Looking at the Mattel Legends line its obvious there are some great figures but clearly some bad attires (Sarge, Snuka) but it seems to be the nail in the coffin was the way the series were put together. Mattel didnt seem to be able to create the right mix. Releasing entire sets without a guaranteed seller in the whole set. either based on the performer or the attire they were wearing not being the right one. Especially the tag team series. How did they decide to make the bushwackers over the Nasty Boys, LOD, Horseman, Powers of Pain, Bulldogs and so many teams that are more of a guaranteed sale? And then with the matty exclusives you have to wonder how those were "really" the figures chosen. Not Barry Windham, JYD etc. It would seem to be a gigantic loss to the collection to be relegated to just flashbacks now. Is it possible now that Mattel seems to be getting a feel for what sells in "flashbacks that a true legends series either in stores or online will ever be reintroduced? I would really like other figures specifically carded as legends to go with my Legends collection.

I actually liked the way mattel was going with the line. Only mistakes IMO was sarge, snuka, and sheik and volkoff. Sheik sucked and they just released him in series 2. The Hall of Fame series was a joke. They should have been differe t attires. I actually like the Bushwhacker figures. They have great sculpts and perfect attire. Im still dreaming of a legends comeback with mattel keeping there old stratgey of mixing the eras.

They have ppl signed that they didn't at the beginning. Macho, Warrior, Bret Hart.
When they sign Sting, Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan......I can see them relaunching the legends line.

You also have to remember that a lot of people (like the Nasty Boys) might not have been signed to Legends deals at the time. I agree though they could have mixed up the assortments. I for one love the Terry Funk figure but realizing that a lot of kids only know the Attitude Era, I would have had Funk in his 80s attire but at 1 per case and then had an Attitude Era guy like Austin at 2 per case. 80s figures are for adult collectors and they're a little bit more rare. The Attitude Era figures are more for the kids so its best to please both types of collectors but do it wisely.

If they can somehow get them all around the same time, they can pretty much treat those guys (plus Warrior, Taker and HBK) the way they treat Rey, Orton, and Punk now, which means we could see lots of variations of them. A classic, late 80s Hulk and elaborately robed Ric Flair will relaunch the line properly and with gusto. Hopefully it happens in the next year or two.

Hell I would Love an Annual Legends Series.... One Series a Year with 6 Singles and a 2 Pack... Put it in Flashback Packaging and make the majority of the series stacked with big names

Maybe we can get one series of mostly flashbacks each year on top of the others released in each series.

Why not release 4 legends sets a month? Exclusively online, maybe mattel and Ringside can strike a deal or something. Either way I think its lame that they release the garbage that is Flexforce, Rumblers, and PowerSlammers. And yet can't incorperate legends somewhere in the mix.
Then again, they said the Elite Scale ring didn't sell. And yet it goes for hundreds of dollars online.

Not to mention how fast they would move if they were exclusive to RSC or Matty Collector. I am sure the Matty Collectors did great with online sales...

Not to mention how fast they would move if they were exclusive to RSC or Matty Collector. I am sure the Matty Collectors did great with online sales... If they did that I would never buy. I won't pay $50 for a figure that should hit retail and we all see how popular figures and exclusives get marked up. I would rather the be a retail set. Also matty already said there is not enough sales to have a line based only on online sales. so I'm glad all of their elites come through retail. I say If mattel and RSC ever did strike a deal to bring legends back as RSC exclusives I hope they put something in the contract saying RSC can't jack the prices up past oh idk $25 per figure. I'm not bashing RSC I know they are a business, but I'm a consumer. Without the consumer there is no business. So I feel a fair price is not double retail just because it's almost sold out or expected to sell well. You never saw Mattycollector a online based place sell for double retail just because it was a hot figure or shorter stocked. It was just over retail from the day it went up to the day it sold out. every figure was what $20 and about $10 shipping now thats fair. Thats also why they got my business. Then the had the rockers 2 pack for $30 another great price.

