“Mr. Garrett?”
I glance over to look at the voice in the doorway of the locker room. I’ve been getting mentally prepared for what’s to be a sign of things to come at the PPV vs. Samael tonight. This is the chance to send a message directly to DMK and Samael. The voice wasn’t one of someone I had recognized, which does not narrow it down so much seeing as to the fact I choose not to socialize with a great deal of the WFWF roster. None of them really hold up to my standards of someone I’d consider a friend. I only tolerate Chase for the most part. Our relationship at this point is a respective working agreement. Now though he wants to prove himself worthy enough to hold gold alongside me as my partner. Still, I’m still able to control the match when I’m with Chase. I have the ability to maneuver us out of tricky spots if I need to. He has a chance to make a great statement in the main event of the show. First though, I’ll show Chase how to win, then it’ll be simple as monkey see, monkey do for him.
I turn around to face the doorway. It’s a police officer in full uniform.
“Officer, can I help you?”
“You very much can. My name is Lydia Coleman. I’m the Chief of Police in Olympia, Washington. We’d like to speak to you about your partner Chase Landon. I’d like you to come with me if you have the time before the show. If not, we can speak after.”
Landon? Now? I figure I should hear them out and figure out what’s happening simply due to the fact that he has a bit of a troubled past according to Frame. Also, the hotel incident in Los Angeles after the party was certainly something that was not exactly quiet.
“Sure, right now is fine.”
I take a seat on one of the couches in the dressing room next to where I threw my hoodie.
“Actually, I’d prefer if we went somewhere a little less open. Privacy reasons.”
“Okay, not a problem.”
Lydia leads me down a hallway and into a room with a few overhead lights. There’s a handful of other officers and a few guys in street clothes as well.
“These are some of the others that have been working on this. Since he’s a popular guy in culture, we’ve had to act fairly secretly. We’ve had suspicions with Chase concerning the recent disappearance of
Ms. Susannah Frame, the newscaster that’s been covering Chase’s story. I assume you’ve met with her, would I be correct?”
I’d assumed the reason I stopped hearing from Frame was due to the fact that Chase had returned. She was my inside source for him and I was able to help her with some back story on how Chase had acted. It was a mutual pairing. Once that was done I figured we didn’t have a need to be in any contact.
“I have, yes.”
“Under what circumstances did you meet her face-to-face? Was it directly because of Chase?”
“It was. I flew out to Washington several times to meet with her about Chase.”
"When did you meet with her?”
"When Chase had disappeared was the first time. She took me to his condemned home. The other time was to see him in the mental ward of the hospital.”
“What did you and Chase speak about?”
“We didn’t. He refused to see me for some reason.”
“Were you told why?”
“No, the only time after that I’d seen her was when she gave me Chase’s tag title. I never found out if she knew why.”
The whole time the men in street clothes have been writing out what I said at different times. Presumably whatever was most important to their search for Chase.
“Okay, and when was this in relation to Chase’s release and return to here?”
“I’d say a couple months. I mean, there were weird things happening before Chase physically came back. Rats appearing. Stuff like that. So it could have been a pretty large window if you guys are looking for a certain time period.”
“All right. I want to back up to Frame’s relationship with Chase, since that is what we came here for. We felt that you were in contact most with Frame and Chase seeing as to you and Chase are partners here and we assume you spend some time on the road.”
I interject.
“Unfortunately.”
The police glare at the remark. I shrug my shoulders.
“It was basically like taking care of a child. Travel with him was not, and still isn't, easy by any means.”
There’s a brief pause. Coleman checks over to see that the detectives wrote it out. She then continues on.
“Describe how it was. What was difficult about it?”
I shrug.
“I can’t describe it other than it’s like he’s a child and I have to watch him for what’s about a week or so till I can go home.”
“Were there any incidents other than the one at LAX?”
“None that were worthy of mentioning-“
She interrupts.
“I assure you, any story is worth sharing with us about Chase. This is very important. We take missing person cases very seriously. Anything that may have pointed to Chase acting like this is something we’d like to know.”
“He was just quiet. Pretty curt, I don’t think he ever took a liking to me. More so a partnership where he tried to prove he was championship material. I tried to get him to be more outgoing. I took him to red carpet events, interviews, nothing worked. Eventually I just kind of stopped. Well, his disappearance made me stop since for about three months I didn’t know where he was.”
Another pause for the guys in street clothes to take notes.
“Had anything been off about him before that? Where he wasn’t difficult but just acting in an odd manner?”
“Nothing outside of the incident in Los Angeles.”
“Can you take us through what happened? What led up to that at the airport?”
“It started at the red carpet event we were there for. He vanished. I was talking to some people and when I looked over to see if he’d done anything yet he was gone. I went back to the hotel and that’s where I found him. Chase had his medication and the bottles all over the floor. I figured I’d have to get him back home to his normal surroundings for him to be ready at Superbrawl which was only a week or so away at that point. That’s what happened that night.”
“Okay. There’s a reason why we needed you and came here to the show. We believe Chase knows something about Frame’s disappearance. As mentioned earlier though, Chase Landon is an unpredictable case. Sending in police would result in unneeded violence. Besides, this is only a belief. There are no leads to her disappearance. We only believe that Chase may know anything about it because of the fact that they were very close. We know he has a past history of insanity though so we’d rather not directly ask. This would probably do more harm than good. We’d rather not talk to him about the absence of his friend simply because this would scare him quite seriously we feel. That’s why we need you. We want you to get some information from him. Rather than outright confront him and potentially force him to react violently. He would be far more open to talking to you, at least someone he knows, instead of us who he would see as a threat.”
