Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought they used some sort of "scan" technology to get these faces.... I was blown away by some of the Hall & Nash "scans" - they look spot-on. There are many others that are damn near perfect; Did Bret have some sort of objection to being scanned? Does anyone know how they do it? Do they actually put the talent in a device and scan their heads? Or do they take a promo photo and "scan" it into their software? I think this Monday Night Wars Ultimate one is okay, at least when he's wearing glasses... far from perfect.... I don't actually own this figure - - - but I always felt it was the BEST representation of Bret's head/face that we've seen. Not sure why they didn't use it more? Perhaps I'm in the minority on this? Respectfully, that Hall scan is trash. The older elite one, and other Razor Ramon sculpts are way better.

But if that Scott Hall with sunglasses looks better than every other Scott Hall with sunglasses and I prefer my Scott Hall figs with sunglasses then it is the best sculpt. Well to each his own, whatever makes you happy. Personally I think the Ultimate snarling head is the best Hall likeness. Whatever people's personal opinions on individual heads, likenesses, expressions, I think we can all agree it's nice to have a choice, unfortunately there are still many Legends that don't have multiple headscans released yet. And guys like DDP who only ever seem to get one expression (smiling). Well my fellow DDP brethren… we’re getting that straight faced DDP, Steven confirmed it when I asked in the Q & A. I’m just trying to figure out what attire they could give us. I want Mattel to give us a different mullet style, possibly longer hair like the toybiz figure. I’d like Halloween Havoc ‘98 Purple band diamond attire ultimate (baby blue band as variant) I’d like to see a snarling teeth gritting scan as an homage to the Toybiz version There’s just so many cool DDP looks we could get. I think the Jakks Csda scan was really nice, just too balloony though.

I thought the Bret original DM was pretty good as well as the elite where it was SummerSlam 92 w the chase as 91. The straight faces do a little better but I think in the eyes they mess it up and the expressive faces w the mouth open look weird on him

That Scott Hall head is worse than any Bret they’ve released. It looks like Michael Jackson. Conversely the Razor head from the Ultimate is perfect.

There’s one good Bret scan out there, which was on his first Ultimate. The face actually looks like him. But the hair is garbage.
They should take that head and rework the hair. Then remember that his hair isn’t black, it’s brown.

They let Goldberg design him, that's the issue.

I know that, back in the day, when they scanned heads, they literally SCANNED heads. You got put in a room with a device that spun around you and 3D mapped your head. Linda McMahon described the process once I believe, when she mentioned they were going to make a figure of her (that got cancelled).
Now, I don't think they do that anymore. And even if they did, they obviously can't scan heads of legends or flashback figures.
I've always suspected the reason that Wrestlemania Bret was so good was because it was a recent enough Bret that they may have been able to use some sort of scanning technology for. But heads for his flashbacks? Those they have to watch video and sculpt from scratch (I believe)
And that's where the question comes in.
If fan creators and 3D printers can make heads that blow the Mattel ones out of the water, how bad are the Mattel sculpters at their jobs? Are they not getting good enough reference material or are there other reasons they can't get it right? Because there are plenty of legends that they have knocked out of the park on the first or second try, so there has to be something going on that they can never get Bret right.
No clue what it is, but really. I can't imagine designers who can craft heads like the British Bulldog and RVD's RA head on the first or second try, can possibly not get a flashback Bret right after about 30 tries.

I’m convinced the person designing the heads at Mattel is Bill Goldberg. Although 1/6 scale and totally different methods used, this remains the best likeness of Bret Hart I ever seen:

While many have been shockingly bad, there are a few faces that have been decent enough. The area where Mattel always seems to falter is his hair. They simply can not accurately replicate the strands that flowed over his face without it looking extremely unnatural or like a clumpy mess of plastic dangling in front of his eyes. I have no idea why they have such trouble with it given how many shots they've had over the years.
Some of his more animated scans are passable with the shades on, but the key to a better resemblance comes down to giving him a more neutral expression and painting the eyebrows correctly. There are actually a select few Bret heads that can pass as "okay," but something about the eyes/brows always throws it off. Not saying it is perfect, however, the fact that his original Jakks Classic Superstars head from 20 years ago looks more like Bret than any Mattel attempt is inexcusable.

Clearly someone likes the two alternate heads with the Walmart figure, because the Suffren NY store had one there yesterday where the knee pads and glasses were stolen and the two alternate heads were swapped with his old UE heads.
