decals + vinyl = Bad Custom I don't get it. What is wrong with using anything possible to make the custom as good is it can be. What's next, No Apoxie, No sand paper, No paint brushes? IMO It's just stupid to base a customs worth or quality on the supplies they use. Everybody here knows I use decals, not as much as I use to, but I create ALL my designs. I think we as customizers need to evolve think of better ways to make our customs as best as they can, not be limited to the norm... A pack of scupley & some paint. Anyway, if we could get off our "high horse" for sec and quit deeming what is a legit custom based on supplies and Just Get Better. Instead of complaining about them, try them. Hell, it might help your customs. Anyway this is not an argument, but a statement so no need to get excited. Check thefwooshnet, see what they are using in their custom, and how far a long they are in their customizing. Anybody who think decals & vinyl are a shortcut and can be done but anyone. I invite them to try. It might improve their customs. And as far the match goes The ALF great, really creative. I think you did a great job. Love the sign as well. Us older folk who grew up watching Ole Gordie knows what it is means. i totally agree, anything to make the custom more "official" looking is okay in my book. I however have to vote for the Alf. The sculpting is amazing and i love the painting on it. FamousJ does amazing work with painting and everything is clean and crisp. but i just give the edge to Rozz.

famousj I am a bit disappointed.
You talk about evolving as a customizer but shouldn't the first step to evolving be "paint designs from scratch?"
I was blown away when I first saw the Norman Smiley...but I am now kind of disappointed in it just for the decals.
Rozz, the Alf is amazing. My favorite show growing up as an 80's baby..The only thing is the arms bug me for some reason...like if they are too heavy on the bottom towards the hands..other than that it is fantabulous.

I have to go with the Alf because the detail is so much better. The Norman Smiley face is just sloppy though. Rozz gets my vote.

...You talk about evolving as a customizer but shouldn't the first step to evolving be "paint designs from scratch?" I was blown away when I first saw the Norman Smiley...but I am now kind of disappointed in it just for the decals. Well the thing is that not everyone has to go full out with both perfecting the art of and using fully painted designs. While it does represent a certain skill SET that's good for a customizer to have, that doesn't make it an indicator of some fairly subjective skill LEVEL if they don't have it. As was stated above, not every figure has to be 100% sculpey-ed out and engineered from scratch to be good for what it is... in fact at that stage you really aren't a "customizer" anymore, you're a fabricator of an original figure. If decals are accurate, and make the figure look better than a poorly painted effort, then they work just fine. Different people have jobs, school, lives, kids, etc. and may not be devoted to doing this full time. Even if they are, there's only so many figures you can make. There's plenty of room for simple repaints, touch-ups, small details etc. for people to make, and it's the community's job to encourage them properly, by giving constructive criticism that applies to what they actually did, not how far you think it should have gone. Making suggestions that include the next "level" of work is OK as long as it doesn't devolve into snobbery. I've seen some awesome full body sculpts on here, and I've seen some equally impressive fixes, and I look forward to seeing many many more. OK now that I've said all that... LOL. The ALF is a great piece, the hair is sculpted well and the paint job is spot on. The only nitpick I can find is that he had a slightly bigger and rounder midsection in all the pics I saw of him, yours is just a little leaner and cylinder shaped. The Smiley is very very nice, the pads are a great touch and the uniform looks good. The face and expression don't quite capture it for me personally, but the painting is smooth and clean. Overall I 'd have to give Norman the slight edge, but they're both fine work.
