Just saw a Chelsea Green chase in the wild which got me thinking.
So they cant do an accurate HBK IYH tights (still can't looking at the re release still no gradient color) for whatever reason, but they can do a gradient chase figure for a female 1 off character.
🧐🤔🧐🤔
I have something to say here, but I want to keep it civil so I won't.
But what's the issue here? Why do Main Event wrestlers get shafted, but 1 off jokester jobbers get all the bells and whistles?

Absolutely no hate on Chelsea, because I think she’s great, but I agree. Seems like new proper molds, proper colors, and attention to detail really favors most one off characters (or characters who aren’t released as much) While characters like Macho & HBK(will we ever get his proper boots?)always suffered.

Oh absolutely, this isn't a bash Chelsea post, it's just weird to me how like you said less made people get better treatment than more popular people. Me calling her a jokester jobber isn't dissing her its exactly what her character is, like R-truth and I absolutely love truth 😂

From the looks of things Chelsea’s attire doesn’t have any additional designs, her accessories appear to be reuse, and the other figs in the series seem like they are very budget friendly vs HBK who was a limited store exclusive with several complicated X heart patterns requiring multiple deco hits plus entrance chaps and a vest that appears to be a new mold each with deco as well.

I’m also guessing that Mattel knows that Zack Ryder will be buying multiples of each and has a legion of blind followers who will also do the same.

HBK being an exclusive, should've been reason to give the attention to detail it needed over a 1 per case packed figure with less than 50% of the allotment as a chase no? Let's not forget the figure was 60% casted in black with cheap rubber goods over cloth goods. Same molds used in both scenarios have been used before, there was nothing new added to the RSE HBK other than the rubber gear. No other accessories came with HBK either. This was before inflation as well.

Oh please, chelseas gear isnt even accurate to what she wore in real life in the chase figure. HBK and macho man get figures all the time. Stop complaining. Theyre obviously testing it out.

Mattel has a weird time with metallics and gradients. I think Jakks had an easier time for whatever reason but Mattel figs are overall superior so it evens out.
I ordered the HBK DX, the gradient isn’t there and it probably could but it’s likely an oversight. For the record, that was the tannest HBK ever was so it should also have a tan skin tone. Still a cool fig tho

Honestly, everyone has pointed out the lack of gradient X’s for years so I doubt Mattel wasn’t aware. Does this one come with the kneepads? I remember them saying that they couldn’t give HBK kneepads at one point because the design was repetitive. We’ve also been asking for a new HBK boot mold too… With the amount of years that this figure had out, it should of been improved upon greatly and released as an ultimate. I would of bought this figure had it been done correctly.

Yeah, that RSE HBK didn't feel so Exlcusive. And the lack of detail on the tights made it look so plain. Instead of a rerelease they should've gone back to the drawing board and improved it.

On the note of DX IYH HBK, I know they try to keep the Monday Night War line focused on the actual tv shows and not the PPVs, but Shawn DID wear the DX IYH entrance attire on Raw once (the Christmas episode) that year. He had different tights on, but I don't think anyone would mind if they just snuck him in as an Ultimate wearing the tights from the PPV.
Regarding the topic, I think it's a mix of playing favorites and also wanting to go the extra mile for a talent that might not get too many other figures. Make it extra special so it sells better (in theory) so they can make more. They also sometimes just stick to the blueprint for a character era they produce more of, like how all the Triple H figures in long tights keep using the bare legs mold instead of smoother tights; it's just the formula for that era of the character. An oversight like that slips through the cracks when you have to design X amount of figures every week. I'm sure there are reasons, but hopefully they eventually stop doing that and stop giving Kurt Angle horse steroids.

Mattel has struggled with metallic paint apps, color matching, and location specific gradient for years.
Not saying it's excusable, but I could see them doing the color treatment on Chelsea because if the app is off a smidge, nobody will notice. Same with gradient they've done on some of the women's hair. But I'm not sure they can do small, spot specific gradient as effectively for a fig like HBK.
I wonder if it's a factory issue. Hasbro seems to have no trouble doing more involved treatments without issue or major budget limitations pretty regularly.

Best mattel can do is a shade of red that was never actually the shade of red on the real attire. Sorry bud. Green? Are you crazy? That is premium quality colors.

Which is so odd because I remember BCAs with metallic paint that was perfect. Some of those Goldust figs. It’s so weird we can’t do that now

The real answer here is that Cardona is buddies with the MDT and Bill was always going to bend over backwards for Chelsea if the opportunity presented itself. I'm a fan of what she's doing now, but she really shouldn't have gotten a Basic the first time around, with a chase no less, because she was always hurt and never on TV.
I also think it's fair to point out that they probably cut cost on the HBK paint apps in order to give us the entrance attire. Which is what it is. I'd take the figure with no entrance gear if it meant getting his tights (and hair/head) right. I still think the figure should get an Ultimate upgrade, even despite Ringside rereleasing their version.
