I always had the theory from a storyline perspective that they were The Undertaker's. He was meant to be a supernatural dead guy, wasn't he? Also he "got his power back" from it. Taker's a zombie.

The ashes have changed over the years. At one point, it was the ashes of his fallen foes. In the attitude era, it was the ashes of his parents. The last couple of weeks, it was Paul Bearer's. I always had the theory from a storyline perspective that they were The Undertaker's. He was meant to be a supernatural dead guy, wasn't he? Also he "got his power back" from it. Taker's a zombie.
