The Hickenbottom Report - Ranking the WFWF Superstars
The following is a transcript from the Hickenbottom Report, a podcast that follows all things wrestling related.
Hola wrestling fans and welcome to the podcast. Mike Hickenbottom here about to create some controversy because that's what I do best.
The top promotion in the world is wrapping up its Canadian tour with the Pacific Rim show which should see some great action and a few matches that could shake the foundations of the fed.
Before we get into our semi-regular power rankings, I want to congratulate the WFWF on its new format. The switch to all PPVs has produced some of the best matches we’ve seen in a long time… and some of the bloodiest violence too, which does not appeal to everybody but for those it does they are getting their money’s worth. Whether you are a fan of WFWF World Heavyweight Champion Joe BIshop’s main event run of highly technical, highly competitive matches; the sudden rise of Frank Lynn capped by a surprising win over Trace Demon in a street fight; or the all out gore of Phillip Schneider and Trace Demon; nobody is leaving these shows disappointed. I for one was skeptical when Lila Sleater announced the change but she has won me over.
And now to the WFWF Power Rankings. Let’s get down to it so I have something to discuss with callers and my special guest later in the podcast.
#1 - Joe Bishop
He’s the WFWF World Heavyweight Champ. He’s been taking on all comers and keeps walking out the winner. He’s the cream of the crop folks, as simple as that. If you want to be the man in the WFWF, then Joe is the man you will have to beat.
#2 - David Brennan
The International Champion, the self proclaimed Tag Team Champion, and the #1 contender to the World Heavyweight Championship. That’s enough accolades to cement a spot at or near the top of the list. His career is on the line against Joe Bishop in what amounts to a winner take all match. Can Brennan become king of the mountain surrounded by all the gold or is he about to take another walk away from the WFWF?
#3 - Frank Lynn
Last time around we were ready to give up on Frank. What did the boring hype machine do that changed our minds so dramatically? He showed up, he fought great matches, he beat his rival Ante Whitner, and most importantly he choked out Trace Demon. There are WFWF legends who can’t make that claim. Don’t get too excited though. Frank’s rise is as much a result of attrition in the roster as it is hard work. He has to beat Anna Ahriman to keep his momentum or he could have an equally dramatic slide back down the rankings.
#4 - Trace Demon
By all rights, the former owner should be sliding down the rankings. He has not had a good year. A few wins obtained by the dirtiest tactics we’ve ever seen in between some defeats that raise the question: does the Demon still have “it”? It doesn’t matter how many opponents he handcuffs to fans or hangs from the ropes by their own capes, the lasting images of Trace Demon in 2017 are Joe Bishop pinning his shoulders to the mat and Frank Lynn putting him to sleep. A depleted roster means Trace remains at or near the top… for now.
#5 - Phillip Schneider
The returning legend seems more interested in giving Trace a run for his money as the most twisted psychopath in the WFWF than actually wrestling in matches and winning titles. All he seems to care about is mutilating Ante Whitner.
#6 - Ante Whitner
The Golden Opportunity Champion has hit some hard times. Injuries have sidelined him and Schneider continues to stalk him. He has to get healthy and deal with Schneider so he can get back to the business of defending his title or finally taking his shot at the International belt.
#7 - Anna Ahriman
Samael’s daughter has made a mark in the WFWF but not necessarily how she wanted. She obviously has the potential to be a great wrestler but hasn’t done too much to show it other than tell us how great she is. At Pacific Rim she has to put up or shut up against Frank Lynn. One star will rise and one will fall.
#8 - Sean Casey
The twenty year veteran nobody heard of is making progress in the WFWF. He has a hard hitting, no nonsense style that reflects his years in the business. Time will tell how far his experience will carry him but we have our eye on him.
#9 - Danny Young
Another rookie trying to make some waves in the WFWF but with little success so far. The potential is there but so far the results have been less than spectacular. He could use a win at Pacific Rim.
#10 - Lucas Crowe
Once up on a time the name Lucas Crowe instilled fear in the entire roster. Then he lost to David Brennan at SuperBrawl and disappeared. He’s back… we guess. It’s not like he has had a match yet. If he does return to his old form he could rise up the rankings very quickly.
We almost stopped after the #9 spot on the list. The WFWF roster is depleted due to injuries and retirements. It could get worse if Brennan loses and retires… again. But we wanted to highlight the possible names that could fill the #10 spot and bring the roster back up to strength. We debated a few names including Lucas Crowe, Brandon Bison (#1 contender to the Golden Opportunity), the Future, Jon Gotch, and even the injured Drakz and Joshua Dean. In the end, it didn’t matter which one we picked so we went with the one most likely to wrestle a match the soonest.
Come on WFWF wrestlers. Step up and surprise us. We at the Hickenbottom Report want to talk about something other than Bishop vs Brennan II or the debate over who is the more twisted psychopath: Demon or Schnieder.
