Drag Me To Hell, Paranormal Activity, The Grudge, The Ring, The Strangers, The Omen (Every one of them), The Exorcist, Saw, The Final, The Human Centipede, Dawn of the Dead (the remake), The Church, Final Destination, and Quarantine are all movies that disturbed, scared, grossed and/or creeped the hell out of me. They are my all time favorite horror movies.

I know a lot of people disagree with this, or even flat out hated the movie... Paranormal Activity. Nothing, ever, has even come close to bothering me the way that movie did and still, to this day, does. I was never the type of person to be freaked out or bothered by horror movies. I could watch pretty much anything and sleep soundly at night, never to think of it again. Paranormal Activity changed that. Not only did it keep me awake for days, it weakened my mental psyche when it comes to any and all horror movies. Films I could have watched without even flinching five years ago now drive me insane. No film has ever had that effect on me before, and I strongly doubt another ever will. I'm absolutely terrified of what I can't see, and that's what made me so uncomfortable when watching Paranormal Activity. Everything felt so real, so menacing. I saw the movie twice in theaters and haven't been able to watch it again since. I own both films, primarily out of respect to the filmmakers, as I doubt I'll ever watch them again. The other thing that absolutely terrifies me is the Marble Hornets Slender Man series on YouTube. I'll tell you, a few guys with a camera and a knack for story-telling made a far more compelling saga than nearly any horror movie franchise could dream of doing. It's terrifying, so much so that I can't even continue watching them. That is some deep sh it, ever though about seeking mental help?. How can it keep you awake for days?. Not trying to be cruel.

Movies haven't scared me since I was about 13, but I can be caught up in the atmosphere of a film. My biggest ones are these:
The Shining - Watching Jack go slowly insane was quite disturbing, so when he did snap and go after his family, it had more meaning and impact. Only one or two jump scares near the end, which were actually effective because of the suspense.
The Orphanage - Subtitled, so if that bothers you, you won't like it, but me myself forgot I was reading subtitles shortly into it, it really brings you in with an awesome atmosphere.
Halloween - The Carpenter version. They spent so much time building up Laurie that you actually cared about her, thanks in part to a great performance by Jamie Lee Curtis, and since we knew nothing about Michael Myers, it made it scarier, just knowing this psychopath was going after her, not knowing any reason why or anything about him made it scary, which Rob Zombie ruined with his version.

I'm way too desensitized but I refuse to watch Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I had a nightmare about Leather face when I was A kid, before I'd ever even seen or heard of Leather face.

I highly recommend it. I've played horror games and watched many horror movies and for some reason its the only that truly scared me. Well besides Silent Hill 3.

Stir of Echoes is probably still, in my opinion, the creepiest movie I've ever seen. The Exorcist is great, but it just doesn't freak me out like Stir of Echoes.
I will say I was quite surprised with Insidious, that's the next creepiest movie since Stir of Echoes.

Without a doubt, The Exorcist. I have this vivid memory of being about 7 and seeing the trailer play on TV, which among other unsettling things, has that shot of Regan's face. oh god that face. It literally kept me awake for years and to this day, I get that same feeling of sheer terror for a split second every time I see it. I've since seen the film at a sleepover when I was about 15. After spending a good 45 minutes of the film hidden in my sleeping bag, I actually watched it properly and it wasn't that bad. It's more just the idea of that girl being tied up upstairs. Still though, pay me any amount of money and I would not watch that film alone. I guess it's fair to say it traumatized me as a kid and has still made a lasting impression today. Doubt I'll ever fully get over it.
Honourable mention has also got to go to the American adaptation of The Ring. Yeah, it kind of relied on jump scares too much, but it serves it's purpose as a very well crafted horror film. That shot of Samara crawling out of the well and slowly pacing towards the camera... chilling. It's funny to think how much of a babe the actress who played her turned out to be.

I never sleep with my door open, but the night I saw that for the first time, I not only slept with my door open but I left the hall light on all damn night!!

horror movie never really do their job other than campy uber violence (if there can even be such a thing). psychological thrillers have shown me the human psyche is by far scarier than any monster or crisis.
but i guess the one movie that really rattled me was space odyssey 2001...it really captures the fascinating but also surreal and alien force of life.

I will never understand why people thought/think The Strangers is scary. That is the only movie that made me go from "run bitch" to "just ing kill her already".
