My friend Juan lives in Argentina. I haven't heard from him since yesterday. He's in hiding.

Its not Messi's fault that his national manager is rubbish and that his team is a mess. Portugal are rubbish but at least the players know what they are doing and what their roles are. Besides, what does it matter that Argentina are flopping in this world cup? How does that make Ronaldo better than Messi? By your logic Andreas Christensen is a better player than Messi because Denmark have done better than Argentina at this world cup. Ask Ronaldo to put his trophies down on the table. Then ask Messi and see who has more. Haha your one of those that blames the manager for their players failures. The debate will run forever, in my opinion Ronaldo is easily the better player, this world cup just co firms it for me. When Ronaldo wins this year's Ballon D'or they'll be tied on 5. ? If a manager sets his team up wrong, selects the wrong players and uses the wrong tactics then, yes, I would blame a manager for their players' failures. I don't understand how a football fan can doubt that a manager shares any responsibility for their team's selection and performance.

Happens continuously, you can them. But when the manager is basically setting up for a fail? I mean, not much you can do about that.

It's more the tactics used on the pitch that was the problem more than the players picked.

But these are supposed to be world class players, a manager gives his views on tactics but essentially as soon as those players cross that touch line it's down to them

There are some coaches and managers in all sports who will sooner bench a good player for not following his play instructions because of their overinflated egos. A normal coach tells the players "Here's the plan, if it goes to hell improvise and win." Not all of them are like that though. Especially coaches given great teams. Makes them feel bigger than the players themselves sometimes.

But these are supposed to be world class players, a manager gives his views on tactics but essentially as soon as those players cross that touch line it's down to them Absolutely not. If you set your team up to lose it is down to you, the manager. It’s not like the players missed 10 open goals against Croatia. Ok there was the goalie error but they got thourghouly outplayed. It’s like they never saw Croatia play before. That’s down to the manager, his tactics, his preparations, his decisions. This is what Ossie Ardiles said about the game and I think it sums it up pretty well: "Sampaoli: Dreadful. Finished his cycle insulting the Croatian players. Arrogant, ignorant. Even having the best player in the world was not capable of creating a competitive team. Never the same 11 during his tenure." "Plan A of Sampaoli. Give the ball to Messi and wait for a miracle. If Plan A doesn't work, Plan B. Errr. There is no plan B. Let alone plan C or D. Defensively: Make fouls. Wherever it is and regardless of the circumstances, or the consequences." And he said about the players: "To be playing outside of Argentina does not mean they are elite players. Many of them were not even starters in their own teams."

So did Germany just score the soccer equivalent of a walk off home run with that goal in the 95th minute against Sweden?
