I work at a comic shop and we just got in new comics/magazines. The new issue of Lee's Toy Review have a 5page Article called "Guide to AWA Wrestling Figures" It has pics of every figure and variants, rings, ect. When I get home tonight I'll take pictures of each page. Just letting you guys know if you wanted to pic up the mag!

It looks like they put Steve Keirn's bowtie on Buddy Rose in the loose pics. That looks like a pretty decent article and photo gallery. They included the different camo patterns on Gagne's Raiders, but missed several other varients. Rick Martel, for instance. Some Martel figures from later in the production run actually have Jim Brunzell heads with black hair. Apparently they had to do something with the leftover Brunzell heads once he left for the WWF. There's also a Carlos Colon in red singlet, and Garvin, Gordy, and Long Riders with either muscular or fat bodies. Maybe that stuff is covered in the text, though.
I may have to pick up this magazine when I go to the bookstore this weekend.

Did not know about the Dick Woerhle eye color variant.
Does the article mention the Gordy variant that has either 2 or 3 stripes on the boots?
Would love to have a copy.

Any of the text you can't read does not say anything about more variants...Basically anything about a variant is on the pages with the readable text (sorry about the blurry pics) It seems you guys know a lot more about the variants than the person who wrote the article. The magazine is about $8 and can be bought at most bookstore/comic shops that carry magazines. It's called "Lee' Toy Review" If anyone REALLY wants a copy and has noway of getting one I can buy a few from my job and trade/sell them to you.

Too bad there is no mention of the Boris Z black outfit variant, with red sickle. I've only seen it once!

i would like a copy too. is there anything about the bockwinkle fig with his name on his jacket and different world title mold? I believe this is in the same category as the one STOMWIJF wrote about above, being a variant that never was. There was only ever one official AWA title belt for the figures(the one that was actually modeled after the NWA world belt, which always seemed odd). The figure you're writing about is wearing a belt from the "Wrestlers of the World" Remco-style figures (with modified strap). This is either a custom/fix-up from the era, or a mock-up of what an ambitious toy designer wanted to do with the Mat Maniacs re-release of Bock. Bockwinkle in question: members.tripod.com/~spams/awamuseum(sixteen or so links down. Tripod won't let me "hotlink" right to the image) And Wrestlers of the World w/belts (fifth pic down) wfigs.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=wfnj&action=display&thread=121225

There is actually a packaging variant that is not listed here. In fact I've never seen it surface anywhere else other than the ones I owned. They were AWA 2-packs on plain red carding. I was told they were originally packaged in a box with a videotape. I bought them on ebay around 1999 for about $30 each, turned around and resold them for around $100 each. If I would have known I'd never see them again I might have hung onto them for a while. I know I had Gagne's Raiders but can't for the life of me remember who the other two packs were. I'm searching for some photos I took of them way back then with a terrible digital camera, but I'm not sure I still have them.

I had these when I was a kid and I can verify that they came in a window boxed gift set with VHS tapes. The tapes had illustrations on the cover, as opposed to photos, and were very short compilations: either a half-hour or hour in length. The Gagne's Raiders figures had the black legs as opposed to wearing trunks like the regular release. I don't think Gagne's Raiders came packed together either, as I recall. I think it was something like Hennig and Jim Garvin and Gagne and someone else (Zbyszko maybe).

Hi,
I've owned at least 3 different AWA 2packs with videos. Unfortunately, I can't remember the figure combinations, but they were all relatively common.
Of course, these packages were not. Sold the set of three for well over $1000US.

Found the red-card pictures, if anyone's interested: Hayes & Martel: Regal & (I think) Gagne Roberts & (I think) Hennig

Looks like Hennig and Regal and Roberts and Gagne. I thought it was Hennig and Garvin, so I was close!
