Definitely in some instances it’s the talent. We know Scott Steiner has been vocal in the past he was offered and refused. Pretty sure Corny also has refused a deal. Also think it was reported that Laurinaitis family issues was what was preventing the Road Warriors from being signed. I'm hoping Cornette will work a deal because in the last couple weeks he said he has another figure in the works, but isn't planning anymore. Says he's getting too old for the lead time and doesn't want his wife stuck with the figures if something happens to him.

Wow mind blown. Had no idea it was this complicated. Always thought it was just between mattel and the wrestlers or their family. There shouldnt be so many restrictions for wrestlers when it comes to the toys but im guessing the exclusive end of it is probably forced on by mattel. Looks like our dreamlines are all out the window then. Really puts a damper on collecting knowing that we will never get everything we'd like which is why all of us are starting to look at other companies to conplete our lineups. In that regard mattel is stabbing itself in the back and other companies will be doing the same if they put these restrictions on their signees. In a perfect world all these companies can sign anyone they want and in the end the lowest cost with the best sculpts can win out. Ok well im definitely going to start looking at other companies now as its apparant that once a wrestler sees what the wwe (mattel) offers that they never reconsider. So for me as a big king kong bundy fan i doubt ill see him as a mattel figure in my lifetime. Well thanks for all that info. Good to know. Still curious to learn about how these contracts are formed and especially how many years they are signed for. I think you're putting too much responsibility on Mattel. This is all WWE's machine.... WWE offers retired (or semi-retired) talents either Legends or Nostalgia contracts.... which likely include a few paid appearances (autograph signings at ticket-On Sale dates, Wrestlemania Fan AXXESS, ambassador-type stuff, and I know they get invited to the Hall of Fame), then the WWE merch machine goes to work on them. Video Games, T-Shirts, Action Figures, etc. Of course a Legend like Bret Hart would be structured a little differently (bigger scope, more "stuff") than someone like a Headshrinker Samu, or a Paul Bearer.... Mattel has a license with WWE with exclusive action figure rights to all WWE-contracted talent. It's up to WWE to sign these guys in order for Mattel to be able to make figures. I don't think Mattel could (or should) pursue a talent, then make a figure of them AND slap the WWE brand on it. It's up to WWE to sign people and add them to Mattel's available roster. Could Mattel reps ask WWE to sign some new Legends, to spice up the action figure line? I'm sure they could.... and I'll bet they do! Just as I'm sure Mattel reps are disappointed when big names like Macho Man, Ric Flair, & Sting are no longer under contract....

I believe Jim cornette commented once on it or it may have been hall of fame - my memory is fuzzy but I think that he said legends contracts (this might have changed since now they’re called something different) had built into them an element of public appearances (maybe things like access etc), potential tv appearances such as one offs etc and he didn’t want to sign up to that. Maybe people who are older, settled etc don’t want that hassle and are happy to sit by and get lower numbers with the indie companies etc I think Cornette also wants to maintain an aura of impartiality when he reviews the weekly Wrestling programs on his podcast..... and becoming a Contracted WWE Legend might put a bit of a bias in place. If WWE is paying him, how can he remain objective in his reviews? He's usually pretty critical of AEW.... Yeah there are appearances built-in. The Godfather once told me that he was invited to the Hall of Fame (as a guest, NOT his own induction).... he didn't really want to go, but he felt obligated since he was being paid on his Legends contract. So he went....

Flair Forever Do you know if AEW could make some WCW crow Stings? Like hypothetically, if they packaged a modern Sting in a singlet (which he did wear in AEW) and then packaged a longer haired sculpt (without the goatee) on the side. Some of Sting’s looks can pass off for some casual fans. I’m actually just curious why we’ve never gotten a singlet Sting from AEW in general. Again, take this with a grain of salt.... but I'd heard that Sting had to alter his actual AEW ring attire slightly so as NOT to infringe on the WWE copyrights (which he HAS changed a little).... as we've seen, Sting doesn't even WEAR the singlet anymore. Honestly I'm slightly skeptical about that piece, but my "buddy" said that's due to WWE as well. Damn that would suck if that’s the case. I know he wore a singlet a couple of times during his initial AEW run. I don’t know why Jeremy put up that stupid poll then asking what retro Stings we wanted if there were copyright infringements. Part of me selfishly wants Sting to sign a WWE legends to get a better representation of the character, but honestly I’d rather he be happy as an individual. If that means not signing a deal and us not getting figures, that’s okay with me. Sting is the man and he was the LAST to sellout to WWE.

