Had a brand new Wal-Mart open in town, so made it a point to get to know the overnight stockers and toy employees. The workers were already aware of scalpers and were eager to assist a collector. So with that said, I get a call yesterday that Wal-Mart received 4 cases of Elite figures, which they'd hold for me before putting them out.
So I get there hoping it is Elite 12, 14, or 15. Alas, here was the breakdown of the cases, which were factory sealed and opened right in front of me:
Elite 13 Case with normal assortment 1 case with all 8 figures Elite 12 Alberto Del Rio 2 cases with a mixture of Elite 12 (only ADR) and Elite 13 (yes, E12 and E13 were sealed in the same case), with heavy emphasis on Rey Mysterio and more Alberto Del Rio
I'm on the border of Mexico, so it seems to me Mattel is starting to produce regionalized cases. Have they already been doing this, or is this another case of poor distribution? I say poor because although I'm virtually in Mexico, there are still pegs full of Mysterio and Del Rio BEFORE these cases arrived. They don't sell. They're peg warmers. The weird thing is Elite 12 and Elite 13 figures being delivered factory sealed in the same case?!
I saw this with Starting Lineups and McFarlane SportsPicks back when I collected them. Dallas would get cases full of Cowboys and Rangers figures, Houston got cases of Astros and Oilers/Texans figures, etc. That worked for sports figures. It doesn't appear to be working with wrestling figs.
As a collector, this distribution sucks. Is anyone else seeing the same thing? Is Mattel going to a regionalized distribution model? Or is it limited to regions like southwest border towns, with Mattel thinking luchadors and Mexican wrestlers will actually sell in this region (despite not actually selling)?

They probably have alot of elite 12 Del Rio to get rid of so they are packing them in with other elite series and dumping them on you...or maybe they think Del Rio will be popular down your way.

Stuff like this is obviously a production problem bud. Distribution is actually getting the cases in your store. How they pack the cases revolves around who there producing in each series and how many. I don't think distribution is a problem really, as everyone seems to find Mattel in there stores, its just the problem of production. MDT is producing to many Cena, Orton, Mysterio etc per series and not enough new characters which is what the collectors and kids who play with there figures are in demand for. Over producing of the big figures is causing shelves to clog and us to all see less of who we are all after, which is the same new characters.

This is what I hope happened: They took pegwarmers from other stores, boxed them up and sent them to your brand new store. Maybe they didn't have anything else to send but since it's a new store they didn't want empty pegs on day 1.
Speaking of McF sports, one of my Walmarts had a full case of Phil Simms on the pegs. After sitting for months they disappeared. About a week later they reappeared at another Walmart 5 miles down the road. It's possible the Reys and ADRs were just moved between different stores.

I've found with new stores they seem to get alot of their stock from other stores. So they were probably overstock/pegwarmers from other WalMarts that got sent there to fill the shelves until they can get enough new product from their area distribution center.

I have a great idea. How about all these stores that are sitting on these pegwarmers send them back to Mattel and then Mattel can melt them down and recycle them into figures that people want. Hell, it might even keep some costs down, and all those Cena, Rey, and Ortons won't go to waste.

Then you more so than anybody can feel my pain. Nothing worse than the excitement of being there to crack open a case, or in this instance 4 cases, and discover roughly 22 of the 32 figures are either E12 Del Rio or E13 Mysterio. Ahhh, the problems of a toy collector!

Whats the difference between you and a scalper, sort of contradicting your self their huh pal? what you do is the exact same thing scalpers do and they even pay the night stokers to call them when stuff gets in for first dips. Any way Funny to me.

Scalpers just go and buy up everythin valuable so they can sell it to make a huge profit.

Any way Funny to me. Glad I could amuse you. Keep coming back for more . . . Not that I need to explain myself, but I didn't arrange this little convenience. The Wal-Mart stocker saw me there with my 3 kids, I asked if they had any more figures in the stockroom, he said "no" but we have 4 cases coming in 2-3 days from the warehouse. Then proceeded to ASK me if I wanted him to call me when they came in. I gladly accepted the voluntary assistance, and you would have likely done the same. But hey, if I'm that entertaining and make you laugh, I guess I'll continue to be your little WFIGS court jester. ;D
