Detective Bernard Faber was sitting in an Olympia, Washington police station half listening to the Chief of Police, Maria D'alessandro, while he was on his phone trying to text.
D'alessandro, "Detective, did you hear what I said?"
Faber, "I'm sorry about that. I'm still getting used to this phone. I'm not the most technological person there is."
D'alessandro, "I was like that when I got my first phone and now I'm pretty good at using them."
Faber, "Again, I do apologize. What were you saying?" He set his phone on her desk.
D'alessandro, "I talked to your commanding officer back in Danvers and he is allowing me to keep you here until we get this whole Chase Landon thing wrapped up."
Faber, "Thank you, Chief."
D'alessandro, "No problem, Detective. We need your expertise on this. Landon is facing a multitude of charges in both states so we all have a vested interest in seeing him captured. His escape from the hospital only tells us how big of a threat he really is. So we need to be on the look out for him all over the state. He is bound to come back here. He can't stay away forever."
Faber, "If you don't mind, Chief, I'm going to go now and check a few places. Just drive around and see what I can find."
D'alessandro, "Sure thing, Detective."
A few hours later
Detective Faber was getting out of his car where he just arrived at Chase Landon's condemned house. He started surveying the area when he heard a noise. He whipped his head around and saw Chase leaving the house.
Faber, "LANDON, STOP!"
Chase froze in place. "Who's there?"
Faber, "It's Detective Bernard Faber. I'm here to help you."
Chase, "Help me?"
Faber, "I'm just one man. The entire Washington police force is on the look out for you. Would you rather take a chance with me or with them?"
Chase, "How are you going to help me?"
Faber, "I'll take you back to the hospital."
Chase, "I left for a reason. I don't want to go back."
Faber, "You have to finish your treatment. It's not good to leave in the middle of it."
Chase, "I don't care. I was done. If they weren't, that's their problem."
Faber, "I just want to help. They just want to help. Let us help you."
Chase, "How do I know I can trust you? How do I know you'll take me to the hospital? You're from Danvers. How do I know you aren't just saying all this so you can bring me back there?"
Faber, "Why would I need to bring you to Danvers?"
Chase, "Because you know what I've done."
Faber, "Chase, I promise you. I will take you directly to the hospital. You know what, I'll let you drive. I'll give you the keys. I'll sit in the passenger seat. You drive us to the hospital. That way you know where you are going. I couldn't take you anywhere if you are driving."
Chase, "You're just saying that. You hand me the keys and you put handcuffs on me and pull out your gun until back up arrives. I'm not falling for that."
Faber, "You can trust me. I'll show you."
Faber pulled out his handcuffs and unholstered his gun. He looked at Chase and dropped them on the ground. He reached into his pocket and grabbed the car keys. As he was pulling them out he knocked his badge off and it fell to the ground. He extended his hand with the keys to Chase. Chase slowly walked toward the Detective with his hand out. Faber smiled and so did Chase. Faber handed Chase the keys but Chase dropped them.
Chase leaned down to pick them up. "Wow. I can't even hold onto a set of keys. No wonder I couldn't hold onto my sanity." He laughed.
45 minutes later
Chase is standing in his bathroom, staring at himself in the same mirror he broke several months ago. His eyes are open wide and he's grinning.
Chase, "I became one half of the tag champions at Superbrawl. Jayson Garrett made that happen. Just like he's made everything happen for me in WFWF. He's won all of our matches. I've been a burden on Garrett. It would be better if I wasn't around. Or so I thought.
DMK wants the tag titles for his men. The match would be two on one. Garrett would be all alone. Garrett is one of the best wrestlers but he'd still be at a disadvantage. My absence puts Garrett and the titles in jeopardy. Garrett may be the reason we won the titles but I won't let my absence be the reason we lost them.
And I won't be letting Garrett down in our match at 'Men & Monsters'. We're taking on two newcomers. Two newcomers that could be the future of this company. But before we get to the future, let's talk about the past. Brett Diamond and R.J Wilson may or may not know my history but they're going to learn it.
