This usually means that they got a crap reception at toy fair from retailers. from toynewsi.com/news.php?catid=288&itemid=15506"We had posted some images of Playmates' new 6" Lucha Libre Luchador figures which were on display at the Diamond Comics booth during the 2010 New York Toy Fair last week, which you can see below. Because some of you had asked when these were due out, we went to the folks at Playmates to ask them about release dates. Unfortunately, according to them the line is currently on hold and they would let us know about any updates if things change."

Apparently Playmates is having troubles... as a true staple of my childhood and the makers of ninja turtles for 25 year now, this makes me very sad.
Add to that the fact that these figures looked really cool it's doubly sad.
I hope things work out for them and things start progressing again.

How often does this happen with new lines?

Not only are they are on hold. According to Toymania they are dead in the water. They will not be made at all.

I'm guessing that they were not able to secure a TV deal for AAA in the US, which would not give retailers much of an incentive to carry the line, thus causing the poor sales & the cancellation of the line.

I really don't see how this is a surprise. Was there any real doubt that these figures would be anything except shelf warmers? Not to sound negative, but excitement from a few members on this board is hardly representative of the actual market.

Stores usually will take a chance on a new property they'll designate usually 3 pegs to it not knowing if it will be shelfwarmers or not. Its wrestling and wrestling sells. a few years ago they took a chance on the tna line it didn't do well but well enough where it had shelf space for 2 or 3 years.

I was really excited for this line tbh. I think in a Mexican market they would sell like hotcakes.

TNA has and had much more nationwide exposure than AAA. I don't think that's a fair comparison.