She takes a brief pause. I’m absolutely floored. They want me to spend more time voluntarily with Chase, prodding him about someone who he was very close with disappearing? That seems to be a recipe for disaster. They don’t get it. I’m acquaintances with him only out of necessity.
“Wait, so why do you think he’d have information? Wouldn’t this just cause more harm than good, especially between me and him in what's a pretty important time for us? Not that we’re buddies right now.”
“We don’t know whether he has information or not. All we want to know is what was his relationship with Frame and if questioning him directly would be worth the risk. If he does say any information about Ms. Frame’s disappearance, great, if it’s just talking about their relationship, that’s fine. That’s what we’re looking for.”
I don’t really have any words to express my state of confusion about this, so I remain sitting and wait for Lydia to start back up again.
“This brings us to the main reason. We want someone on the inside of this case. It needs to be someone close to Chase, which is why we thought of you.”
“So let me get this straight, you guys want me to feed you information about what Chase does? Basically be your Chase cam 24/7?”
“Until we get enough information ourselves. We have no ideas on where Ms. Frame could be. Anything that we can get about her would be greatly appreciated. You would be tasked with doing what you already do, traveling with Chase, watching him, seeing how he acts.”
She points over to one of the guys that have been taking notes.
“This is Brian Shirley. We’ve assigned him as the guy you will tell the happenings about Chase to, if you decide to cooperate. On days where you travel together and if he allows you to go to Washington on off days, this is to whom you will speak to about what you guys did.”
he hands me a business card.
“This is everything you’ll need to contact him or us if you need. Chase is, of course, a very wild person with a tendency to act out irrationally. For instance, if it’s somehow found out where Frame could be located, we don’t want you to even think about going to look for her there alone. More could go wrong for you and even us if you do. All you need to do is call Brian or the other number on the card. The other number is the police station. We will be over there as soon as we get the call. All we ask is that you give us the information. Are you willing to do so?”
I pause and take a deep breath.
“Sure, I'll help you guys with this.”
“Great to hear. We will remain in contact with you throughout the investigation. If we need you to look into anything we hear about or that seems off to us we will let you know. We thank you very much, best of luck to you tonight.”
“Thank you.”
I stand up, now drained after that. I walk out of the room, back into the dressing room, and return to my chair in preparation of my match.
Now that I’ve got this on my mind, some would think Samael has an edge because I’m not going to be mentally focused. I can set aside this whether it’ll be at the PPV as we team, or tonight when I go out there and make a statement to Samael and the tag team division. This feud between his team and my team has become a heated one, which goes without saying. This match tonight is for more than momentum or a confidence boost. This match is going to be for pride too. This is my turn to show everyone that Samael, Zmey, DMK, it doesn’t matter, can stand in my way but they’ll get run over if they do. Nothing is going to prevent me from reaching the pinnacle of the WFWF. Being tag team champion is just most important thing to that quest. It’s my first championship. I’m going to hold it from then until the day I hang up my boots because that title to me shows to everyone that even as a rookie I was destined to be the best. Winning that finally gave everyone undeniable proof that I wasn’t just saying that I’m wrestling’s future as a tagline. It showed that I am going to be able to win here, something many people doubted. It validates me, the WFWF Tag Team championship shows that I have arrived.
Now, two men led by a midget want to take that away from me. My prized possession. I’m going to fight with every ounce of my being to hang on to my title because it’s just that, mine. Even though it’s a team award, I won it. I’m not going to let anyone take what’s rightfully mine. Even without Chase I’ve proven to everyone that I have the skill to earn my keep as a champion all by myself. Now the monster, midget, and washed up commentator want what’s mine. The only thing Chase and I have in common at this point is the fact that we both have something to prove. Zmey and Samael both do too. Well, at least the guy pulling their strings thinks so. DMK set out to give his buddy a treat. Some people go and give their pets a biscuit, or food, DMK wants to give his pet a title belt. They see myself and Chase as food too. Two guys that had a good run but are just going to roll over and die any minute now. That’s not how it’s going to happen for them. Proving that we’re not going to be pushed around begins with my match vs. Samael.
This match with Samael is going to serve as my final opportunity to make exactly the statement I want to make. What better way to do it before the PPV, my first title defense, than with one of the guys I'm going to beat down. The first defense was always told to me as the most important. It solidifies you as a champion. It will prove that you're not just good enough to just win a title, you'll be able to keep it while you're being hunted. Being stalked by a group that includes men much more used to being the hunted. Take Zmey for instance. A man his size is very rarely the one that's on the prowl for someone. Yet here we are. The equivalent of a man being tracked by a bear. This battle will imitate that one as well. The bear is bigger than the man, but if you compare their intelligence, that bear is far behind the man. This bear has DMK to lead him into battle, but DMK can't hold his hand the entire match unless he too wants to get beaten in the ring by me. Once you take out the brains, Zmey, just like the bear, is nothing. The man will be able to take out the bear with a swift shot and take him back home as a prize. My prize from this bear will be the WFWF World Tag Team titles.
Samael decided that he’s still got it as a commentator so he joined up with DMK and Zmey to feel good about himself and achieve what he wants. That’s not the way I see him. All I see is a guy who’s either too stubborn or too stupid to stay out of the ring and stay gone for good. I'm faster than him, smarter than him, and no matter what he thinks, better. Samael will get to see this before the PPV at Black Friday. It's should serve more as a warning for him to simply get out of my way. If he doesn't, then it'll be very obvious that his ego is clouding his judgment. He’s here to try and get Michael Kyzer to come back, that’s his ultimate goal. My goal is to show Samael why he should go behind the scenes, step away from the WFWF, and get Kyzer to come back like that. Samael wants me to bring it. Samael will be learning a valuable lesson on Black Friday. A common lesson that many have learned. I’ll make sure Samael understands. Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.
