I walk into the Starbucks two blocks from my hotel. It’s very warm outside in New York, vastly different from how it is in winter where you need to be wrapped up in layer upon layer of clothing. I see him seated down, already drinking a coffee. I take my Oakland A’s hat off and comb my hair back before putting it on once more. I walk over and take a seat.
“Garrett. Nice to see you again.”
“Pleasure as always Shawn."
Shawn Malakai, a guy who stated he had great plans for me. A man who I saved after Superbrawl from a vicious attack. A fighter. The man who chose to hand over his title to Dex and not continue on. He was in town and texted me to tell me to meet him down for coffee at the Starbucks for the Scarlet Hotel, I so happened to be staying there.
“I’ve got your coffee.”
“That’s not needed, don’t worry.”
His short sleeve shirt showed off a pair of skinny arms. He is even skinner than when I last saw him.
"Are you sure? Because that would be helping you out, unlike what you did to me."
"What are you referring to Jayson?"
"That fact that you paired me up with some kid I didn't even know then got out of Dodge after handing him the title."
"I never abandoned you, believe me."
"What're you talking about? In my book, joining up two people as a team just for fun then leaving them to fend for themselves with no direction and huge targets on their back sounds a lot like abandoning them. I could handle own problems, I didn't have to help you out -"
Shawn interrupts me mid thought.
"Well why did you help me?"
I take a pause.
"Because it was something I'd seen enough of. Time after time people rose to the top only for people to attempt to knock them off. I wasn't letting anyone cut in front of me for the title, though you let Dex."
"I did. But you didn't flounder. Heck, you went straight after another top dog. Drakz is a legend, you and I both know that and even in a loss you gave an incredible effort. You'll get another chance too. Your time may not be here yet but it will be."
He stops and takes a drink of his coffee.
"Alright, I wanted to talk to you about something. It's about the title."
The title. The belt that Shawn retired holding. One that he handed to Dex, a worthy man but not near as good as me.
"What about it?"
"I want to tell you that there's a reason I gave it to Dex and not you. It wasn't because I don't believe in you. Far from it. It's more of a lack of belief in Dex. Of course Dex is good, we both know that, but come on. You know as well as I do he wouldn't get a shot unless he was handed it."
"I guess you're right."
"Of course, I know I am. I didn't want to hand you a title, let alone a world title. I know you can win it by yourself. You don't need me to award it upon you like a birthday gift. Dex was on a tear. He retired a legend, he was on fire. It was his time to hold the title, but I knew he wouldn't win it. That's the difference. I know you can win it."
"Thank you. Believe me, I won't make a liar out of you."
"I'm not done yet. I know you can win it. That said, don't expect to. Losing to Drakz knocked you down to sea level. Think though, you'll be going in there with three guys on a mission. Drakz has been bent on winning that title, Demon wants it back and wants to show Lila that he can't be stopped, and Dex needs to prove to himself that he's got it. You're going in there with the wolves. Do you understand?"
Shawn went from building me up to knocking me down rather quickly, but I understand. There are three other great men that'll be standing opposing me in that ring, but that doesn't mean I'm out of the fight. I will win this fight.
"Yes, I hear you."
"Good. What I'm trying to get at is this, win if you can, only lose if you must, but make sure you go out there and give all that you can. Trust me Jayson, I have a plan for you and if you can believe it, it's bigger than even the title. A very select few things are greater than even the title, matches like Drakz/Schneider was one of them for example, and I truly believe this is one. That will only be made greater if you win it."
"What do you mean? What do you have in mind?"
"That my friend is a secret, you know all you need to know. I've got to be going now. Jayson, it was nice to see you again. Remember every thing I've said. Trust in me."
Shawn gets up and leaves out into the summer sun beating against the pavement. I too get up and walk out to take the walk back to my hotel in preparation for my evening show appearance.

