I think one way to bring about the legends line is for Mattel to produce a catalog (online or in print) of wrestlers who have they have signed and with photos of their various attires that can be produced. Instead of mass producing them and placing them on Matty Collector that limited people's choices.
Sort of like people who buy custom parts for their cars, not everyone drives with spinner hubcaps but people who do buy them from time to time. Mattel would still get the majority of their profits from the Rumbers, Brawlin Buddies, basics, and elites. This idea could add revenue from a group of fans that if Mattel marketed better could provide them with great albeit small, but significant revenue.
Flashbacks could still be marketed, but let's face it real old school fans may never get say the Junkyard Dog or Bruno Sammartino simply because they might not sell well in comparison to The New Aged Outlaws or X-Pac because let's face it younger fans don't know who JYD was. They do the late 90's stars; and the older stars that the WWE markets to them. So Flashbacks could still be sold, but this "catalog" would be marketed to older fans.
This is how I would do it if Mattel created this catalog.
Have photos of each star signed with the attires provided as stated above.
When a buyer orders one, Mattel produces that figure for them, and only one figure only for that buyer . Here is were Mattel would get money rather than producing a massive amount of figures so that they would collect dust in a warehouse (which what happened with Matty) it would be made by a consumer based want. The figures might cost more in end, but for old school fans we would pay upward to $30 for someone like "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers or Haystacks Calhoun.
How do you folks think this would work? Plus how can or will old school fans get more old school wrestlers from this company. Or is it a lost cause.

Mattel has stated they have to make a minimum of 5000 figures to even make a profit on it. There's no way they would make just one. You're talking about $20-$30 (if its an online exclusive) for a figure yet it would take hundreds (maybe thousands) of dollars in man hours to produce it. Not happening.

once we figure out how to get more current wrestlers.....than we'll work on getting more legends.
*on a side note.....I wasn't around for Jakks. But i see them in the classifieds and on ebay. And everytime I do, it surprises me when I see figures of ppl like Ernie Ladd or Stan Lane.
How the heck did Jakks pull that off? Mattel acts like WWE will lay the smackdown on them for even thinking about releasing jobbers/low mid carders

lets just say they have the molds for all of they body types needed to make any figure. It takes time to chang over the machines to run the parts. Not to mention that I doubt the first Piece they run comes out perfect so they have to run a few to get it working right and get geet pieces coming out. then you have to do this for each piece of the figure. So we are talking hours in payed labor that would add up to more than the figure could be sold for.
I like the idea, but it's just not practical

I thought there were only like a 5 current yet to be produced and they were on their way. How about we give the repaints a break and start producing new to line figures every time.

That one figure would cost you at least a thousand dollars, probably more. Like someone said above, they have to set these machines. You can't just turn it on and crank out one figure and then recalibrate the whole thing with different paint aps and such. Mattel isn't Ferrari, they're Toyota. They don't make limited specialty toys for the super rich; they mass produce 1000s and make their profits a few dollars per pop, but they sell so many that it adds up to a lot.

Are there gaps? Without doubt. But they gave collectors 181 unique names in the CS and some new faces in the LOTR line. I think JAKKS just had more room for experiementing with names. Plus for a long time, anything that was released in a CS packaging was a hit.

I personally just don't understand what all the love for the classic figures is.....I mean, I like the old-timers as much as anyone else because those are the guys I grew up with, but they all had there time in the plastic world. Just about every wrestler that people keep clammoring for already has a figure produced in a different line from there own era. They had there time, now lets let the new guys get there figures made as well.

LJN's and Hasbro's had almost no articulation and very limited detail - you couldn't "play" with them. Not that I "play" with my Classic Superstars, but it's kind of like finally finding the toys I never had when I was a little kid...

Mattel's contract with WWE is ruing up soon, I don't know who is goinng to be making figures next. But i dont think mattel is going to be doing much eles BUT making figures like they've been doing. I would've loved nothing more to have the Legends line continued rather than have rumblers or powerslammers whatever they're called. I just hope to god MATTEL makes a freakin 1994-1996 Undertaker!
