I was wondering if the Mattel design guys ever make personal figures for themselves.. Like,if during down time, they use their equipment to make a AJ Styles or a KENTA figure for their personal collection...I know if I had the skills and equipment ,I'd have all sorts of figures that don't actually exist.Just a random thought while waiting to go to work.

Doubt it, it would cost way too much. I can almost guarantee they do all the designing here and then ship the designs/files oversees for production. That's why they all say "made in China" and the only way mattel makes money is making these things in bulk. I don't doubt that they make their own fix-ups and customs, however, there's no way they use the same process to make a personal figure that they use for mass production lines

That'd be cool, but I doubt it

not to mention the legalities around using unauthorized images of folks to make those specs to be sent to China. I mean it would be cool and all but you'd have to have a resource to sculpt the 3D real scan of the person's face and as cool as it would be, AJ Styles works for a completely different company that owns rights to his image.

Not to mention that they would need someone to make head sculpts. I believe an outside company does that.

They did make a Gobbledy Gooker and Im sure one of them has it. They probably do have some stuff that was made but not released due to lack of air time for that character or whatever.

On top of everything else, I'm pretty sure using company time and equipment for personal use is probably frowned upon...

If they do, I doubt they would come on this forum and talk about it....

I think they might take some unused prototypes, paint them if need be, and put them in their collection.

That's a cool video, don't think I've seen that one before. I doubt they'd have time to design unlicensed prototype figures for their own collections, and the company would frown on it. They probably also don't want to focus their efforts on stuff they're not getting paid for. They're getting to make toys of the biggest names in the business anyway, there's enough happening that they don't worry about obscure guys like Styles and Kenta.