I actually think the "Lack of New Legends" narrative is a little overblown. I think it feels that way cause we got so many re-releases but just look back at 2023. We Got:
Rick Steiner Scott Steiner Shelton Benjamin Eric Bischoff Torrie Wilson Samu Brother Love Paul E Dangerously (IF you want to count him) Zeus Muhammad Ali Gobbledy Gooker
That's really not all that bad of a year at all in terms of first time in the line legends.
And we have some new characters lined up for 2024 like Terry Gordy, Lou Albano, Peter Maivia, John Cone, Nicholas. The Sultan is technically a new character at least
Given how little names are left to choose from, I don't think they have done a bad job at all making whoever they have the capability of making. So it sure isn't on Mattel's end, I would guess it is on the talent's end or some legal crap.

If you watch his WWE DVD, they have him sit & view some of his classic matches & he remarks that this is the first time he's sat and watched them, EVER. Wrestling is his JOB. It's all BUSINESS to Sting. The times I've met Sting he was very quiet; not very conversational. And I worked an autograph signing where - when the advertised 3 hours was up - he picked up and left. There were still people waiting in line, some kids cried. It was sad. Not knocking Sting, I'm a huge fan. I have almost every Sting figure they've made. I suspect Sting will go along with whatever company is willing to pay him what he feels he is worth. If WWE offers him a lucrative deal, he'd probably sign. Right now - AEW is offering him a deal that suits him just fine.

Right now - AEW is offering him a deal that suits him just fine. lol! That happened to my brother-in-law in the mid-90’s. We were at a card show at a hotel in the meadowlands in NJ and he went to get some autographs from the NY Yankees and the old Negro League players that they were celebrating. And when we got to Buck Leonard’s table he started to sign his name and stopped signing and left at Bu…his time was up so he was done. The promoter did get him to finish my brother-in-laws item, but there were still at least 30 people in line that the promoter was begging him to finish. lol That show was memorable to me for so many reasons. First when my brother-in-law went to get Bucky Dent to sign a mini helmet the gold paint pen exploded on Bucky and he had this look of disgust as it was all over his hands and sweater. I did feel bad for him. And then from about 20 feet away I saw my father-in-law get knock over by Reggie Jackson who just plowed through the crowd and pushed him over from behind without saying he was sorry or acknowledging he did it so when Reggie got to were I was I laid a shoulder block into him which knocked him into his entourage. And as I was walking away I heard him say “what you don’t say excuse me”. lol As for Sting when I met him we had about a five minute conversation. It wasn’t high energy like his character on TV, but rather soft spoken and engaging.

Well, if that is the case, I really hope that WWE does offer him a good money contract and he can come back, just do a few appearances, and we can get more merch (figures) from Sting with his classic looks. Maybe then Flair would follow too, as I thought I read he was under a short term deal with AEW and really only appears fairly sporadically anyway.

These events are getting paid to have him sit there and maybe after a while it gets repetitive and annoying. I remember hearing about how conventions work. Jason David Frank’s team spoke about the inner workings and they seem a bit stressful. Not defending Sting on not speaking or interacting. I think I recall Sting saying he was into basketball and body building prior to wrestling too.