The last stop on my whirlwind media tour in New York City, the Billy Thompson show. I met him when he was a comedian about three years ago and I was privileged enough to be a guest on his new late night talk show just a few months after meeting him. I stand backstage next to Rosa, the producer with a set of headphones on talking way too loud because she can’t hear herself.
“Welcome everyone to the Billy Thompson Show! Thanks to you all for coming out and watching! My first guest is an award winning actor who’s now a member of the WFWF, he is one-half of the WFWF World Tag Team champions, please welcome out Jayson Garrett!”
“THAT’S YOUR CUE.”
I’m practically screamed at to head out. Just like my entrance I walk out from behind the curtain in my new designer suit I got the day before in Manhattan, my WFWF tag title over my right shoulder. Billy stands up and claps from behind his desk. I walk over to the sitting area of the stage and shake Billy’s hand before sitting down, taking a drink of the glass of water before setting the championship down on the coffee table.
“Jayson welcome back to the show.”
“It’s great to be back here, I always make sure to stop by here while I’m visiting New York.”
“Yes you do, it’s been a while, but now you’re back and you brought a championship belt with you!”
“As a matter of fact I did.”
I hold up the title for show and the crowd cheers, Billy laughs.
“Congratulations on that. But I know that you’re here, in addition to hanging out, to help promote your upcoming WFWF show right here, why don’t you tell us about it?”
“Well at our show, Battle at the Garden, I’m going to become champion again. Which means next time you see me I’ll have two of these shiny belts.”
“Once you win we definitely will have you on. Now you’re taking on three other guys, how do you prepare for such an unpredictable event? I mean, you can’t pin them all at once.”
The wrestling fans in the crowd chuckle at Billy’s lack of knowledge.
“No, no, it won’t work like that. You’ve should start watching more Billy. (We share a laugh along with the audience) I only need to pin one of the guys, either the current champion Dex, Trace Demon, or Drakz.”
“Dex, Trace Demon, and Drakz? That sounds like a group of carnies to me.”
More laughter.
“Indeed they do, but they are all talented in their own right. I’ve faced all of them but it just so happens though that I am a better wrestler than those three.”
“Well I’d certainly hope so. Now Jayson, you told me before the show that you also came here bearing gifts, after our short break we’ll be calling down two members of the audience to fight in their own wrestling match, a sumo match, where we put two of them in a fat suit and two more have to push them with their eyes closed and they compete in a segment that we’re calling ‘Rolled to Glory’. The winning team will get tickets to the show at Madison Square Garden! Don’t go away, we’ll be right back!”
The band plays us to break.
“AND WE’RE OUT.”
“Thanks again for coming on Jayson.”
“Not a problem Billy, I was here in New York, figured I might as well see if I could stop by on the show.”
Billy is a short guy, not taller than 5’7”, making me seem like a giant over him when he stands up. He’s always had poor taste in suits, the color of his pants and suit coat differ a great deal. To the untrained eye it may seem they’re both black but it’s clear to me that his coat is a very dark navy blue. Plus an orange tie, he might as well be wearing a flowered coat. No matter, I can ignore it for the evening, but I’ll have to make note of it next time we see each other.
“20 SECONDS.”
“Alright, so I’ll call down the people and do some commentary, you just stand there and be yourself.”
“That’ll be easy enough.”
“ALRIGHT BACK IN 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.”
*The Billy Thompson Band brings us in*
“Welcome back to the Billy Thompson Show, I am still Billy Thompson but here with me is WFWF superstar Jayson Garrett and he has some tickets to their upcoming event Battle at the Garden for some lucky members of this audience to win! They’ll be playing a round of Rolled to Glory!”
The band plays an “impromptu” (at least to the audience) theme song and everyone claps.
“Can we have please Gary Parker?” A guy who looked large enough to play the game without the suit walks down the steps. I’m concerned he may get stuck in the suit.
“Next up Josephine Palmira!” Now walks down a petite woman, I figure it’ll be practically impossible for her to push the person in the suit without hurting herself.
