you're supposed to give up devil's temptations eg. cakes, sweets. I used to do it a bit and give the food I had in my house that wasn't needed to less fortunate but it's not as easy to do now I've moved. i could never give up Sara Lee and her delicious pies

It's not something uniquely Catholic, but it does seem to be most likely practiced by those who are Catholic or practice a religion closely related to Catholicism. It's not a practice that's done by a lot of Christians.

Fizzy drinks. And lent isn't restricted to catholics at all, I'm pentecostal and I do it every year. Last year I gave up anything to do with wrestling, I was very proud of myself.
*****EDIT******
If you aren't Christian why are you posting? Stop spamming up the thread with your ignorant (and some offensive) comments, it clearly says in the title 'If you're Christian...' so athiests that have just come in for a giggle and to poke fun at people for doing something out of commitment to something they've given their lives to should be ashamed of themselves. It takes alot more character to give something up for forty days than it does to ridicule someone else for doing it from the comfort of a desk chair where no one can hurt you.
