 'businessmen' would have likely found him and paid him a visit.

I never thought about that. Maybe I should change my opinion about him now. I know it's something I would have hoped to be true, but I don't think there's ever been any real proof that Onita's plan was nothing more than trying to cash in on a feud, as the avenger of Bruiser Brody. Although, like I said, if Gonzalez had gone to Japan, even if it wasn't Onita's plan, he would have likely unintentionally gotten him killed. From what I heard, at that period in time, Yakuza members were big fans of wrestling, and some actually were involved financially in the wrestling business. So, while Brody was a guy that could rub some people in the business the wrong way, he was a mega star in Japan, and either because of being fans of him, or even the financial hit Brody's death would have caused, I'm pretty sure that little coward Gonzalez would have been going home, a lot more rigid than he arrived in Japan.

I'm with you, I don't believe it was part of Atsushi Onitas plan to setup Jose, but he'd never have made it out alive. Call it, divine intervention. Wish street justice would've been dealt.
So I ordered all the 98 DirectTV PPVs from the USAs foremost FMW historian. $54 for 9 mp4s, can't wait to see them in order. I want another 45 shows from him.

I have the FMW dvd with Cactus on the cover. Mr. Pogo was a straight up psycho, in the best way possible. I was surprised that Horace Hogan was big in the promotion too....and how can anyone not love Leatherface!

It's been years, and years since I've seen FMW so my knowledge is pretty much non-existent at this point. But man, like early run FMW stuff was so much fun. Were some of my favorite things to get in the tape trading days.
