Feel free to discuss. Did he deserve it? If not, then who else?

Brought a championship to Cleveland while coming back from a 3-1 deficit in the Finals. He deserves it.

I can think of other athletes who accomplished things of value this year, but few would compare to the Cavs winning the title under James. Maybe that picture of the 2016 Cubs with the 1908 Cubs sitting on the bench behind them with the team getting the award. But that's about it, whether I like James or not.

I'm trying to remember the standouts at the Summer Olympics and that gymnast Simone Biles comes to mind. She won for an entire country while breaking some barriers along the way. I don't know if it is a bigger deal than Cleveland's first title in half a century.
The Red Sox were Sportsmen of the Year when they ended the curse so it wouldn't be unprecedented for the entire Cubs team to win but its not like the city of Chicago went a century without a title, just the Cubs.

My vote would've went to the 2016 Cubs as a team, but Lebron equally deserves it.

LeBron's the best athlete in the world and took down the 73-9 Warriors in the Finals. I'm down with him winning.

I think because they picked one guy, it's ok that it's Lebron, but I think the Cubs winning the World Series this year is a bigger deal than Lebron bringing a title to Cleveland, unless you're from Cleveland, of course.
The Cubs were picked in Spring Training to finally, FINALLY, break a 108 year "curse," and they were dominant over 162 games. It's difficult to be the hunted and live up to that banner, as we've seen time-and-time again. They showed a ton of perseverance, as a team, throughout the playoffs as well. From beating the Giants in an even year, to Montero hitting that grand slam, to battling through the Bumgarner and Kershaw hype, to overcoming a 3-1 deficit and winning one of the most dramatic and amazing World Series game 7's in baseball history in extra innings, that team stuck together and accomplished it all. Tons of different guys played hero all year long. If you had to pick one guy, it would be Kris Byrant, but that does a total disservice to guys like Rizzo, Lester, Hendricks, Arrieta, Zobrist, and even Chapman for his Game 5 performance alone.
If you're not going to pick the Cubs as a team then it falls to Lebron.
I don't understand the city of Cleveland though. Lebron dumped the Cavs in humiliating fashion. Fans all over Ohio were burning his jersey. He wins two rings with Wade and takes all of the pressure off himself to ever win again. Then he comes back to Cleveland like nothing ever happened, wins a title, with the story really being more about Golden State collapsing than the Cavs winning, and now he wants to pretend to be Mr. Cleveland? (Yeah, we noticed the guy always wearing a Yankees hat was all of a sudden an Indians fan during the playoffs)
Listen, I understand wanting a championship in Cleveland, they waited far too long, but the fans of that city sacrificed their pride to get it. Lebron is as much a villain as he is a hero to that city imo. I guess it's a testament to the fans to forgive and forget, but it doesn't' change what he did. If Lebron never runs off to Miami, that title means so much more, and he's so much more of an icon, but that's not how it happened.
Regardless, Lebron is the best basketball player in the world right now and he just won another NBA Title. You can't really argue that element of it. I'd hardly call him the best athlete in the world though, that's certainly hyperbole at its finest. For the record, you could definitely make an argument for Crosby too. His face on the cover obviously doesn't sell as many magazines, but he had an amazing run with the Pens and the Stanley Cup is still the hardest trophy in sports to win imo.
