I'll definitely be checking Beowulf out at some point, maybe not in theaters, although it would be a good one to see on the big screen. I'm a fan of Roger Avary, and Neil Gaiman surely knows his fiction, but I found the animation in Polar Express to be a bit creepy. In this however, it looks sharper, and it fits the story a bit better, it's not about humans we're supposed to relate to, and beyond that, there is no way to conceive of Grendel properly without using CGI, and then you just get the Hulk effect. So by putting every image into CGI, I think it brings a uniformity and ultimately opens up a new avenue of filmmaking. I find it interesting, and this makes me want to see the movie more than the fact that it's the story of Beowulf, which I was never a huge fan of since I read it in high school.

A couple of my friends are super pumped for Beowulf, I could honestly care less about it but I will go with them, and its in 3D so it should be entertaining.
If by some odd stroke of luck "No Country" or "Southland Tales" open around me this weekend Beowulf will have to wait.

I heard that Southland Tales got pulled from its original expansion plan, and it might not ever expand beyond like 5 theaters, which could be really bad news. No Country is still going super wide next Wednesday though, especialy since it made like a million dollars on 14 screens. This could be the Coen Brothers' Oscar year.

I love Donnie Darko, I don't care what anyone says about it, it's one of my 3 favorite movies ever made, along with Reservoir Dogs and Citizen Kane. Anyone can say anything they want about it, but nothing can change my mind. Even the critical reviews I can understand where they're coming from, but most of the negative points I don't level with, I think the movie is just great, and it comes down to a matter of taste and perception.
I'm getting kind of scared about Southland Tales though, everyone that loved Donnie Darko is saying Kelly shot his load of subtextual filmmaking with Darko, and that Southland Tales is an indecipherable mess. I'll be seeing it either way, but my hopes are waning. I just hope I can catch it in theaters, although it's not looking likely.

I'm not counting on catching Southland Tales in the theater, I highly doubt it will play around here.
Good news for me though, my favorite theater is getting No Country on Wednesday, along with I'm not There. So it looks like I will be pulling a double feature in a few days.
Tonight is Beowulf in 3D, which I should be leaving to catch in a hour or so.

Check the Last Movie post for my No Country and Southland Tales reviews in a little while. No Country is officially the best movie of the year so far.

That's a bad ass Hitman poster. I'm kind of going in two directions on that movie. I love Tim Olyphant, and I really want to see that movie based on him alone, but at the same time, I'm very weary of this movie based on the behind-the-scenes rumblings that have come about around changes being made on the movie, but due to Timothy Olyphant's comments in a recent interview, it reassures me a bit. Still, I'm not a huge fan of the game or anything, so I don't know what the main storyline is going to be about, but I'm curious about it. Not quite curious enough to spend $10 to go see it, especially with an alternate movie coming out that piques my interest even more.
As for The Mist, I'm really looking forward to this film, I really love the story, and Frank Darabont is one of the best working directors today, he has a real sense of what concepts shape a film, and The Mist has plenty of subtextual fodder to make a really strong film. Not to mention I like Tom Jane, he's a good leading man, and Andre Braugher is one of the best working actors alive. Period. Heap onto all that goodness it's a monster movie, and you just can't beat that in my book.
Also, No Country for Old Men opens wide, EVERYONE GO SEE THIS MOVIE!