“How about Brennan Parks?” Here comes a guy with a full beard and messy remains of hair that looks more like a balding caveman than a contributor to our society.
“Lastly Brittany Michelson!” The last participant is an overly excited girl, jumping up and down, high fiving non-existent hands while coming down the aisle.
“Brittany and Gary you two are a team, Josephine and Brennan you are another. Jayson, tell everyone the rules again.”
“Alright, one of you is in the sumo suit, the other pushes it, the one who is pushing must have their eyes closed. First person to go across the stage and comes back wins tickets. Hopefully none of you get hurt, let’s do this.”
The two girls hop into the sumo suit and get situated at the front. They are huge, if one of them gets pushed on their backs they’ll be flailing like an overturned turtle.
“Alright, ready? On your mark, get set, GO!”
An airhorn sounds and the racers are on their way. They look ridiculous, greed overtaking their minds. Dex, Trace, and Drakz all will become greedy. The three of them will look just as stupid fighting with each other. Not me though. I will be the smarter man. My mind will be in the correct place. There will be no need to be overzealous or to have to hit every one of them. I’ve overtaken Drakz as the master of mind games. I’ll psych them out if I need to, let them fight each other for a bit. Who knows? Maybe they’ll beat each other up so much without me even needing to be involved that I’ll be able to waltz in and make a pin, still fresh as a daisy.
However, I’m sure that won’t be the case. I’m sure Drakz will still want to beat me up or Dex will want to prove himself as a true champion, or Trace will be angry and want to take it out on me. I don’t care though. That doesn’t bother me. I welcome your challenges without open arms because the fact of the matter is this. When I walk out to that ring there will be no stopping me from bell to bell. Whether I need to personally beat all three of you over the bridge into New Jersey or you three do that for me, it won’t matter because the champion at the end of the night is me.
They’re finally halfway done. So far Gary has fallen over simply pushing his partner, they’ve been knocked off the stage by each other twice, and it took Brennan a good 20 seconds to turn Josephine around. It’s mercifully ended when Gary shoved Brittany over the finish line as Brennan continued to struggle going back. I put on a fake smile.
“Good job Gary and Brittany, you two will be able to bring a friend to Battle at the Garden at Madison Square Garden! But don’t be too upset Brennan and Josephine, you two will also be given tickets to attend as well!”
The crowd cheers, they jump up and down, even the men, I shake their sweaty hands and make note to be sure to wash them as soon as possible.
“Jayson Garrett thanks for joining us and for helping out with our ticket game! Don’t forget to get Battle at the Garden on PPV, we’ll be right back!”
“WE’RE OUT. JAYSON, COME ON BACK HERE.”
I give Billy one last passing nod and head back behind the blue curtain, now able to stop thinking about the media. No more press conferences. No more fan meetings. No more talk shows even. I don’t have to think about answers I can give to the press that won’t offend anyone, aside from my opponents. From now until the show I can simply focus on what is truly important, winning.
Battle at the Garden, the next stop on Jayson Garrett’s road to the gold. This next stop will be the last one on this journey because here is where I will take this opportunity to step up and become the next WFWF World Heavyweight champion. There is no better way to close out what has been a great rookie year than winning the title that every single wrestler and even every fan dreams of holding. The greatest capper of my first year is to walk out of Madison Square Garden, the biggest stage of wrestling, in New York City, in the Mecca of the wrestling world, and become a WFWF dual champion.
Dex it should go without saying already that you are one of the few people whom I respect. We’ve been allies before but tonight I apologize because what it boils down to is this, and I’m sure you already know this, it’ll be every man for themselves in that match. You hold what I want to take for myself and call my own. I’m going to beat someone in the middle of the ring in the world’s most famous arena and take the most important championship in the world back to Sacramento. When I take the title out of your possession just know that by no means is it a personal jab. I expect you to be smart enough to know this. The match is strictly business, nothing more nothing less.