Brett Diamond didn't get much attention from his parents until he became an athlete. I feel bad for him. It's awful going through life not getting attention from your parents. Your parents started paying attention once you became an athlete. My parents didn't start paying attention until I disappeared. Before that my mom was in and out of mental hospitals. My dad was just a no good bastard. Hardly the type of people that will pay attention to anyone besides themselves.
I had to disappear for them to begin to care. When I came back they were sad to find out their son had died. I had to die, or so my parents thought, for them to care. They went to the graves thinking that. They thought I was dead because I had help from a man who was like a father to me. Just like Diamond's coach was like a father to him. Jacques Fairbanks helped me disappear. He helped me become Chase Landon. The real Chase never came home but no one knows that. They think I'm Chase and I'm not going to tell them differently. So to get any set of parents to care, I had to get a new family and it worked out perfectly.
You know, they say diamonds are forever. Diamonds are forever until they step in the ring with Chase Landon and Jayson Garrett.
R.J Wilson says he's unpredictable and crazy. Those words are thrown around a lot. I've yet to meet anyone who's actually lived up to those words. Luckily for R.J, when we are in the ring together he'll get to meet someone whose picture is in the dictionary next to those words. I unleashed an army of rats on DMK and his men. You heard what I did with the help of Jacques. I was institutionalized until quite recent. I am the living incarnation of those words.
He doesn't care if people love him or hate him. I envy that or at least I used to. I wish I never cared. If I didn't care I'd still be Victor Danzmare. But I cared too much and now I'm here. Now I'm somebody that doesn't care.
R.J was ostracized for his style and taste in music. That created or reinforced his lack of caring. If somebody didn't like me I would find out why and try to change that. If they liked me I did my best to keep it that way. I eventually cared about what my parents thought more than anything. I needed them to care and they finally did after I was gone.
R.J may not have had friends and now he doesn't care what anyone thinks of him. He didn't have friends. I didn't have family. Once I got a new family, once I moved away from that whole situation, once my real parents started to care, I could start to care less.
And now I don't care what anyone thinks. I've been down that road and it was quite a bumpy ride. I would rather not make a return trip.
A return trip is exactly what they want. They want me to go back. Back to Eastern State Hospital. I will not go. The road to Hell is paved with good intentions and Hell is just a layover on the way to Eastern State Hospital.
The nurses. The doctors. The same thing every day. You have to wake up. You have to eat this. You have to take this pill. You have to go to group. You have to eat this. You have to take this pill. Group again. Eat again. Pill again. Again and again. Over and over. Day after day after day. You have to. You have to. What if I don't want to? I have to? NO, I DON'T HAVE TO!
That's right. I don't have to. I don't have to do as you say. I only do as I want. And what I wanted was to leave. So what did I do? I left. That's what I had to do. I had to leave.
A routine might fix your problems or at least give you the ability to escape your problems because you have something else to do instead. You wouldn't want to mess up your routine by thinking.
I don't have a routine. Not since leaving anyway. I wake up when I want. I eat when I want. I take the pills when I want. And I haven't wanted to take them so I haven't since the day I left. I had to get their poison out of my system. I've been on their poison for a very long time. Now I'm free. Withdrawal is nasty but it's worth it because I have myself back. Chase Landon is back."
Chase began to shake. He reared his head back and headbutted the mirror. He ripped what remained of it off the wall and threw it on the floor. He stormed out of the bathroom and went outside. He didn't stop walking as he grabbed the shovel that was propped up next to the door. As he walked, the shovel dragged behind him.
The hole was still quite empty. He bent over and picked the gun off the ground and threw it in the hole. He began shoveling dirt back into the hole. After about fifteen minutes the hole was completely filled.
Chase sighed and swept away the sweat on his forehead. He started walking back towards the house when he noticed something shiny out of the corner of his eye. He turned and walked towards it. He looked at the shiny object, smiled and picked it up.
Chase, "He wanted to help me when he couldn't even help himself. Well, this badge will be a nice reminder of how useless everyone is."
D'alessandro, "Detective, did you hear what I said?"
Faber, "I'm sorry about that. I'm still getting used to this phone. I'm not the most technological person there is."
D'alessandro, "I was like that when I got my first phone and now I'm pretty good at using them."
