It was a grim day. The sky a light blue and the sun was shining, yet no happiness filled the air. I walked through the graveyard slowly, nothing in front of me but miles and miles of death. Today would have been my mothers 47th birthday. Although she died 2 years ago, I haven’t seen her since I was 17. My mother Lisa never approved of me being in a band, she wanted me to be a doctor. So when she found out our band got a record deal, she kicked me out of the house. At that point in my life I didn’t care about her, I didn’t care about anyone except myself. I never knew how much she meant to until she was gone.
I kneeled down at her gravestone and sat down a single red Rose. Roses were her favorite flowers; she said it was because that was the first flower my father ever gave her. When I was little I could never figure out why my mother talked about my father David as if he were perfect. He left us the day after she gave birth to me. I told her over and over that he never loved either of us, but she just wouldn’t believe it. I think she lived in a fantasy world while I was growing up. She acted as if everything were perfect even when we didn’t have the money to pay bills or buy groceries.
I rose up from the ground and looked at my watch. “crapit’s 2:45 already” I mumbled to myself. I ran to my car and got in; I backed up and headed towards Derrick’s house. I told him I would be there at 3:00, but it across town and at this point I knew I would be late. \As I pulled up, I saw him standing outside the door waiting for me. He walked up to my car and opened the door.
Derrick: 15 minutes late huh?
Kira: Sorry, I was at the graveyard for awhile and I wasn’t watching the time.
Derrick: You know I’m just playin’ with you. I know it is Lisa’s birthday today.
I smiled at him for a second, and then looked away. He grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the car.
Derrick: Come on, let’s go inside. It’s getting mighty chilly out here.
I followed him up the steps and through the door. A rush of warm air surrounded me; it was almost like being home again. I unzipped my coat and dropped it on the couch, then sat down on the chair across from him.
Derrick: So what’s been going on with you? I haven’t talked to you in some time.
Kira: Well I already told you I’ve got into WFWF. Tomorrow I have a match against KD in the house show. I’m a little worried I won’t win, but I have gained a lot of confidence since I have got in. And right now that’s all that matters to me.
Derrick: That’s great Kira. But you need to try your hardest tomorrow. Don’t let em’ intimidate you…Alright?
Kira: Don’t worry I won’t, he doesn’t scare me. You should know I have always tried my best, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to win.
Derrick: I didn’t say you had to win. Don’t be putting words in my mouth now. I told you to give your best and no less.
Anyways, How is it going with ……uh what’s his name now, your therapist.
Kira: His name is Cole, Cole Jones. And I suppose everything is going good. I’m just not ready to talk about what he wants me to. I feel like I’m ready, but when I get there, it’s like…. I’m not the same person anymore. I go back to the person I used to be. I don’t understand why I’m not comfortable around him; it still feels like he is judging my every move.
Derrick: Well you felt that way when you met me, but haven’t you been going to him for awhile now?
Kira: Yes, it’s been about a year and a half now. But I’m trying to make it work; I don’t want to go to someone new. I don’t want to deal with someone who doesn’t know me or my problem.
Anyways I really need to be getting home Derrick; I have a lot to do before my match tomorrow.
Derrick: Ok, but you have to promise to come see me again soon. I miss spending time with you.
Kira: Ok, I promise Derrick. I will see you as soon as I can.
I rose up off the chair as Derrick handed my coat to me. I put it on and zipped it up. Although I don’t want to leave, I know I have to. I need time to get ready for my match, or there is no possibility I will win. He walked me outside to my car, and gave me a hug goodbye.
Derrick: Call me tomorrow after the match; I want to know how you did ok? And remember Kira, don’t punk out.
I laughed a little and looked up at him.
Kira: Hey, cutting me a little short aren’t ya? I’m not going to punk out Derrick. I’m ready to fight KD, he doesn’t bother me. All he does is talk a bunch of sh*t.
I opened the door to my car and got in. Derrick stood next to the door a minute, almost if he was thinking of something to say.
Derrick: Damn sure of yourself now huh?
Kira: Well of course Derrick. Anyways I’ll talk to you soon, Later.
He had a little smirk on his face as I pulled out of the driveway. I knew what he was thinking and he was right. I’m not so sure about the match tomorrow, but whatever happens….happens.