Trace Demon, the former champion, the man Shawn Malakai beat for the belt. He’s gone out and decided to make a buddy in a guy a have plenty of history with, the International Champion Joe Bishop, but he’s not the guy I care about. It doesn’t matter that you’ve been the champion before, and this goes for all three of these men, I don’t care about who’s walking in as champion or who’s been the champ. In a building where history means so much it means nothing at all to me here. All that I care about is who will be walking out holding that belt high up in the air with pride. That won’t be you Mr. Demon, you can continue with your Final Revolution after the PPV, trying to keep making impacts, but I’ll be walking out of Battle at the Garden having made the biggest statement to date, having won the WFWF World Heavyweight championship.
This brings me to Drakz. I expected to be done with you following our battle on the way to the Garden, and to your credit though you hung with me. Congrats on that buddy, you won’t be so lucky though this time around. But as I said, history doesn’t matter, I don’t care that we drew, and even now I wouldn’t have cared if I won. What I’m focused on is the same thing Dex, Demon, and Drakz will be as well, the title. I want it more though. I want it more than all three of them combined, as crazy as you think that may sound. I want my first taste of singles glory, not that I didn’t do everything as tag champion, but I’m setting my tag titles to the side for the evening. What I’m desperate to have is the most prestigious belt in the wrestling world. Drakz you found out first what I’m capable of and you got lucky it was a draw. If it didn’t stop at a time limit you can be sure that I wouldn’t beaten you in that ring and given everyone an early preview of Battle at the Garden, me coming out with a victory.
Battle at the Garden will end a year-long quest to climb to the top of Mt. WFWF, and I’m right there. Now I just need to throw off the other three hikers that intend on setting foot atop the peak first. The title is one match away. I can feel it. Being in possession of the WFWF Tag Team championships isn’t enough, even though I hold Chase’s right now too. I want singles glory. I need to prove to everyone that doubts that I’m better than Drakz or Dex or Trace that; in fact, I am the best that the WFWF has ever seen. Right now, I’m just a battle away from winning my war.

It doesn’t matter that you’ve been the champion before, and this goes for all three of these men, I don’t care about who’s walking in as champion or who’s been the champ. In a building where history means so much it means nothing at all to me here. All that I care about is who will be walking out holding that belt high up in the air with pride. That won’t be you Mr. Demon, you can continue with your Final Revolution after the PPV, trying to keep making impacts, but I’ll be walking out of Battle at the Garden having made the biggest statement to date, having won the WFWF World Heavyweight championship.
This brings me to Drakz. I expected to be done with you following our battle on the way to the Garden, and to your credit though you hung with me. Congrats on that buddy, you won’t be so lucky though this time around. But as I said, history doesn’t matter, I don’t care that we drew, and even now I wouldn’t have cared if I won. What I’m focused on is the same thing Dex, Demon, and Drakz will be as well, the title. I want it more though. I want it more than all three of them combined, as crazy as you think that may sound. I want my first taste of singles glory, not that I didn’t do everything as tag champion, but I’m setting my tag titles to the side for the evening. What I’m desperate to have is the most prestigious belt in the wrestling world. Drakz you found out first what I’m capable of and you got lucky it was a draw. If it didn’t stop at a time limit you can be sure that I wouldn’t beaten you in that ring and given everyone an early preview of Battle at the Garden, me coming out with a victory.
Battle at the Garden will end a year-long quest to climb to the top of Mt. WFWF, and I’m right there. Now I just need to throw off the other three hikers that intend on setting foot atop the peak first. The title is one match away. I can feel it. Being in possession of the WFWF Tag Team championships isn’t enough, even though I hold Chase’s right now too. I want singles glory. I need to prove to everyone that doubts that I’m better than Drakz or Dex or Trace that; in fact, I am the best that the WFWF has ever seen. Right now, I’m just a battle away from winning my war.
