I was looking up info on what can cause plastics to change color over time, and this is a really interesting article. Granted, this pertains to video game consoles and not action figures, I think the same concept applies. LinkWhat do you think?

Very good article and probably a lot closer explanation to these variants.
It makes sense that the figures are also triggered by oxygen and why we have not seen any of these variants moc.

To me, unless there is a CLEAR MOC version of the variant shown, I believe it to be merely aging. I mean with the Macho Man #4, he has no "OH YEAH" on his lepel so this would be a legit variant it more were to turn up.

I agree to a point. Macho w/o "oh Yeah" on a card or say even a Bret w/o a heart carded would be errors, not variants. Rude's pants or Martel's outfit in different shades are variants, not intentional by Hasbro though.
Variants are usually a "running change" intentionally done by a toy company. Kamala w/ moon is a variant and a prototype since it was never released to the general public. Slaughter w/o name on the card is an error since obviously quality control let some of the cards slip out to the retail market.

It makes sense that the figures are also triggered by oxygen and why we have not seen any of these variants moc. I think this is the answer, but hey, I could be wrong. I also noticed the point about how it has to do with chemical residue, which could explain why some turn and some don't. Now I'm wondering... has there been a carded example of Rick Rude with pink tights? Out of all of these color variants, that's the one that I most suspect possibly could be a legit variant.