From the wrestlers that I've spoken with (and I've spoken with quite a few)..... and I'm trying to word this diplomatically...... The WWE Legends Contract isn't all that lucrative.... and in fact, sometimes it actually LIMITS them from accepting other deals/bookings where they could make money. A few have told me that the wrestler actually sees very little of the action figure money. For example, the Legends contract wouldn't just cover action figures, but probably all merch such as T-shirts. Once a talent is signed with WWE they aren't typically allowed to sell T-shirts on PWtees, where they might stand to make more money than the small percentage WWE would pay them. I'll never forget chit-chatting with Jeff Jarrett at a convention, we were standing next to each other looking at a merch table covered with figures.... he pointed to the Brian Pillman Elite & said "that's nice, when did they make that?" I told him it was a couple years old..... then I asked him if we'd be seeing a Jeff Jarrett Mattel figure (this was recently after his Hall of Fame induction)..... he actually put his arm around me (it was slightly weird but cool) and said "Not..... part...... of the deal." Reading between the lines..... it wasn't worth it for him to sign that agreement with WWE. During the period where Karrion Kross was fired from WWE, he told me that Scarlett was making far more money on her "Fans" website than anything WWE was paying them so financially they had zero worries. I also worked on an Independent wrestling show that advertised D-Von Dudley, but D-Von had to pull out because WWE wouldn't allow him to appear. D-Von had been working for WWE as a producer at the time, he has since left WWE. Look at Sting/AEW figures.... I'm now hearing from someone who has a hand in AEW merch that they can't do Surfer Sting figures because of some sort of lock that WWE has in that IP. So Sting lost out by signing his WWE deal. Take it with a grain of salt, but that's what I heard from my inside "buddy." I have seen some wrestlers recently getting "Nostalgia" contracts, I suspect those are smaller scale but also likely less-limiting as far as exclusivity. Perhaps we'll see some headway with the Nostalgia contracts... There were also all those wrestlers involved in a lawsuit against WWE (I think Demolition was part of that). It makes sense that WWE wouldn't try to market/promote/pay individuals who are actively suing the company. So.... various reasons. It's between WWE and the entertainers. Now that WWE is under new ownership, it's entirely possible that these contract structures will change - or maybe it won't. Adding onto this a little bit...a lot of these contracts are public domain through various lawsuits. Every single one I've seen has been cookie cutter. Talent are paid a 10k advance on royalties, and there is a set percentage for each category (toys, shirts, dvds, etc) paid out of WWE's cut. So in the case of figures, it was 25% of WWE's share of the revenue. On a $20 figure I think that comes out at around $.50. There is also a per appearance fee for things like Axxess - I think it was a few hundred bucks + travel. And for that, they had to sign away international licensing rights for years (usually 5 + a 1 year WWE option to extend). For guys who are active on the indy circut selling their own merch or have PWT stores, the finances didn't make sense. I suspect a lot of lower name wrestlers never even made anything back beyond the $10k. That info is a few years old, so things could have changed. We've seen news about nostalgia contracts. I don't know if those are deals that may have different terms or they just rebranded what they call them. And top-top stars almost certainly have deals with a more lucrative revenue split. But WWE are only interested in having so many wrestlers under a deal - they basically sell that slate of names as content to licensees. And there are some wrestlers who have been vocal about not wanting to sign, either due to the poor terms or a beef with WWE. Things change and WWE has a lot of changes in both ownership and management structure. Maybe the overall approach changes, but that could be good or bad. But I'd expect there to be a good number of new names in the line revealed between WM and SDCC this year.

I know plenty of musicians who don't listen to their own recordings or actors who don't care to watch their film beyond the premier. I don't know that it has anything to do with time or money, per se. But if you were there, doing it, in the moment, you have a much different relationship with it than a fan who wants to watch back their favorite matches.

I understand that perspective as well, mainly because a lot of artists are their own critics, or just feel weird about watching themselves. Johnny Deep stated that he doesn’t watch his films. Sometimes, it’s other factors like making something you enjoy into a full time job or triggering memories of the past. I’m an artist myself, sometimes I feel strange watching myself in front of others. Sometimes it’s annoying when you repeat a craft over and over that it loses it’s shine over time.

Not that Sting is a jerk or that he doesn't care about wrestling or his fans. He's GETTING paid by AEW, and AEW is making Sting figures. I just don't think Sting cares about what figures they're making..... it's irrelevant to him. Business, he's collecting his paycheck and it's all the same to him either way.

I wonder with tko owning wwe and Vince basically completely gone from everything now if this opens up the door for Owen hart ? Hall of Fame induction figures and other merchandise remember Martha said she didn't want Vince to profit off anything to do with him so it very well might be different now he's gone
