Most people recognize Jerry Rice as the greatest wide receiver to ever play in the NFL. I am one of the people that think he is the greatest NFL player of all time. A friend of mine made a statement the other night about how a lot of the UFC HOF'ers wouldn't be as good today because of the fighting styles etc. That was an unfair statement in my opinion and I said that talent transcends time.
With that last sentence in mind, how great would Jerry Rice be with the pass friendly league the NFL has become? I personally think he'd reset most, if not all, of the records that he holds or has held

I think Jerry Rice would've been successful in any era of the NFL.

Thing is, it wasn't that long ago Jerry Rice was still playing at a high level. Jerry Rice would still be ridiculous right now. I watched his entire career, and personally got to witness him destroy the Falcons twice a year forever. His work ethic was unparalleled at the WR position. Combine that with his athletic ability and his head for the game, and it was truly a pleasure to watch him play. He would likely still be the best WR in football right now if he were playing in his prime today.

Jerry Rice is amazing and always will be. If he was in his prime in today's scheme, he would shatter records left and right.

Ill share a little secret that not many people know. Im a huge 49ers fan and Jerry Rice is, was and always will be my all time favorite player. When I started playing HS football I begged to wear #80 (even though I was a lineman). In 5th grade I wrote a letter to Jerry & got a response and autographed picture back from him when I was a Freshman in HS (yep took that long). Ive probably watched more Jerry Rice then anyone living outside of the Bay Area (ok maybe not but ya never know). Ive actually been lucky enough to meet Jerry when he came into town to toss the coin for our local High school rivalry game! With all that being said & getting to the topic at hand, Jerry could absolutely play in the league today. Like TRW said his work ethic was beyond anything most athletes have seen. Guys like TO, Ricky Watters among others have come in to work with him and he (being much older) just ran them into the ground. His desire to be the greatest might be what separates him more from anyone today. He absolutely refused to be 2nd best. Whether he piles the same stats/records is questionable because with the age of the salary cap you dont know what kind of QB & team he's going to be on. Jerry while a great pure athlete was also very blessed with being on the same team as Joe Montana (arguably the greatest QB of all time) and Steve Young as well as one hell of a #2 WR in John Taylor who would be a #1 on pretty much any other team at the time. While there might be more "physically dominating" type WRs like Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, & Calvin Johnson, Jerry's work ethic not only did but still would have put those others to shame. When I went to the Hall of Fame in Oct, I picked this up because it described Jerry perfectly!

Very glad to see that he is endeared. He was my brother's favorite and it's like wrestling, it's what I grew up watching. A southern kid watching WWF, WCW, and Jerry Rice

Jerry Rice is amazing and always will be. If he was in his prime in today's scheme, he would shatter records left and right. He pretty much already did. How far ahead he is of everyone else in terms of TDs, yards, and catches is nuts. Not to mention 22 TDs in 12 games.

Career records is ridiculous. He set damn near untouchable records in a time where it took a man to run across the middle You're right about career I was thinking per season

Does his admitting to using stick-um on gloves during his career lessen his accomplishments? Not here for an argument or even a debate - just wanted to know how a fan sees it. In that day and age, no. It was get ahead by any means necessary. He set damn near untouchable receiving records in an era where you had to have a set of nuts to go across the middle. His talent vastly outweighed any nefarious methods to gain an advantage IMO

Rice in his prime in this era would probably be on pace for 28-30 TD's in a 16 game schedule. The man was that good. Take this into consideration too guys, Rice played in an era where receivers would get destroyed going across the middle, often with a linebacker or safety drilling them up high. With the rules changing on point of impact, that would put him in an even more advantageous position because he could run all the routes (a shot at Moss only going vertical). Receivers could learn a lot from watching him, because he is truly a special player.

I loved jerry rice. Then he was critical about Brady cheating. Then I found out jerry rice had admitted to cheating but nobody took what he said too seriously. Did jerry rice directly apply stick-um to him gloves himself? YES Did Tom Brady let air out of the footballs? NO Despite all the crap Brady gets from nfl fans and the league in general despite all the other players offenses being mostly overlooked,....Brady went to San Fran (his home area) for the Super Bowl ceremony.....and was BOOED! Ray Lewis was cheered. And Brady had to stand next to Lewis and near Rice and others who were critical of Brady.....FOR WHAT! Ray Lewis didn't cooperate in a ing murder investigation!!!! jerry rice! And the league offices and all the owners! Sorry guys for my rant. P.s. Nothing against San Francisco, it is my favorite American city.

To be fair, if you pay attention to a Super Bowl crowd they're not exactly locals. Yes it was in the Bay Area but of the 68-70 thousand there, Im willing to be less then 2-3 thousand of them were even 49ers fans (most of which dont boo Brady). The majority of the fans there were Broncos fans who clearly dont like Brady or the Patriots. With that said, did Jerry Rice cheat? Sure. But I put him in the same category of Barry Bonds. The guy was the best at his position cheating or not. If Rice was making these crazy 1 handed catches or catching balls in traffic it would be one thing but as someone that literally watched all of Rice's career, 90% of the time his route running and speed had him wide open. Im willing to bet without stickum he would have probably dropped less then 100 balls, which for the record still leaves him at #1.

I personally have very low moral standards for athletes when on their particular field of play unless it's attempting to injure others. As a football player I loved jerry rice and Ray Lewis and as a baseball player I loved Barry bonds. I want Pete rose in the hall of fame. I want the steroid guys in the hall of fame. I don't begrudge hulk hogan. Etc etc. I don't care if manning did hgh. When I grew up the patriots were an aweful team. And the 49ers were a dynasty. I was jealous for sure but I was never sour about it. I was never sour about the Bulls or the Cowboys, just the Yankees because of their payroll. I just think jerry rice is a hypocrite. It seems so many people are. And I don't even know what to call Ray Lewis. But I can recognize greatness on the field.

Well, given that he has receiving records that will probably never be broken and he played in a non-passing era, I'd say he would have been even better in todays NFL, b/c his measurable (height, weight, speed, etc) are still relevant today.
