A report from their showing at the dallas toy fair:
LUCHA LIBRE AAA -The Ultimate Wrestling Property Invades the USA in 2010
Lucha Libre AAA has been an unstoppable phenomenon in Mexico for over 17 years. Loved by fans of all ages, only LUCHA LIBRE AAA delivers the high-flying action and outlandish antics of Mexico’s beloved Luchadores. With almost 50 million Hispanic-Americans in the U.S. and an already established professional wrestling fan base, Lucha Libre AAA is a rapidly-growing success on this side of the border. In anticipation of the North American expansion of Lucha Libre AAA, Playmates Toys Inc. will launch an officially-sanctioned line of Lucha Libre AAA USA toys and collectibles for kids and collectors alike in August 2010. The line will include highly-detailed and fully-articulated Luchador action figures in two scales, authentic role-play masks and championship belt and the signature hexagon ring as featured at
Lucha Libre AAA events. Cookie Jar Group’s licensing division, Copyright Promotions Licensing Group, will help launch numerous cornerstone categories at mass in Fall 2010.
This also means that the line will not be out for long... playmates won't know how to market or handle this.

Looks like 2010 is going to be the year of wrestling figure war - Mattel v Jakks v Playmates. Could be interesting.

every toy news site is picking up the news on the playmates showing in dallas (not just AAA, star trek, turtles, etc...) no pics yet, but I'm sure they'll surface soon.

Due to a change in cable providers, I've been able to follow AAA on Galavision for about 3 months or so. I can't wait for the figures as I'm now fairly familiar and recognize who most everyone is. However, I'm afraid that most mainstream consumers won't be as willing to shell out the bucks for a non-WWE or TNA figure. Maybe if AAA can get their English language series up and running, things may change, but otherwise, I don't see this line satisfying more than the handful of collectors out there. I personally hope that they make some of the more recognizable US names like Mark "Jindrak" Corleone, Jack Evans, and Teddy Hart.

Sweet! I'm probably going to be buying more of these than Mattel WWE, Jakks TNA, or Jakks UFC figs. I'm hoping we get:
* La Parka * Dr. Wagner * Silver King * Mesias * Cibernetico * ElectroShock * Nicho * Joe Lider

It's why generic masked wrestlers sell well, bootleg or just off properties like Mucha Lucha and the like. or go by Rey Mysterio alone. Lucha figures shouldn't have too big of trouble moving, especially if they are priced well. a masked guy that's $6 compared to a WWE guy that's $10 = buyz

I totally get your point, Ruby. I think the more generic point I was trying to make though, was that I don't think that luchadore based figs will sell as well as WWE or TNA ones , especially at first, because of the current lack of tv exposure in America, but that may certainly change within the next year or so. I see plenty of young children, hispanics included, in my neighborhood wearing John Cena shirts, but the only lucha products I can find are random bootlegs at the local Dollar Tree. It's all about exposure and availability. I really hope that this deal with the Cookie Jar folks and Playmates works out though, as I would love to see something more than some cheap bootlegs. I do understand your point though, Ruby, and appreciate the feedback.

If the show gets US exposure like they hope, the video game gets released (youtube has the preview) and the toys hit, there could be a hit somewhere in the franchise. What worries me (besides the previous statement) is some US marketing dope trying to put a power rangers spin on the luchadores & turning into a giant goof-fest.

Lucha figures shouldn't have too big of trouble moving, especially if they are priced well. a masked guy that's $6 compared to a WWE guy that's $10 = buyz 2 things. you are correct about kids liking colorful masked guys, but this is AAA and more than half of their wrestlers dont wear masks and the ones that do are mainly low carders who almost certainly wont get figs. and the second thing is that these figs will not cost $6. TMNT figs cost $8.99 at retail when they are first released. expect similiar pricing to that for the normal sized figs. they announced 2 scales, which means we'll probaly get smaller 2 packs at $5.99 that are the same size as their version of hasbros superhero squad figs that they did with TMNT. also all of this is based on the assumption that retail stores will actually buy a line based on a property that has absolutely no exposure outside of Mexico. Galavision just airs the feed from their mexican channel a month later, and they are about to lose AAA completely soon anyway, which will mean no tv at all in the US. children want toys of things they know, watch, and like. Playmates has no direct service website which means that the figs will basically be only sold online to collectors. basically the 11 people who posted in this thread plus probaly the other 15-30 who havent seen the thread yet. thats not enough to keep this line going past one wave.

Well, I am going to reserve judgement until I see some protos. If the figs are in line, or at least close to RA then I am all in. There are sooooo many lucha figs that I would just love to have. This could be really good news.