I've always thought that the Hall of Fame series and tag teams were the death of the line. The Bushwhackers were outstanding figures and sold very well around here. Piper and Sheik already had (superior) figures released, and Orton/Volkoff weren't going to move any $30 sets themselves.
If the HOF series had just been a little different, it would have done better. If you dropped the HOF name and just made it a K-mart exclusive, this would have been the perfect opportunity to have Steamboat in white, Jake or Rude in different tights, LOD in red, NWA Dusty, Austin with red highlights instead of silver, etc. and every one of those would have been successful.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks was that WWE didn't want active wrestlers in the line, which meant no classic HBK, Undertaker, Kane, HHH, and so forth. This kind of crippled the line from day one, because they couldn't do what Jakks did and rely on sure-sellers like gloved 'Taker and HBK in tights to get the ball rolling while they acquired big names not working for WWE for later waves.
Series 2 and 3 being mostly mid-carders really hurt the line's success, IMO. Series 1 started off strong with big names, but we should have been seeing the more timleless wrestlers like Andre, Piper, and DiBiase from the get-go instead of names that appeal more to older collectors like Funk and Sheik.
As far as "what could have been," taking into account the general time frame that talent was signed, I've always thought that if it weren't for WWE's restrictions, Mattel trying to keep the entrance greats and Defining Moments lines afloat, etc. I would have thought the line should have gone something like this:
Series 1: Shawn Michaels (red tights) Undertaker (purple gloves) Andre the Giant Stone Cold Steve Austin Ricky Steamboat Sgt. Slaughter (camo)
Series 2: Jake Roberts (green tights) Jimmy Snuka (barefoot) Roddy Piper "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase Kane (masked) Rick Rude
Toys R Us Tag Teams: Legion of Doom (red) Demolition Bushwhackers
etc., etc.

The Legends line has grown on me more since I started collecting them. I have 37 Legends now including some of the TRU 2 packs and online exclusives and I appreciate the line more now than I did when I started collecting them. I actually think for the most part that the choices were good and the attires gave us something different. Mattel is restricted in who they can make so we didnt get some of the stronger characters in wrestling off the bat and that hurt a bit, but oh well. I really like the packaging of these figures as well.

Why does eveyone hate on the Sheik/Volkoff 2pk? That was the first set I bought and I liked it because of the fact that Sheik was in attire that wasn't as obscure as the L2 figure. Volkoff is a really good figure and I like the jacket they gave him. Please tell me if there is something I am missing.
If anything I thought the point of the 2pks was to increase sales buy giving us 1 redeco... perhaps a barefoot Snuka down the road... and one new figure. I will say the Piper/Orton pack did suck, but that is only because Piper had a terrible headscan that looked more like Bob Saget than Roddy Piper. I think the Bob Orton figure is outstanding.
I will say this. Since Mattel does like to focus on the fluff lines (i.e. Flex Force, Rumblers, Power Slammers, etc) Why not just give us some Legends in those lines.
Last night I bought my very first Rumblers in which I got the Rampage versions of CM Punk, John Cena, and Kane. I bought these so my kids could have wrestlers they can play with, since they are instructed to leave mine alone. I couldn't help but think to myself that it would be nice to Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, Bret Hart, etc so we can have some cool matches.
If Mattel/WWE is going to go through all the trouble to get a past Superstar signed why not make as much merchandise as possible in all formats of their WWE line. What a waste.

I never really understood all of the hate about that Piper scan. It always seemed to me that Piper wasn't always serious or snarling, he usually was acting like a smart-ass with that big goofy grin where he had his top teeth sticking out. Of course, it's anyone's personal opinion if they don't like it, but I liked it better than the EG, myself.

I think mattel really needs to take a step back and see that the legends lines lack of success was poor planning and execution. Not a lack of interest in legends line. I really don't understand why we didn't get a second year of Matty collector online figures. And I really have a hard time believing the line isn't far more profitable than producing current superstars who are all different shapes and sizes and have crazy tattoos and hair. Legends are basically similar parts with a headscan.

Right - the interest was there, but the perceived lack of interest was only because they utterly flooded the market with the first two series and HoF set and created way more of a supply than there could ever possibly be a demand for. It was an Atari E.T. scenario, except the product didn't suck.

if/when hogan ever signs again i'd love a nWo hollywood hogan.. i missed out on the jakks one and when i got around to it they were 50+
but really, i'd love to see this line get re-launched, but like other people have said they need to be able to do current superstars that are signed like triple h, taker, kane, etc.
mattel could even still have their love fest with cena/rey/orton.. i'd like to see a WCW or ECW rey made and they could release a Cena from his debut with the purple/yellow shorts or from his Dr. of Thuganomics gimmick with spinner US title and chain.. possibly an evolution Orton too from his first world title win
